Absynth being made from wormwood used to be banned , no where as bad as some claim and apart from high booze content has any doubtful further effects...

Absynth contains THC which is the active ingredient in Marijuana. Thats why its said to give you hallucinations if you drink enough of it. If it has THC it WILL have other effects other than get you drunk.

Tastes a lot like licorice. Had the real stuff in Poland recently, seems to be different from the stuff we get here, both versions ended my night in a stream of vomit :

It is the "thujone" content that supposedly causes hallucinations of which i have never experienced... Absynthe has no THC in it whatsoever ... I wish it did

"For many years thujone was thought to act on the cannabinoid receptors similar to THC based on studies that only looked at the molecules' shapes. This is known to be false today and studies show thujone does not activate these receptors..."

I had a mate bring a bottle back from Prague last year and it was supposed to be the stuff you can't get here - it was like drinking metho and sends you on your way quickly but no hallucinations or hangover

Absinthe, one of the drinks I stay well away from. Unfortunately its one of a few drinks that tends to make me go from happy drunk to angry drunk.

Absynth is popular in Martini's....which is like a full glass-sizes shot of pure grog as it is! I've usually had it with Vermouth and gin

Couple of those gets you well on the way

Pffft 70% 80%. Thats pretty panzy stuff i prefer Everclear

Everclear is a brand of grain alcohol (ethanol), available at concentrations of 95% alcohol (190 proof) and 75.5% (151 proof).

Since 95.6% ethanol and 4.4% water is an azeotrope, meaning that simple distillation can not concentrate the alcohol further, 191 proof spirits are essentially the maximum proof easily available for consumption.

Due to Everclear's lack of sugar and impurities (congeners), it may make drinkers less vulnerable to hangovers[citation needed]. Everclear (or any high proof grain alcohol) is rarely consumed straight and is nearly always used as a mixer.

Yeah we have the "fake" stuff over here. My boss's daughter is overseas and sent a real one back here to one of her friends. apparently theres a way to drink it ( i dont know ive never had it), and if you dont do it right then it tastes like crap, but if you do it right, apparently its really good.

Strong word of warning to those of you who like to dable with Absinthe - it has the ability to cause major organ failure, amongst other things.

Awesome stuff isn't it Schnoods ... I asked nicely enough and was given the last two shots out of a "behind the bar" bottle at Temple Bar in Smith St Collingwood (after drinking Corona's all afternoon) .... I was supposed to work the next day across the road at Mayfields but ended up too crook to do anything but lay in bed and groan for 24hrs :

like blokes here have said.

all my nights on absinthe apart from last night have ended up in chunder - in the garden, in a mates laundry, in a mates car on a lady, in my old mans car, at the bar. I survived last night but slept with a bucket close by. just take it easy

absinthe and redbull is the way to go. have 4 of those after a few to get you started and you wont sleep more than 3 hours that night. when your already drunk they taste really really good but have a few vodka mixes or something before hand do not mix with beer lol

From what I have heard from uni students that if you get the Australia spec Absinthe and mix it with wormwood tea which you can buy from herbal stores it gets you plastered and makes you halleucinate.

In Brisbane I have seen 80% Absinthe but is fairly steep.

IMHO you could replace the absinthe with mouthwash and nobody would be the wiser.

If you want to do it properly, you're going to need to get some liquid opium. You drip the opium into the Absynthe, and burn the suger over it.

Be warned, this is not a GOOD idea.

Get hold of some Grappa from Italy(spelling?) if you want something strong, or even Pocine, from Ireland. they will knocj your socks off, make Absynthe and Bacardi 151 taste like lolly water

I drink Absinthe quite regularly, its just one of those drinks you need experience to drink it. I personally like the traditional method of dripping ice water through a sugar cube, once the cube is dissolved, you've got the right mix. Then you sip it. Not the same way as drinking bourbon and cokes.

I have a friend in france who regularly sends me bottles. It is the licenced copy of the very first brand of absinthe, and is as close as you can get to the original.

Its not the most potent, but has a higher concentration of thujone, and lacks various heavy metal additives that can still be in modern copies.

The thing with lots of modern versions, is that its affected by modern laws for one. And secondly, when you add water to absinthe, it goes from being a emerald to turquoise green, to a milky green. This is due to the fact that the water is merely dispersed in droplet form, rather than mixing completely. In the traditional recipie, this happened naturally due to its ingredients, however those are now banned, and so we use additives to make it turn milky artificially when water is added, which can cause problems for some people.

There are other methods of drinking it, such as dropping in the cube of sugar, and allowing it to slowly break up, and then give it a light stir, and set it alight just before drinking it.

No doubt its the goth in me, but I enjoy just relaxing with a small glass of absinthe in a dark room with some music and insense. This can often be enhanced herbally...

the imported waterd down stuff is horrible and i wouldnt be drinking it if i had to pay for it, well never again.....be prepared for a tough night if drinking more than 16 in a row (my bday and panasonic was paying)

the original stuff apparently contains broken glass to cut the inside of your stomach to get absorbed quicker, you can get this but only from some places, yes this stuff is potent ..... again only drink if your not paying for it..... or if you have a bucket nearby
