I think an 8 speed is probably the best compromise between having enough gears for economy, and not being a pain by hunting for for the right gear.
Agree.

Honestly I didn't get the focal point of your photo, so I'll upload mine

I recall driving the 10 speed ranger, and thought it wasn't really using all 10 gears, perhaps if you were towing and needed the best gear to climb a hill it would come into play.

I don't see how 8 gears could ever be considered a "compromise" (in a car at least)
I've driven trucks with (a lot) more, but that's because the "power to weight ratio" was practically zero, and some of the engines have only 500rpm of usable range.

Well this is a car based forum, so obviously my comment was directed towards cars.

In performance driving conditions, a 10 speed can feel very odd with the ultra short gearing. And obviously a 4 or 5 speed automatic is a drain on performance and economy. That is where the 7 or 8 speed auto is a compromise, not too short in the gearing and also not constantly hunting for a gear, but also not straining the engine.

In sedate driving in D, the 10 speed skips gears. For example, it will start in 1st, skip to 3rd, skip to 5th ect.

For towing, heavy accelerating and when S is selected, the gearbox then shifts sequentially through the gears.

With so many gears, it can be hard to know what gear is actually in. One trick I have found with the 10 speed Ranger, click the + or - selector while in D and a gear map will be displayed on the cluster screen. Handy for knowing what gear the transmission is in and a interesting thing to observe.

Ha ha, I'm a visual person and like to add images to flesh out my posts, I though that one was appropriate. And, I also love how when in manual mode, the current gear is shown in a somewhat retro graphic.

Needs more BTR 1st gear with 3.08 diff ratio, 1 gear does everything from car park to freeway legal speed limit

Given the space constraints of a light vehicle transmission - makes me wonder how strong the components are inside the gearbox - they can't be of significant size, right?

The 10R80 is the new kit on the block; it's Ford's implementation of the joint Ford-GM collaboration on a new high-tech trans. (GM's version is the 10L80 and 10L90.) Few, if any, performance hard parts are available yet for either manufacturer's version, but so far it seems to be a pretty stout piece under most hot rod scenarios. Dolejsi reports the only broken 10R80s he's seen are out of heavy four-wheel-drive trucks that (paradoxically) were lowered on drag radials, turbocharged, and subject to a full spool-up "hot launch" at the drags. "But only under that extreme boost-building condition—and only in trucks. Starting at the 600-hp level with power-adders in a car, the 10R80 only needs better clutches so far, which are available. Clutch failure starts with the F clutch pack; the E-clutch is next." If the trans is in good shape with low mileage, going through it for performance at the 1,000-hp level costs around $2,500 parts and labor.

So you have the XE, which got me looking as I knew jags came with the Lion v6.

Looks like the XF-250 did. and the last of them in 2012 had an 8 speed.

In theory this Trans should mate up to the territory diesel.

to those in the know would the transmission module plug in.. and work?

last problem of course is how many wreck 2012 XF 250s are in australia..
