Through lectures as part of my degree we've discussed the topic of carbon footprints and more importantly the ability (read NON-ability) to offset one's carbon footprint. What did a lecture theatre full of architectural students, proffesors and lecturers conclude? Biggest load of shyte ever.
That would be interesting to be in I reckon hereing different opinions from different professions. Although i think global warming and "carbon footprint" is somewhat of a myth I do like the debates this topic brings between people

i dont mow my grass as often as i used to and i am helping the planet live longer. i help the environment by not releasing exhaust from the mower and the extra leaves on my grass suck up more co2 and release delicious oxygen for me and my family to consume

its all about the little things and it makes me feel better than other people who drive thirsty cars

quick question, with the above pic, is there one that shows population vs emissions???
this showing how much of an effect each person has in each country in order from highest to lowest (make sense????)

No, it showing the amount of CO2 per person not total emissions.
Australia is around no. 14 in the world per person in CO2 emission - mainly due to transport and power generation.

So Aust with population of 20 mill of course would be high. China with pop over 1 billion so per person would be lower but can still emit 15 times more than aust, or any other lightly populated country and still be lower per person. India and many other nations that dont appear 'red'. Figures can always be manipulated to any argument.

Australia only emit 1.5% of the world emissions so the above chart may be true per person but is very misleading as a country overall. China, India, USA need to clean their acts up more then most countries. In saying that while these countries pollute their environment I believe there is no such thing as global warming caused by humans.

There should have been an option "I care about the environment but am too lazy to do anything about it".

I buy carbon credits to offset the exhaust emissions from my car and am on a green electricity plan. I use power-saving appliances too. I might not make a difference myself but I'm personally making less of a contribution to pollution than I used to.

I fail to believe that people don't think the human race causes pollution. Have you never left the city or perhaps never been to the city and seen/smelt the difference in the air quality between city and country? Have you ever been to a big city like London and seen the smog haze that surrounds it? Do you really think that pollution will have no long-term effect on our planet and we should just keep cranking it out as fast as possible and don't worry about it?

Sure we might not produce as much as india or china but we have a fraction of the people those countries have. Half their populations are living in small towns with very very basic amenities while most of our population is in our coastal cities with aircons/heaters, tv's and god knows what else cranked and driving back and forth to the shops in V8s. What would your response be if every indian and chinese person led the same lifestyle as you do and cranked out as much pollution (per capita) as every australian - would you be ok with that or would we use a different representation of the numbers to justify our lifestyle?

We should be thankful for our modern society and all the luxuries it brings but that doesn't mean we should be ignorant of the cost of those luxuries. Absolutely we should question the greenies and scientists and of course we're not all going to go live on an eco-friendly commune in mud huts but theres gotta be some compromise to make sure future generations enjoy the same quality of life we do.

thanks for that map, we do emmit a bit per person, but meh, not that bad when you think about the average amount of travel we do per person compared to a lot of other countries.

adrianb: when you buy carbon credits, where does the money go to? also have you read the global cooling epidemic that's supposed to be coming?

I respect te environment every time I go bush riding my quad! If the mud is too much and I may get bogged , I will respect it and go another way ! Same with trees and stuff. If its too big I will respect it and not mow it down if its in my way ! :

I hate how the governmant hangs it on general houses and asks "what are you doing?" I also love the black balloons. PFFT. How about taking a look at huge industrial factories that let off emissions and fumes daily, by the truck load.
Sorry but me leaving my tv piolet light on is nothing compared to the Arts Center lights.

FUN FACTS about CARBON DIOXIDE

* Of the 186 billion tons of CO2 that enter earth's atmosphere each year from all sources, only 6 billion tons are from human activity. Approximately 90 billion tons come from biologic activity in earth's oceans and another 90 billion tons from such sources as volcanoes and decaying land plants.

* At 383 parts per million CO2 is a minor constituent of earth's atmosphere - less than 4/100ths of 1% of all gases present. Compared to former geologic times, earth's current atmosphere is CO2- impoverished.

* CO2 is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Plants absorb CO2 and emit oxygen as a waste product. Humans and animals breathe oxygen and emit CO2 as a waste product. Carbon dioxide is a nutrient, not a pollutant, and all life - plants and animals alike - benefit from more of it. All life on earth is carbon-based and CO2 is an essential ingredient. When plant-growers want to stimulate plant growth, they introduce more carbon dioxide.

* CO2 that goes into the atmosphere does not stay there but is continually recycled by terrestrial plant life and earth's oceans-- the great retirement home for most terrestrial carbon dioxide.

*If we are in a global warming crisis today, even the most aggressive and costly proposals for limiting industrial carbon dioxide emissions would have a negligible effect on global climate!

*"Greenhouse gases" in Earth's atmosphere also influence Earth's temperature, but in a much smaller way. Human additions to total greenhouse gases play a still smaller role, contributing about 0.2% - 0.3% to Earth's greenhouse effect.
