Some parents have big cheque books, some get finance and others get out personal loans. Something I would never do. Id rather own my car clear and legit with no overheads.

Most don't seem to understand the idea of interest. A few guys who I don't associate with anymore took out 15k of loans for mini trucks/commo's and seemed to think they'd pay back 15k or a little more over time. In the mean time they spent every cent on their cars and the minimum that they could in repaying their loans.
Last I heard one of them was 25K under.

During the time I have been on my L's and P's. I have had;
- 1 Nissan Bluebird
- 1 Honda Accord
- 1 VN Commodore V6
- 1 VN Calais V8
- 2 VP Commodore V6
- 1 VQ Caprice V8
- 1 Ford Falcon BA XT
I think thats it... As you can see, the two first cars were cheap . VN/VP's are my favourite commodores, but the BA Falcon converted me to FORD!

Some people just work hard and save well. I had a TX5 for the majority of my P plates and then bought a WRX.

I think there is 2 blokes with XR8s on their Ps too or they were at least a while back anyways.

The best way is not to throw away hours when they are offered to you IMO aswell as not wasting money all the time. When you're at work you can't really spend much anyways and you're earning more at the same time ;)

Yeah I had to get a loan but that was I was broke, just moved out of home and my Laser was bout to run out of rego. Parents are tightasses (had to leave home at 18) so no hope there.

I'm a year ahead of schedule on my loan so I guess I'm going good.

I have to work fulltime though. But if I wasn't working I would be asleep or out wasting petrol so who cares I guess.

Loans aren't the only way P platers can afford cars.

I just got off my P's a week ago and for the last 3 years I've owned a VX sedan and an FZR 250. Everyone thought I either had a loan or generous parents, but it was neither.

I started working at 15 and saved up a lot of money. I'm still a full time student and joined Uni as soon as I left school. All of my money was sitting in a managed fund, increasing with the boom in the sharemarket.

I was able to buy my VX and the bike and still have plenty of money left over.

At the time I bought my VX, I could very easily have purchased the VY or BA, but the BA would've been pushing my price limit and there wasn't enough difference between the VY and VX for me to go the VY.

If you hit the auctions or shop around for a good deal, current model Falcodores really don't cost that much. A lot of P platers work damn hard for their money and would like to see the benefits in something they enjoy. Anything with wheels has always interested me and I'd rather enjoy getting behind the wheel of my car everyday than have a bigger number on a slip of paper I can't enjoy for a while.

i had:

VP V6 Wagon - Traded
VS Calais V6 - Gave to my bro(such a nice car...miss it sometimes when i see it and hear it)
BA XR6 - Still have it

i admit now it wasnt all that smart of me to get the xr6 on finance, but it is such a beautiful car, the way it drives and feels and goes(couldnt resist the sunroof, full black leather and premium audio), the thing i love best is the fact it doesnt use oil and doesnt have the commodore driveline vibration...just wished it sounded as good as the VS Calais :(

The way I see it with my loan is, in another 4 years, i'll own my XR6 fully, that still looks great for its age and then I can work on worrying about getting a house loan with the credit history I have, which is at the moment very good because im ahead on both my loans and credit card is always paid off in quarter the time then expected.
