Actually, XR was first used in the Mercury Cougar XR7 back in 1967.

The term XR, first coined in 1991 on the EB Falcon, is a term used to describe some high-performance Ford vehicles in Australia. A common misconception about the designation is that it was borrowed from Ford Europe where it stands for 'Experimental Research', when, in fact, it was a tribute to the 1966 XR Falcon, the first Falcon model to offer a V8 engine option.[1] The first XR's were the XR6, S-XR6 and XR8 (these names were applied to the more performance oriented Ford Falcons)
just googled the question and that is what i found

The first XR was Mercury Cougar XR7 in 1967
In 1980 Ford Europe released an XR3 Escort.

Off topic a bit - but I've always thought that "GT" meant "Gran Turismo" or "Grand Touring" and the "HO" meant either "High Output" or in the UK sense "Handling Options" (Jaguar). I think in the Aussie sense that it means "High Output". I'll squat to **** if I'm wrong... That's just my two cents worth guys & girls. No biggie!

Ford had the RS Escorts in the 70's meaning "rally sport" There were also "rally pack" options on cortina. I always thought XR to mean something like"xtra rally"

Thought HO was for "homologation" as they only built 250 for racing purposes

What does SR stand for? All these acronyms bring back memories of me wondering what GL, GLi, S stood for on the back of all those cars as a kid.

I think SR means series runout. A few extra add ons before the arrival of a new model.

I'm with you Jason. I think that the XR from EB onwards was both a homage to the XR Falcon (where we first saw the GT badge), and also the XRs from Ford worldwide.

Couple of other weird ones from AMC (American Motors Corporation) ..
AMX = American Motors eXperimental
SST = Super Sonic Transport (!!!???)

Found something that says that in 1967 Ford (US) used XL to mean Deluxe, XR to mean Luxury. That led me to find this quote on another site.

"If the driver preferred luxury over performance, the XR-7 package was available."
