I see the NRMA is lobbying for an increase in the number of points because a lot of people are being caught out by what they refer to as technology advancement in motoring. And how many more points would we get?? One extra...

You said she was just checking for messages, but not using it. If she did happen to have a message would she have started using it?
Surely I'm not the only one sick of beeping people most days because they have their head buried in their phone at the lights. |

They can install hands-free kits or heaven forbid, use the built-in Bluetooth connectivity for when they're one-up. And I'm pretty sure the offsider would be smart enough to relay said message to the driver or advise the caller that he or she is driving. Are you serious? Do you really think they have some special training which removes the risk they pose to themselves and other roads users if using a phone???

If you read all the posts in this thread then you would not need to say anything. Look at post #13 - it says it all

my hands free came with the stereo unit (alpine) for $249 with heaps of other options and it will tell me I have a text and ask if I want to ignore it or have it read to me if I have it read it then gives me the option to reply by having the sender of the text called
my previous unit a blackberry (that the alpine replaced) actually did voice to text so asked if I wanted to reply what I said in reply was sent as text was bout the same price as the alpine and cheaper than a fine

Inquiry made over radio, info sent to screen, but that does require, taking eyes of road,so still not perfect. I believe some electronics mob, have built a heads up device for, mobile phones. No you don't have to touch the phone, but you still have to divert your attention,to look at display, the only time, this type of tech is ok,is if your a fighter pilot, locking on to enemy target, not driving a vehicle on a busy road, fighter pilots don't have to bother about changing lanes or on ramp traffic, you the driver of the car do. It is quite simple,if you don't own a business, turn the bloody phone off, before driving off,or if it is that you need be contacted 24/7,then buy a hands free kit. 405 dollar fine, would buy a top end, hands free kit. I don't see the logic, in owning a $800+ dollar phone and being tight fisted enough, not to get hands free kit. Some people just have to learn the hard way, usually at some one else's expense.

I just ask Siri to read my texts to me via bluetooth.
Sometimes she actually understands my command!

Cops here need to enforce it more, I see at least 10 tradies, soccer mums, teenage girls and and others every single day, at intersections, stop lights, stop signs and on the road on their phones.

I've heard of people being pulled over on the side of the road taking a phone call and still getting charged.
Even with the car in park apparently that is not good enough. Car has to not have keys in the ignition now for you to take a call. |

We need to go back to the days where you were lucky if you had an AM Radio to distract you in the car, and to make a call, you had to pull over and find a pay phone.

Before mobile phone laws you would be breached under a traffic law called "not in full control of a motor vehicle" so if you were changing the chanel on your transistor you could be booked. Several years ago it added mobile specific amendements, so if the vehicle was parked on public property or private throughfare i.e. shopping centre carpark, with the keys in the ignition you could be ticketed. Same extensiom applys to PCA/DUI. Even with hands free i think your not in full control.

So where does some one stand if for example the have FG MK2 and they are not touching their phone at all but dialling a number through the touch screen function of the car?

If you even think about touching your phone in NSW, plod will swipe right every time. A few colleagues have been caught at lights in the city by undercovers that will walk around vehicles to make sure the phone is left alone, even while stationary at a red.
That's my dilemma. In the wonderful world of metrics, I *must* respond to a new job within 10 minutes - once you remove the 9 or so minutes that have been already taken up 'by the machine', I have one minute to respond to a new job. Which makes it virtually impossible if I'm driving (which occupies half of my day). If I'm running late to a job? On a carpar.. err, I mean motorway - no place to pull over. I had to touch the phone to dial out on my hokey car bluetooth from our app, impossible if I then had to dial additional numbers after dialling the phone number. Might be a little different with SYNC2, hopefully. Surprised by the 6 points but mobile phone usage is one of those offences that rarely gets a warning. |

Not sure, ive been out of the job for a few years knownow, but reading the act i would say you may get a ticket. You need to that common law traffict act is a regulated law not set on presedent you can take it to court but your not testing the law only the individual case. But im not sure. I was never in the HWP so traffic is not my strong suit.

I still don't understand why people can not just press one button and speak to the person calling, they always have to touch their phones.
Fine away I say.
