Replacing MB rear brake pads

There's actually two forces you need to do, turn and (equally important) push at the same time. If you're not pushing on the piston it won't retract. You don't have to open the bleed screw, it's not needed.

To be clear, push as you turn and it should return.

Thanks Cobrin, I tried pushing as I turned - obviously not hard enough....

I was using one of those cube style wind back tools, and I cannot get a lot of force on the piston.

I have ordered a wind back kit off eBay, should be here Wednesday. Hopefully it will go back with a little force. It does turn clockwise to wind in doesn't it?

I think I did clockwise for both sides, didn't really think about it, just pushed as I turned and it started to move back in noticeably so by the time it completed a full 360 it were done.

So one rotation should get it there?

I would of turned mine dozens of times. I initially started with a pair of needle nose pliers and I though it moved in a little. When I changed to the cube tool, there was no noticeable retraction at all.

The piston was a long way out, the pads had just got to the grinding noise point so next to no friction material left on the inner pad. Hopefully hasn't gone past some stop.....

I tried initially with needle nose pliers, but it soon became apparent that wasn't going to work. I put the old pads in and left it for another day.

But when that day came (metal scraping sound), I had an elbow injury and had to pay someone to change them for me.

I've read in a couple of places that the cube tool doesn't work on the Mondeo and you need the proper retractor.

I think so, but that would also be conditional to how hard you're pushing and if you had opened the bleed valve on top of that. From what I remember it were pretty straight forward but my pushing force may be harder than some, but it weren't insurmountable.

The special tool has a reaction plate which pushes against the other side of the caliper as you wind it in:

At least remove the brake fluid reservoir cap to release pressure. I just opened the bleed nipples when I did mine.

I tried both opening the cap and cracking the bleed nipple. I couldn't get enough force to push back and turn by hand the piston.

Hopefully I can sort this out this afternoon - its costing me $50 a day to drive my Landcruiser to work.......

My concern was not to make it easier to wind the caliper in but to avoid possible pressure build up in the reservoir. Opening the bleed screws I thought might avoid pushing crud back into the lines, two birds.

Well what a difference the right tool makes.

I spent a whole afternoon trying to do the first side, finished it in 10 minutes today and i reckon it took 15 minutes to do the other side.

Don't try this without a proper tool would be my advice.....
