Facebook is a great tool and can be used for many things, glad to see AFF finally make it over there.

I have heard that there has been some bannings on FB already though? Is this true?

I'm hardly of the social networking generation either but there have been a number of unofficial pages circulating for a while now and not all of those were created with good intentions - indeed some of them reflected quite badly on this forum.

Having a page is merely another way for those who use that form of media to interact with AFF as well as being a counter to some of the unofficial ones - the worst of which we will have removed.

Regards
Russ

Good to see you guys are on Facebook.
Its funny to see people still have their head in the sand about social media.
Its here to stay and its how i earn a living and I'm not going anywhere any time soon.

Hardly, playing with my friends and meeting new guys, quite a few from here builds upon and expands said network. I just don't see the need to have my entire life paraded online for all to see. And I don't miss out on anything given all my friends are on FB and I'm just an SMS away.

Fb is unfortunately a part of the future and it's good for the forum to see it being embraced.

If it’s what I think it is, it’s a device that the cops would use in the “interview” process. Many here who may be a lot older than your good self may have been introduced to the phone book if the answers they were giving weren’t the answers the “interviewers” wanted to hear.

Over time, names change, so the phone book has evolved to facebook, bookface or whatever.

This bloke could probably explain it better than me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWx4U7ZKk54

This is why I’m too scared to open a bookface account.

It's getting harder as employees visiting social networking sites during work times is frowned upon by employers,
they give you computers and lock out all the social networking sites, even AFF and others are banned.
Sounds reasonable until you travel away and need a second laptop to converse on sites...

And which has had more serious security issues in the past 12 months?
A lot of info was taken when PSN was hacked.

Facebook is just a lo-fi 00's version of the internet forum.
Someone starts a thread here - 'I crashed my car'; people comment and ask for pics.... Facebook, same thing, just a slightly different format.

You don't have to 'parade' your life online, you see, you are in control of what people see and what you post. Sure, there is a lot of junk on Facepalm; but that could be said of TV, radio and the internet as a whole.

not a fan of face book, while you might be in charge of your own posts, you certainly are not in charge of what your face book friends that you just talked to posted, next thing you know a conversation/pic you had will be posted by one of your friends......how good is that security again?

Seriously a bit over the top. My objection isn't based on security concerns it's on the way it takes over people's lives. The way that having a fb account is almost a priority. If I was overly concerned about security i wouldn't have a build thread here. Nor list my location.

No tin foil hat here.

For those concerned about their privacy as I am, there is always the option to register a nom de plume on Facebook. I have four Facebook accounts for four different areas of interest.
My real name is locked down for family viewing only.

Facebook is a great tool if used correctly. I have been on it a while now and I use it to connect with my family and friends from overseas, to promote my small family business and also to monitor what my kids get up too on facebook.
If used incorrectly it can become dangerous and it is this reason why i would suggest to those who have young children, to learn how these systems work. Children these days are taught in kinder and prep how to operate a computer and by grade 5 or 6 most have a facebook account. The problem i find is that most of these little rat bags think that their parents are oldies and do not know how to use computers let alone Facebook or twitter so they start doing things with out you knowing. I find that knowing how Facebook works puts me one step ahead of my kids.

1. If your friends do that, they aren't your friends
2. Don't tell your friends things that you do not want repeated if you do not trust them.
3. Telling them in writing or verbally, over the phone or via PM ..... then repeated .... its called gossip and has been around before the internet. No need to blame anyone else
4. Be in charge of what your face book friends say by limiting what you say to them and who your friends are ..... ?

Bookface doesn't get you in strife ..... you do.

if security is such a concern, do what i do
use a false name, blank out your plates, don't put pics showing the street view of your house and don't show your birthday
or
you can be a normal person and just follow auslandau's advice

as others have suggested, facebook can be invaluable for keeping in touch with
family and friends - particularly if interstate and they own coupes

Some fairly strong responses about facebook on here.

It did take me a bit to get use to it, and yes people can see and copy and "steal" photos etc if your security is not set right.

I can post what I like on there and if people get offended or don't like it, they soon move on.

At the end of the day, to me, I see it as a great move for AFF and has allowed more members on here to add each other as friends and get to know each other a little better.

And can I just add, has anyone read the tips and updates on the AFF page? Great work!!

Stealing photos is going to happen anyway regardless of what settings you have. Anyone who knows what print screen is would know what I'm talking about.
Just a tip for those who are new to Facebook..on the top of your Facebook profile page there is a link which you can click on which shows you how a stranger will be able to view your own page. This is a good tool to see how your settings are set... or create a fake account and use that facebook account to view your real account. And always make sure to upload 72 dpi files only on the interent doesn't matter if you're posting on Facebook or on any other forum. If you have any questions please don't hesistate to contact me.
Cheers.

Whilst we are on the topic of security...I have changed my settings on facebook so it is a secure setting.

The address bar indicates https instead of just http.

Yes that's a great idea, Facebook offers this option now so i would reccomend everyone to switch over to https mode. I have that on my website as well for added security. Good tip GL

FACEBOOK ....

Lets see .....

is good and bad but how can you choose your friends when someone who you have met once through associates adds you?

1. do you accept
2. if you reject you end up as a bad person
3. do you really want you ex to add you
4. great way to interact with family and friends around Australia and overseas
5. do you speak to your friends more on the phone than on facebook?
6. looking at someones rant every 5 seconds and dribbling s$%t hang on ... this is all the time posting what one is thinking on fb page... please help them.

my point is ... remember having a photo album that we we to open up and share amongst a beer or dinner chatting about the good times well its becoming less and less now because people are getting lazy as facebook is an easy option to mingle and comment on pictures and posts posted up.

Is this really the right thing when its your birthday you used to get the phonecall for a happy birthday merry christmas or happy new year and ive seen this someone has announced a baby where so many congratualate on facebook when its a better option to pick up the phone? The phonecalls are slowly slowly going away cause facebook has taken over.

We're invovled with checking our phones with our headsdown on each and every message we receive.

Social media it is great way to socialize but seriously its another way to make you stay indoors and keep an eye out on what everybody is posting when you could go outside enjoy the day come home sit down for an hour and read the forums in peace as an hour is all you need to be on the net.

Just my rant but I had 600 friends and I always was FB which I only realised how much time I was always on the phone amongstfamily and friends when this wasn't a good thing if you sit back and think about it.

Let's face it, it does have its good things but and really want to loose yourself to social media.

I'll stick to the forums. ;) FB deleted for the better
