Ours worked the other way round, went and bought a new lawn mower, missus paid with the credit card, $8-900 I can't remember exactly.
Store was busy as and the young guy was a bit flustered so we just paid and left them to it. Got home and sat down to watch a movie and enjoy the aircon and there's a knock on the door. The two guys from the lawn mower shop standing there looking very uncomfortable. Turns out he had put the price through as $8.99 in stead of $899 and none of us noticed lol They brought a couple of service kits as an apology and of course the eftpos machine. Lucky for them the missus had put down our address on the warranty paperwork. When she went and looked at her phone she had like 30 missed calls. |

When this happens to me and the store staff are *** holes about it all and lie and try making me out to be a thief etc until oroven wrong i say fcck it and really screw them over.
Mobile phones are great. Tell ya mates to quickly head to the store and buy 2 of ......... then argue the price. Get 1 free and save on the 2nd. But then go back and return the 2nd for a refund. They quickly learn whats happening and correct the price after the 3rd or 4th time it happens. |

When I lived up in Karratha, just over twenty years ago I went into Kmart with two mates looking at fishing rods and in those days there were no scanners and they had just price stickers on the items and we picked out an Ugly Stiks each, all the same, anyway the two mates were marked at about $130 and when I looked at mine it was marked $100 less, and when we went through the register all together I was only charged the price on the sticker on mine and they were charged the correct price. Outside the shop we bumped into another mate and he said take it back you'll get it for nothing as they have charged you the wrong price, but I never I was happy with the price I payed for it, caught plenty of good Red Emperor and Coral trout on it.

Was in large fashion store during the holidays and notice GStar shoes for sale at $65 discounted from $180. Shoe on the shelf was my size but they could not find the other shoe out the back. Salesman says the have same shoe slightly darker colour available. I point out that the sale for that shoe was no where near as good. Told the sale should be the same price.
Get to the counter with the same salesman and it scans up for $120. Discuss the sales price on the original shoes that I wanted but then was told the sales price of the original shoe must be wrong. He the offered the shoes for $80. Told him I was only interested at the $65, that is what attracted to the shoes and if not for sale at that price then he can keep them. Ended up paying $65 and walked out with the shoes. Shoes look and feel good!! |

Only bought 1 pack of toilet paper, but it had been charged twice on the docket. As it was a large pack, it was clearly obvious I didn't have 2 in the trolley. The manager had to come over to fix it up, and she explained that sometimes the barcodes get picked up twice if they have multiples printed on the pack, and the delay time between reads in the system isn't long enough for them to clear the item away from the reader before the other barcode gets read. All in the name of speed at the checkout. We've also had it happen in the past but not realised until we were at home scanning the docket & saw 4 of an item that we'd only bought 3 etc - doesn't take much for someone not paying full attention to accidentally bump it through again if the "beep" wasn't quick enough the first time. |

I always pay attention as stuff is scanned, it's amazing how often the check out zombies double scan items. I especially pay attention to items on discount on the shelf as they don't always scan at the discount price at the checkout. Woolies especially, because you get it for free if it scans wrong. If I see the item is discounted in the junk mail and at the regular price on the shelf, I'll grab 2 because when it scans wrong you get the first one free and the second at a discount. Sometimes it takes a bit of spirited discussion with the checkout zombie to make it happen but once the supervisor or manager gets involved they have to honor the policy.

Here we go again, went in to my local Sprint Auto on Thursday for 3 cans of their own brand degreaser which is on special for $2.25 per can presently.
Went to the checkout 'that will be $8.85 thanks...' 'But aren't they only $2.25 a can right now?' 'Oh. they're on special are they.' 'Umm, they are right there on the counter with a big label saying $2.25 so I find it hard to believe you could miss it.' 'Computer's still showing $2.95...' There's a trend emerging here |

When I'm in Big W/Target/Kmart where there is a price check scanner I will always scan the items I buy prior to going through the checkout. The simple reason for this is that there have been plenty of times before where the item scans up as less than the stickered price so if I was prepared to pay the stickered price for the item and it scans as half I'll go get another one. As for dockets in Coles and Woolies, I should start looking at them more often cause I'm sure thats how they claw back the shortfall from household retail.

