Hardly ever buy wheels anymore.
Their comments are so biased and out of sync with other car mags i wonder what actually goes through their head when things go to print. Few years ago every single one of them got wood for anything release from Holden. Nowa days it seems to be VW taking the fair... MOTOR is a much better mag and i couldnt care less which award they gave the car to.

Here's a list of Wheels COTYs so far. Interesting that the P76 V8 won the award, not the P76 model. Some very ordinary vehicles in the list, some seem not to be any better than their predecessor (such as VE Valiant):
1963 Renault 8 1964 Morris 1100 1965 Ford Falcon (XP) 1966 Ford Falcon (XR) 1967 Chrysler Valiant (VE) 1968 Holden Monaro (HK) 1969 Holden Torana (LC) 1970 Renault 12 1971 Chrysler Valiant Charger (VH) 1972 Award withheld 1973 Leyland P76 V8 1974 Volkswagen Passat 1975 Holden Gemini (TX) 1976 Volkswagen Golf 1977 Honda Accord 1978 Holden Commodore (VB) 1979 Award withheld 1980 Mazda 323 1981 Mercedes-Benz 380SE (W126) 1982 Holden Camira (JB) 1983 Ford Telstar and Mazda 626 (joint award) 1984 Mitsubishi Nimbus 1985 Mitsubishi Magna (TM) 1986 Award withheld 1987 Honda Prelude 1988 Holden Commodore (VN) 1989 Mazda MX-5 (NA) 1990 Lexus LS 400 1991 Honda NSX and Nissan Pulsar (N14) 1992 Mazda 626 and Ford Telstar 1993 Holden Commodore (VR) 1994 Subaru Liberty 1995 Honda Odyssey 1996 Mitsubishi Magna/Verada (TE/KE) 1997 Holden Commodore (VT) 1998 Subaru Liberty Wagon 1999 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 2000 Subaru Impreza 2001 Holden Barina (XC) 2002 Ford Falcon (BA) 2003 Mazda RX-8 2004 Ford Territory (SX) 2005 Mazda MX-5 (NC) 2006 Holden Commodore (VE) 2007 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2008 Honda Accord Euro 2009 Volkswagen Golf 2010 Volkswagen Polo 2011 Honda CR-Z |

I don't think a manual will win; JT has trouble changing gears!

maybe because most Australians want a real car that runs on petrol or diesel not some pretend warm and fuzzy tree hugging over priced white elephant

Wheels and Motor are both as biased, useless and inferior as each other. European mags are so much better, and include testers who are real drivers (ex F1, le mans, sportscars etc) articles, feedback so much better.... And relevant to real car enthusiasts...
The Volt will win this year, the VF next year. I think the TABs taking $1.01 on this... |

Of course the EB was disqualified. You can't have a Ford win the award these days: not with all of Holdens advertising dollars spent in the Wheels/Motor mag...

I remember the 1979 Wheels mag with the lemon on the front with a set of wheels under it. In fact I still have it somewhere.
The Lexus in 1990 winning the COTY was a shock to many people...not only "just a Toyota" won it, but one worth a hundred grand won it. Wheels countered, quite rightly, but saying it's a prize for the best, not the cheapest, and at the time the Lexus sedan was staggeringly good value and an amazingly built car. You can pick them up for a song now. I'm surprised the EcoBoost isn't seen as "different enough" from anything else in Fords lineup to be considered. I mean, most of the mags usually fall about in orgasmic fits whenever Ford or Holden slap a few extra stickers on a Commodore or Falcon and call it some special name or "limited edition" when it's the same old same old in a new dress. |

may be you guys should release your own magazine and award.
"Falcon Monthly" where every review the Falcon wins and every COTY is a Falcon That way you can't complain, you get the winner you want all the time no matter the circumstance. No "biased" journos either.

At least back in those days when Peter Robinson was running the show, they had the backbone to withold the award regardless of the potential fallout from advertisers. They've since "rectified" that loop hole and now the award must be given every year, regardless of how mediocre that years releases might have been. Quote:

you seem to be missing the point ( or ignoring it ) it is not if the falcon wins or not that is the issue. ford have come up with a great new combination in the EB and to exclude such a well engineered car shows how flawed the award really is. to be a true COTY it should include all cars currently available in the new market

You mean those places with all the trains and busses? If short range cheap vehicles are so perfectly suitable in these cities why are they not full of smart cars and other tiny bubbles rather than 4WDs, Aurion/Camry and V8s? |

Might pay you to go to a large city once in a while, cause there are plenty of small cars in Melb,Sydney etc...in fact the take up is so big that hardly anyone is buying a big aussie v6/v8....the Mazda 3 is selling by the shipload. Even Ford are ignoring large cars...sad but true.... |

Wheels. A foreign owned magazine that seems to be just reporting on foreign cars.
Wheels COTY needs to be renamed "Wheels Base Model of the Year" - as cars with large model ranges are heavily disadvantaged. To stem the hemorrage, they need to make exceptions to their 'rules' for locally made cars when it comes to these tests. Otherwise they are as relevant to Australia as "Top Gear UK" or "Car and Driver". And given I have no parochial reason to buy either Motor or Wheels anymore, they are going to have to compete for my money on equal terms with foreign magazines, who provide more timely coverage and reviews of the same foreign product that Wheels covers on release, and in most cases just plain write it up in a way that entertains me more. Oh, and there aren't nearly as many repetitive stories on Porsche either. In fact, Wheels has earned the acronym JABPR round these parts. Just Another Bloody Porsche Review. Lukeyson

They are! The only Falcons and Aurions I see getting around Melbourne are those in taxi livery. In the outer burbs there might be a few bogans getting around in big V8s or 4WDs but not in town that's for sure.

We are constantly told how evil we are because we don't embrace hybrids and electrics and just pay whatever is asked...which neatly avoids the question of what the rest of us without easy access to public transport are supposed to do to get around. You can't ignore the needs or scoff at people who don't happen to live in Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane... Yes, a lot of people live in the cities...but a lot of people don't. I don't want to have to be thought of as a second class (motoring) citizen because I want the luxury of just jumping in the car and driving where I like when I like, without having to consider whether it's fully charged, where I can recharge it at the other end, will it reach there on a charge, how much weight am I loading it up with, etc. |
