It is the latest episode. Season 9, episode 3. I also thought Stig's American cousin in the episode was hilarious, "Big Stig"

What's it all mean?

Sweet Home Alabama was Lynard Skynard's response to Neil Young's songs "Alabama'' and "Southern Man" which were critical of certain southern attitudes. If you turn up the volume near the line "And I heard Mr Young sing about her" you should be able to hear Young singing the words "Southern Man".

In the liner notes to his greatest hits album, Decade, Young wrote that Southern Man "could have been written on a civil rights march after stopping off to watch Gone With The Wind at a local theater."

This song has often been misconstrued as indicating that Skynard's lead singer, Ronnie Van Zandt and Neil Young, disliked one another. However, Van Zandt was a great fan of Young and even wore Neil Young T-shirts while performing. (It was been suggested that Van Zandt was actually buried wearing a Neil Young T-shirt, after he and Steve Gaines died in a plane crash in 1977. Van Zandt's grave was actually randsacked by people trying to prove or disprove this theory, and his body was relocated to an undisclosed location).

The words "Muscle Shoals does have the Swampers" is a reference to a group of studio musicans that played on many recordings at different studios in Muscle Shoals, (where Skynard spent a lot of time). "The Swampers" were often requested because they played so well as a group.

Incidentally, Lynard Skynard weren't from Alabama, they were from Jacksonville, Florida. Gary Rossington has been quoted as saying the song was written on the road while they were travelling through Alabama.

Forgive me, I was'nt that old when Nixon was impeached, what does the reference Nixon imply, that its OK for the republicans to be crooks if you are from the south. What does the Governor of Alabama have to do with it?

You have to note that when Ronnie Van Zandt wrote this song he invoked both irony and sarcasm.

The reference to Governor Wallace is followed by “Boo Boo Boo”. Van Zandt hated the actions taken by Wallace and the adverse perception of the South generated by those actions, and intended for this song to relate that to the listener, together with his thoughts on the excesses of the Nixon government.

In the lines "Watergate does not bother me," (because he didn't cause Watergate or create it), and "does YOUR conscience bother YOU?" Van Zandt wanted listeners to think about their own actions, not those of people they have no control over.

[Edit]: Ronnie van Zandt wrote the lyrics to Sweet Home Alabama. Ed King wrote the tune.

I think it was the other way around. Alabama's governor's were, from the late 1800's to about the late 1980's Democrat's (hows that for a shocker!)
I'm guessing they were actually having a shot about Nixon and Watergate rather than agreeing with it. Watergate wouldnt bother them if they were Democrats.

I was told once that the "friendly" folks start at St Louis, Mo, and just get friendlier the further south you go. My experiences validate that view.

However, it seems the stereotypical opinions from here in Testosterone Central are contrary.

I used to go over for a month three or four times a year, for around six or seven years.

Most of the time was spent in a rectangle bordered by Detroit, Cincinnati, St Louis and Chicago.

Got further south quite regularly as well.

Always had large amounts of cash on me, always dealing with individuals.
Never had a problem.
