That is a very nice police vehicle..... particularly good in black.

I ahve seen a few different models of police vehicles here in Aus. I think they are used for different purposes, i have seen Hyundai, Subaru, Mercedes Vans awell as your standard Falcon and Commodore.

I think they have limited numbers of Monaro's and GT falcons too, heard a few reports of GT's and i have definately seen a Monaro.

Cool.

Wonder if Ford Aus has concidered offering simular on the Falcon and Territory.

Falcon/Fairlane/Territory for Police, military, VIP, government etc. South African market would also be interested. The territory being only a Ford would proberly attract less attention than a X5 or a 7 series. Not to mention pacific island nations, Cabramatta, etc.

The market for police cars here is tiny, there won't be anything like armoured door or anything produced. ALso consider that gun crime in Australia is probably 1% of wha tit is in America.

The rating on the doors is only level IIA ballistic protection too, not very high. Might stop a large calibre handgun.

looks good, but did they jam LED's onto it or what!!
surprises me that it's an auto tho, but maybe the yanks have forgotten how to drive manuals : .

looks like they would only any good for 1 cop at a time too, what with all the gear on and around the dash where a passenger would be.

i'd have 1 of those liberty's tomorrow too. look good, goes great!!

Was on a training couse with someon from Victoria Police Fleet Ops about 3 years ago. He told me

Subaru WRX
- Not enough space for all the gear in the boot,
- Seats were an issue for some Toggies with fat bums
- One the 3 test cars went 'bang' during a pursuit.
- Not much quicker that V8 particularly two up with all the gear.
- Lack of interior space
- Price

.....this makes sense as to why they use some Forrester Turbos. It eliminates some of the issues that the WRX presents.

LPG Vehicles - Will never buy them as they will not start if the accelerator is depressed at the same time. Think riot, think copper escaping, think car not starting. Ford refused to change this hence no E-Gas Falcons on VicPol Fleet.

Do you think you could drive a manual with all that crap in the way? Hell no.

Actually Im suprised the police here don't intergrate the computer stuff into the ICC and use a wireless keyb/mouse etc. Setups like the one above make passengering awkward and potentially dangerous. Impacts, airbag deployment, exiting or entering vechical in emergencies, vision obstruction etc.

Im planning to intergrate all my personal communications (CB, GSM, WiFi, CDMA, UHF, VHF, etc) and computer neatly into a Ghia so that it looks completely stock from the cabin and outside.

Funny, I think all general duty police cars in NSW are LPG XT's. Most Highway are either falcons or commodores but occasionally, magna, Subaru, Nissan Patrols out in the country or rural areas. Seen alot of Forrester/outbacks fire and ambo units tho.

The reason they won't start is throttle + gas when starting = backfire badly. I thought with E-throttle this wouldn't be a issue. Apparently the police have large storeage of LPG for use if petrol becomes scarce. LPG stores better than petrol. I know some major regional police stations had there own fuel stores for police/military/government. Not to mention low costs and resale issues.

At the AMC day at Bathurst last January an unmarked XR8 mocked up as a GT with stripes and wing was seen around town.
Plenty of XR6 turbos here on the Central Coast - all unmarked

Thy also have a marked Magna HWP car around

Another reason why the Police stopped use the WRX in Sydney was they use normal ULP in them (instead of PULP) ... and destroyed all of the engines ... I couldn't believe how dumb they were.

The WRXs were good for inner city driving ... but when out on the highways though ... they didn't have the top-end ... and the gearing was too short as well ... even for the auto in the WRXs.

I remember when we had the AU gas vehicles in the city. The start up problem was a big headache, they wouldn't start half the time when foot wasn't on the pedal and they were gutless......

Iagree Davway id own a liberty in an instant they are an awesome looking car, shame oz gets dudded with no STi version but there is the Tuned by STi Liberty that is actually slower then the Liberty GT but looks hot when is the STi liberty due here.
Anyway about police cars we have a White BF XR8 with blue strips, lowered with 18's instead of the 17's i think it even has blue plates i never took it as a cop car until i seen it at a random breath test site (stupid if you dont want people to know its a police car)

You want to know the thing that peeves me of about cars like that?

Answer: They can drive around with all that crap in their cars, eg. That computer for starters, radios (how many do they have, like four or so), switches, radar data, phones and stuff like that. I'M NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO USE A MOBILE PHONE WHILE DRIVING!! :

WHAT! They think they are better drivers than me! ha. What a joke!

That liberty certainly has all the bells and whistles. It even has Fast and Furious style police lights underneath the car.

Very nice looking car though. I would love one of those.

I would stick it back to him..

Officer - "Excuse me sir you have you driving lights on"

I - "Well you have leds all over the place that are even more distracting so how bout we both turn them off and call it a night hey?"

But yes, very scary but very cool.

Our unmarked cars in Vic have hubcaps, but on the Commodore's the 225/60 tyres with silver steelie behind is an easy give-away, not to mention fair bit of brake dust.

Haven't seen a turbo down here for a long time.

Default Police Car Pics

In Vic (In over 25 years driving) I have seen just about every vehicle known used as undercover cars.

The short "interesting" list is:

SAAB Aero Turbo = Hume Highway b/w Kalkallo and Albury
Porsche 911 Turbo = Melba Hwy to Mt Buller.
Every "go fast" Aussie car ever built XR6, XR8, SS etc etc
Suby Forrester GT (WRX undercover !)
Suby WRX (The real ones - although the Cops broke them after about 20K kms!!)

Still, good to see the Yanks are setting up the Legacy (Liberty) as a pursuit car ----- I drive one as a daily driver ---- although the heart still beats blue with an Oval badge !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