Xmas is here so I thought it a good time to revisit this thread...
Went to Supercheap earlier in the week as they have trailer coupling locks on special for $26.99 in their catalogue, so I'm looking at them on the shelf and the price tag says $40 odd dollars so I'm thinking perhaps it was in another retail outlet as i'd received multiple catalogues chasing the xmas buck as you do. So after walking out I ring my lad and ask him to go through the catalogues to see exactly where they are, Supercheap he says. I needed to call into another shopping precinct that also has a Supercheap so I decided to wait until I got there and make my purchase. Sure enough they have a tag on them highlighting the special of $26.99. So I head for the checkout with it and a packet of cable tie sticky pad things which were worth $3.99, they are scanned and the attendant says that'll be $32.98. I'm like, I beg yours, how much are the sticky pads, $3.99 she says. How much is the trailer lock, $28.99 she says. I say no way, they're on special for $26.99. I don't think so she says, they're scanning at $28.99. So I say hang on, i'll go check and off I go only to return with my mind at ease discovering I'm correct at $26.99, I tell her they're in the catalogue of which they had a pile right there on the counter. She doesn't agree and rather than check the catalogue right next to her calls over the PA for a price check. I fair dinkum nearly told her to shove it up her **** and would have if not for this thread, I thought, nope, I'm riding this one out, its xmas again and a pattern is emerging here. So after a few seconds the phone rings and its the person at the back of the store informing her that the ticket price is $26.99, you sure she says, requests the part number and then in a clearly frustrated voice says well its scanning at $28.99. I'm standing there with the biggest, and I mean it is hurting so much that I think the corners of my mouth will tear at any second, cheesy grin on my face. So she hangs up and without even the slightest hint of an apology calls the Manager to override the register so she can put it through at the correct price. He comes down and asks what the problem is, she explains, he says are you sure and picks up the catalogue, checks it, makes a grumbling noise and proceeds to punch in his authorisation code. That'll be $30.98 thanks... Be on thee ball kiddies! |

Not quite the same situation as you BENT,
SCA recently had a product on sale for around a 40% discount. So I went in, found it on the shelf (didn’t actually look at the price) and went to the counter. It came up at full price, so I challenged it stating “it’s on sale”. Turns out the sale didn’t start till the following day. I said “I’ll come back tomorrow then” while the person behind the counter just smirked. I remember a time when they’d actually tell you things were about to go on sale, so hold out if you can. I understand the onus is on me, it was just disappointing.

Another one from SCA, saw an advert on the tele at about 9pm for a sale item, turned up the next morning and it was scanned at full price, when I questioned it the attendant just smirked and said the sale ended yesterday... haven't been back since.
One to watch in the supermarkets is weighed items, if they don't take they're hand off the item it weighs more and costs you more, I pick this up on a regular basis so I weigh my produce in shop first to get a rough idea then pick them up if there a discrepancy and get it for free.

This happens at Coles without specials.
Bought some oranges at about $3 and was charged for cherries at $15 Also watch out for the scam some checkouts use (not Coles) in smaller outlets where they ask if you want cash out, and you decline, but get to check the docket and fine $20 cash out. Every time I shop I check the docket within 4 feet (120 centimetres for the young ones) of the checkout before leaving because only too often I get charged for more expensive items i.e apples at $5/kg instead of $3.5/kg. As for speaking nicely to retail workers, when I get fuel and they ask which pump number, I always ask which is the cheapest, usually gives them a laugh. |

