Queensland government spokesperson. It’s quite obvious that those ten people were travelling well above the posted speed limit otherwise they’d still be alive today. There was a death in Geelong last year where an old bloke riding a push bike had a heart attack and fell off his bike and onto the road where he was struck by a car. Did the heart attack kill him or being struck by the car? Either way, they still added it to the road toll. They also add suspected suicides. And they wonder why we don’t trust statistics.

No, they use the low population number to change the view of that particular figure, but forget to mention rising population in all other states.

I reckon one day they will invent acceleration cameras... if you accelerate too hard away from the lights you get fined.
You know, in the name of safety. |

For example: What we are first told… There was a fatal accident on news years eve where a ute driven by a 13 year-old crashed, killing two, a 6 or 7 year-old and a 14 year-old. Four other children were eventually air lifted to Alice Springs hospital. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/bre...-1225979591355 Three questions from me. Were they aboriginal? Was the driver affected by alcohol? Did the accident really happen on the Lake Elliott access road? See if this accident happened in Melbourne, Sydney or any other populated place, my three questions wouldn’t be needed because they would already be in the first paragraph of the story. What really happened. The so called ute was actually an NL Fairlane and there were eight kids in the car. The two children who died were 5 and 14 years old. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...section=justin The reason I ask whether the accident really happened on the Lake Elliot access road is if it didn’t, these deaths wouldn’t be able to counted on the road toll, and the passengers wouldn’t be able to access compensation for their injuries. Sooooooo, how is removing the open speed limit on NT highways or adding more speed cameras going to prevent this happening in the future? And if you don’t know where Elliot is, Google Tennant Creek and go 250 k’s up.

Seems like there's nothing we can do to stem the tide of speed cameras. You'll just have to make a point of speeding in "non-safe" areas.

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety...stics_dl4.html From these stats Ive selected the area where in Fatal Crashes the most people have passed away. From this to be a fatality on the road, I've come to the conclusion that they will most likely Be a male aged between 30-39. Have a standard (Black/gold) Licence They will be sober, not fatigued (or unknown to be fatigued) & its unknown if they are wearing a seatbelt but theres a good chance they will be. It will happen between 2pm-4pm on a Sunday The road will be 2 way undivided. They will be doing 60kph, Not speeding, It will be on a straight road in the dry in Gosford, most likely on the Pacific Highway. They will hit a tree located near an entrance/driveway caused by a distraction outside the car. So looking at this & you could say to stop the majority of crashes. Get drunk, drive tired, dont wear a seatbelt, speed, dont drive in the afternoon on a sunday & chop down all trees. P.S. im just joking with the last comment please dont break the law on the road. Just like WE will shortly in QLD.... Or maybe the Victorian people should remind the new Government that they can be in opposition just as quickly and easily as the last lot. Last edited by flappist; 04-01-2011 at 09:42 PM. |

I can see how speed cameras would lower the toll.
Road with a blackspot, 12 deaths in 2009 camera is placed there. Drivers slowdown and pay attention. 5 deaths in 2010. Not advocating the use of cameras, but its not that hard to see how they can work.

Yes but that is neither here nor there.... one can ask: How many cars travelled that road in 2009 as compared to 2010? Was the road upgraded to remove a black spot? Was it just sheer co-incidence that a larger number of crashes occured in the same spot? Was it wet weather related? Like its been said, statistics can be made to show anything.. Yes driving around like an idiot at high speed in a 60 zone is asking for trouble, but speeding alone doesnt cause accidents. Not to mention that if a driver is pulled over for speeding how likely is he to adjust his driving for that particular day at least, as opposed to speeding past a hidden speed camera and getting a "bill" in the mail 3 week later? what if the guy is doing 140kmh in a 100kmh zone.... he keeps driving for 3 more weeks before he looses his licence? More police active on the roads sends a clear message to people that they are out there, what does a hidden camera do ?

Except when the black spot was bypassed with a four lane freeway and the speed limit was dropped along with the speed tolerance. Then the penalties were increased along with a greater number of “safer” cars except they still keep referring to the statistics that were on the old road. Hmmmmm. Edit: Jim Goose kinda bet me to it.
