I wasn't sure, but wanted to find out and found this...

Quote:
have found the answer. Twice. Both from reliable sources. And they both told me basically the same thing.

If tube amps have not been for a considerable length of time (1 year?....definetly 2-3 years or more) The power supply caps need to be "re-formed". If they are not, they may draw excessive current & then POOF! There goes your power tubes.

You need to use a Variac to slowly bring up the voltage from the power outlet. By slowly, they said maybe 30 minutes. One guy recommended removing the tubes & monitoring the current/voltage at the biasing point to make sure its not "running away" towards a meltdown (my term not his). When you are up to about 75% of the normal line voltage of 110-120 volts, turn the amps off, re-install the tubes, & continue until you reach 100% line voltage.

The other guy also said to keep the speaker connected. (I sure hope this doesn't take out my speakers if one of the caps blows).

Both said to use the Variac to slowly bring up the line voltage going into the amp.

Where's the rock'n'roll attitude, plug it in turn it to 11 and kick it in the guts.

Or take it to a amp repairer for a service, surly the pots and inputs will be scratchy, might need a vacuum to clean around the valves too.

the JCM 800s a probably worth a bit of cash these days so better safe than sorry.

I use to run a JCM 800 50W superlead head through a 100W cab.....I later ran a JMP head with a master volume mod also through a 100watt cab.

Classic tone that cannot be beaten.

these days!!!!!! I sold my XC GS ute to buy the damn thing

wasnt a bright move I sold my ute I used to take all my crap to gigs in to buy a cool amp, I had it worked out that I could get the quad in to the boot of my ZK the head was on the back seat so with my 3 guitar cases wedged between the head and the back of the front sead it was in there nice and snug

Yeah the good stuff is exxy, especially when young with no cash like me 20 years ago.

My old Tom Anderson Guitar...sadly sold.

USA 57 Strat still under the bed (EDIT: 80s reissue)

No other pics on the computer of the past guitars

Gibson Les Paul
Ernie Ball EVH
80s banana head Kramer
Hamer Centaura x 2
BC Rick Mockingbird
Kramer Pacer
70' big head strat
Yamahas x 2 (surprisingly good tone and action but neither lasted and ended up continually going out of tune)

Pics are obviously not me playing but a future guitar hero

Wow,i never knew this thread existed, so many awesome guitars! Sorry cant post any pictures but in the past ive owned a couple of strat copies and a ridgy didge fender strat (mid seventies reissue), vt 22 ampeg combo (custom), a couple zooms, morley wha wha and other pedals. Ive just joined a band (after a long layoff) and will have to go and get some gear soon, nothing too costly but must cover the range of sounds i'll be after. When i get some gear i'll post some photo's. Who's playin in bands? Keep rockin out guys!

cheers,Maka

Glad to see this thread revived, my gear list now looks like this:

Ibanez BTB300 4 string with 3 band EQ
Ibanez BTB405QMBBL 5 string, 35" neck with 3 band EQ
Ibanez SRA505QMBLB 5 string with EMG pickups and 3 band EQ
OLP Musicman 4 copy (for sale if anybody wants a cheap starter bass - $150)
Ampeg Portaflex PF500 head
Ampeg Portaflex 210 cab

I intend to add another Portaflex cab (the 115) and then get a few effects pedals and a wireless setup.

Cool thread! Some good gear posted up!

I sold most of my old gear and started getting some decent new stuff recently. Here's my gear off the top of my head...

ESP Horizon NT-II
Fender Electric Acoustic (not sure on the model, it's not the best sounding guitar)
Peavey 3120 Head
Marshall 1960 4x12 Cab
T-Rex Replica Delay Pedal
Boss Reverb Pedal
Digitech Rackmount Tuner
Other stuff I can't think of off the top of my head.

A demo of one of my band's songs:

Another
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5497021/Hone...Mix%2021-4.mp3

Ignore the stupid song names. Both are just demo's, not final mixes or anything.

Some great guitars ..... don't play myself but I thought it was a sickness my son only had but obviously others have it as well. He brought home another this week to add to the collection! I keep telling him can only play one at a time.

Anyone who is a bass player and wants to jam with a 2 other guitarists and a drummer a couple of times a week at a factory may apply as they are looking for someone!!!!

Here's another one if you're keen to have a listen. This one has much more technical playing in it than the other one, but not as heavy. This song is also recorded in drop A on a 7 string, the other was in drop G.

Tech section at 1.28

I'm glad I'm not the only musician here, I like it when my interests overlap with each other and I can share things like this.

I just had my Tele re-built by a guy called Allan Rigg. He is an absolute guru! I am amazed at the tone coming out of here now! So nice.

Tried to keep as much original equipment as possible to keep the cool patina of age. Pick ups and pots were in perfect working order, as was the bridge, so they just had a polish.

Frets shaved, new pick up selector, all new wiring and then all set up beautifully!

I can't wait to get her home on the Vox Ac30 and crank... looks like the Gibson 61 reissue will be sitting in its case for a while now while I get reaquainted with this ol' girl