There was a story in the media recently about some % of retail staff being abused.
I reckon a lot of it is brought on themselves. I needed to buy a particular item as a Christmas present. Knowing one of the common electronics chain stores is up the road from work, I checked their website, found it was in stock (but having been caught before, I decided to call - "Yes, we have 11 in stock. So I printed out the product page and took it in with me. The "greeter" looked at the page & said, "I don't think we sell them, but check in the phone section anyway" and moved onto the next person before I could even say "you have 11 in stock!" Started looking up & down, couldn't find them. Waited 5 minutes for another staff member to finish helping someone with a bluetooth speaker (that was 20 seconds, the rest was him chatting about finishing school for the year), and asked where these items were - showing him the page. He pointed in the distance & said "down there". My reply was "can you show me, I've looked there?" He huffed and stomped about 3 steps, and said "there, opposite the TV" (there were dozens of TVs in the shop). So off I go, and after 5 minutes I finally find a little narrow rack, but there's none of the one I want, only a very basic version, and there was only a couple of them too. So I looked around for someone else. Finally got a guy. His reply "I'm going on my break, find someone else" - so I spat back "I've used up 15 minutes of my break waiting for useless help in this store, surely you can give me 10 seconds to ask a question?" Once again, a big huff... I asked if they had more somewhere, as the website showed them in stock, and when I rang 20 minutes ago, they said they had 11. He walked off without replying. So onto staff member # 4 - an older guy than the 3 schoolies/toolies I'd already tried unsuccessfully. His first response "we don't sell them" So I showed him the page & pointed out the web address. "Oh, they must be new, try the phone section" - I had to stop him & explain the 11 in stock, and walk him to the rack to show him. Finally someone understands it!! So he says he'll go & get somebody who can check for me, as he's not real sure, as it's only his first week here, and the system is different to the last store he worked in. Waited almost 10 minutes, and he's still not back. So I started moving further from the rack to see if I could spot him. Found him, in the phone section, being Mr Smooth to a teeny bopper looking at phones. I stood nearby until he could finally look away from her, and I said "did you find someone?" - his reply "really sorry bro, I forgot" and went straight back to chatting up little blondie...... So I stormed out, only to have the "greeter" ask me if I had a good experience. If anyone remembers the band Scatterbrain, then I almost had a "don't call me dude" moment, but held it together, stating firmly, and factually, that the place employed dickheads. Is it any wonder retail staff get abused? I'm extremely patient with people, and I'm always polite to them. I even did their legwork, checking stock & printing out the web page for the product from their own site. In the end I ordered online from a different place, who have a 'click and collect' arrangement, and got it all sorted much more easily. And these morons want us to support bricks & mortar stores.... yeah right, not with those idiots working there. Absolutely no customer service skills. But back to the dockets, I had a small win at Bunnings the other night. I had a handful of items, and I'd added up in my head what they would total. When she had scanned everything, it was $82 instead of $89. Knowing one item was close to $7, I asked if she'd scanned everything. She did a quick recap, and confirmed all 5 items were processed - but then found the expensive item had scanned at $7 less than the shelf price. Maybe the sale tag blew off (or someone removed it?) Who knows. But that was a pleasant surprise. |

In your case of the item showing in stock on the website - I'd always call up first and have someone confirm that the stock is there. At this time of year the amount of theft is unbelievable and what may have been showing in stock on the system is no longer in the store (I doubt that would have accounted for 11 missing though). On another note: I always remind customers to check their dockets before they leave and if a mistake is made it will be sorted out right away. Remember at this time of the year that staff are under the pump. In a busy shift, some staff may serve over 100 customers and process 7-10,000 items. Mistakes are going to happen, whether they are operator error or system error. Be polite, patient and reasonable and the issue will get sorted.

There is an industry code of practice regarding shelf price and what it comes up on scanning at the till. In a nut shell, if it scans different from the shelf price, the item is on the house. It was put in place when the barcode scanning was first being rolled out in supermarkets as a means of ensuring consumer confidence.

I can tell you that my employer does not participate in a code of practice outlined by an external body. Instead it has its own policy that is effectively the same thing.

Can you send a current link to the code of practice? I couldn't find it earlier on. I work for one of the "big boys" and know that we have our own policy and are no longer signatories to an external body in that regard. Happy to be proven wrong though.
The policy has always regarded an item scanning higher than the shelf price. If it scans lower, the customer is not out of pocket and therefore does not get a free item. All staff are aware of the policy where I work. In fact, the policy is in their face when they clock on for each shift. Most are too busy on their phones to even notice things like that though ha!

Woolworths is the only one that a signatory to the Code administered by the ACA. Others have their own version that is similar. IGA has links to their code as well which is very similar too. But it's not a set in stone scanning law that all have to adhere to by the looks of things. More of a "goodwill gesture".

SuperCheap Boxing Day sale today.
Min 25% storewide and more on certain lines. So off I go with my stack of gift cards. I find SuperCheap to be the worst for incorrect prices at the till and today was no different. I now add things up on my phone before I get to till to be safe.
