Surely there has to be some level of responsibility by ISPs to stop this from happening though.

Shape the traffic or cut it off all together by default when limit has been reached. You can always purchase data blocks if you need more.

Ive pulled 230 gig so far this billing period.
Whenever I get asked about internet (mostly by relatives) I say, stay away from optus or telstra and make sure there are no extra charges if the limit is exceeded. Shaping sucks but so does a huge bill.
Most people think they will never use much, but once you get used to the speed its addictive and you will use more.
Glad the OP had a win with the ISP

As for unexpected bills.... horse 1k, dog 2k, another horse 1k and the horse died

Optus has been slowing down the speed after the data allocation has been used up since I got it (8 years ago).
Not sure about the wireless rubbish, I wouldn't touch it.

my plans with optus and on that plan its 30c mb if i go over the limit, to a maximum of $300 then it slows it down.

Check in the history and see what sites are being visited and also check in the private browsing section if you have that. Check your usage every day and or every half day to see where it is going. If you don't know how then its time to find out. Or get an unlimited account. 2gig is SFA these days. I'm sure it's not a lot but we go near 21 a month inmy house but I hear of up to 80gig and more in the households at work.

I used to say this, but I am now on Bigpond. They are the only ones here that offer ADSL2+, iinet told me they were not bothering because of the governments fibre optic crap and they had no idea if it would be tomorrow or 3yrs till it got here. All up I got 100gb at 8mb, then I still had a phone to pay for etc. All up per month cost me $180. I switched to telstra and I get ADSL2 with 100gb plus all my calls, local, mobile and STD for $128pm, and I am shaped if I exceed. Whilst I think it stinks they count uploads, to be honest your uploads are generally so low it isn't a real issue. 4 months in so far and no issues to complain about.

On topic. Biggest bill I have got is $900 for 1month mobile. I went back to pre paid until caps came in.

Got a bill for $11,000 for electricity once. Turned out they either read the meter wrong or entered in the meter reading wrong. The bill have the kW used for two periods, the first one had a rather large number for the final reading and the second period had a smaller reading for the final figure. So if you took the first readings start number and the final reading finish number, you'd have the correct bill, but it seems their billing system couldn't handle a negative amount and charged me a ridiculous amount.
I.e.
Start for period 1 - 10000
Finish for period 1 - 50000
Start for period 2 - 50000
Finish for period 2 - 12000

The worst telco bills I have personally seen were a Telstra TID bill for over $35,000 and a IInet bill for over $80,000.

I once had a fight with TID over a customer's bill which they absolutely refused to back down on until I got one of their senior technical people to explain to the bill nazis that it was physically impossible for the customer to have drawn as average of 70Kbytes per second for the month on a 56k dialup modem.......

IInet bill of $80,000, how did they manage that. Being with westnent and iinet for 5yrs before switching I always thought they were the sort of company that would not let that happen.

Standard service is $750-$800. I had to replace a screen (tiny chip) and a bezel insert.

I am sure I could go and get it serviced cheaper but I prefer to go to the authorized repairer

GF's cat had blocked bladder, couldn't pee and was in fair bit of strife....local vet said go to RSPCA, the RSPCA said he may not last through the night unsupervised (they closed at 8pm), better to go to a 24 hour place where they can monitor him....just happens to be one just down the road.....have to fork over $450 just to admit him! Wasn't expecting that....and it doesn't even count the hourly rate, cost of meds & vet tests etc....

Ended up being closer to $1200 by the end, but our three-legged tripod cat Tonka survived, and is still around....atm sprawled in my lap purring as I write this!

CSA.... normally was around $400 a month, paid it for a few years then got threatening letters saying I owe them $14,000..... and if i came back i wouldn't be allowed to leave australia......
plenty of abuse, copies of all correspondence sent, 3 different case officers... and it was sorted.
i definitely have no problem paying child support, and pay above and beyond what certain agencies ask me to, but to get a bill out of the blue for that money made me realise just how it could upset a partner who may have not had the cash handy.

Commercial not home connection in Sydney CBD about 1996 or 1997. The billing program had a woopsie.

In my experiance as an iinet customer I found they were great when things were going well but if something goes wrong they are absoutly pathetic.

When I was 17 I bought a modem for my computer and started connecting to Compuserve Pacific. I bought a couple of stupid things like a Terminator screensaver for Windows 3.11, etc, stupid stuff. While downloading those things there was a message stating 'You will not be charged for connection time' (as you were downloading something you just bought)
Stupid me thought that included the toll call to call Compuserve in the first place.

I was worried about the bill and warned my parents there might be up to $50 worth of toll calls, but I would pay for them...

The first month I got (well my parents) a $1,200 phone bill and $1,000 Visa bill, I almost had a heart attack.
The next month the rest of the charges came through, another $1,000 in total.

I just managed to pay it all off.

Did you leave your phone on roaming? I have heard this is how people are stung when overseas. Best method is to buy one of their telco's prepaid sims.

I received a hospital bill once for $520,813. Thought that has to be a mistake, rang them up and they said there was a mistake. Receive the replacement one a few days later - $543,112.

Needless to say I eventually got it sorted. It was still expensive but no where near half a mill!!
