Oh no! Im really upset by this.
I really hope he pulls through OK.
After losing Steve I and P.B last week it would be awful to lose Hammond this week.

Prayers and thoughts with him and his family.

Hopefully he makes a quick recovery. The news report says his in a stable condition so thats good news.

The show wouldnt be the same without him. Little champ that bloke is.

Press release from the Top Gear website
Quote:
September 21, 2006
Richard Hammond hurt in crash
Richard Hammond remains seriously ill in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car.

The accident happened during filming for the new series of Top Gear at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.

Richard was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary's neurological unit. A hospital spokesman said this morning: 'He has seen some improvement overnight, but remains in a serious but stable condition'.

Richard's wife Mindy and their daughters Willow and Isabella are at his bedside. We'll update you on his condition as we find out more, but for now our thoughts are with his family.

We've spoken to Jeremy this morning - he's on his way to Leeds to see Richard and Mindy and will be giving us an update shortly.

Obviously the crash will be fully investigated by the Health and Safety Executive and the BBC.

The BBC said in a statement: 'We are looking into all the factors of this accident and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage until we know the full situation'.

I just read this on another forum. Sad news but at least he is still kicking.

Funny guy Hammond, i wish him the best for his recovery. He is very lucky that at those speeds he survived.

It appears he has a brain injury. That seems to be the most common injury in high speed motorsport crashes these days. The driver is protected from almost everthing - e.g. broken bones and burns are very rare injuries compared to three decades ago. However there is no way from stopping the brain from being belted against the inside of the skull. Hope for his sake that he fully recovers from this accident.

At least the docs are 'reasonably optimistic' that Hamster will recover from his brain injury...I'd say he'll be out of action for 6 months. I'm going to miss him taking the mickey out of Clarkson for a while...

Wish him a good speedy recovery.

Reports say he was talking after the accident and James May has been quoted "Despite everything he's been through, he still seems like the Richard I know and love." so hopefully everything will be bad to normal soon.

This really does show how safety has improved over time. Simply surviving a crash at speed in amazing let alone being able to talk at the scene.

Lumpy

i would of thought if you'd sustained 'extensive' brain damage you wouldnt be responding to anything.

my thoughts precisely... although the brain is a reasonably large organ and there's a fair bit to damage. the fact he can talk and hasnt been put into a coma is probably a good sign tho

It largly depends on what part of the brain he damaged. Some areas are for motor functions others for speach, memory etc.

Some people have been known to suffer huge brain injuries and pull through with almost no ill effects. There is even a possibility there will be NO permement damage even

Saw Clarkson on the news, apparently he was at his bedside for 12 hours straight.

C'mon Hampster.. :(

I have a funny feeling he'll be okay though, just give it time

Shame about this.

Once again, along with Peter Brock, that no matter how "skilled" you are, speed has the potential to kill.

Things like this are a top lesson to people thinking the streets are a place for speed.
