$650 for the fronts, and $650 for the rears for sedans, utes will require bigger backing plates so that is $250 extra.
nah. got about 10 000 kays on them.

YES!!!! Just got my brakes on last week, stuffed around getting them powder coated and rebuilt, but with slotted rotors, braided lines and some good pads, they are very kick ***.

When the car is clean I'll take some pics and put them in the BA thread.

AU2 - BF, any brakes that bolt on to one model, will bolt onto another, so you can put Terry/BF brakes on your AU2 onwards. If you can get them cheap, which you should be able to, BA brakes are a worthy upgrade on an AU.

Your right mate, $60 is very cheap upgrade for series 1.
If you were to buy new BA rotors, calipers and pads, i dont think they would be much cheaper than the setup FTG is selling, and definatly not as good.

Anyone with a series 1 au want some au2 xr8 brakes let me know, i have some for sale, only $60, front calipers with lines, new front pads, front rotors need a machine, and a set of rear rotors needs machining.

Would I need the lines from the BA or will my old ones be right?

That's it. AU2 is simple, AU1 not so simple.

You do need the BA brake lines for the front as the caliper has it in a slightly differant position.

if that's the case you're probably better off getting braided ones, especially if you have to buy brand new rubber ones

OK, I'm seriously thinking about this now, will go with at least AU2 calipers/rotors, possibly BA if I can get some at the right price... Will the ABS sensors etc be compatible from my AU1 with AU2 or BA brakes?

I can get everything I need to do the AU2 conversion for under $500 here in Brisbane. JC I saw what FTG quoted you, seems to be a lot comparatively!

Yeh - stupid price they quoted since I already have more than 50% of what's required. You'd think a site sponsor would actually look after us, wouldn't you?

Any chance you could give me the wreckers name you got your price from, I might just see if they have more. I've tried our local ones, and all I can get is LHS lower control arm and stub for $185 total, but would then still need to source RHS plus swaybar. At least the local Canberra wrecker's prices are at least more consistent with what you've been quoted, just that Canberra wreckers don't really do a lot of AU2 s etc - they still go interstate.

Yeah no probs JC, I'll send you a PM. There's 2 different ones actually, one has the whole setup for $450, the other says $495. I'm going to go with the $495 mob though, I like the way they operate better. I rang them again today and they'll do BA calipers & rotos in the package for no extra cost, so I'm pretty happy about that. Still want to confirm the ABS will hook straight up to BA calipers though, although I presume it will. Is any sort of engineering cert or anything required for changing brakes over? I don't think there would be, just if anyone can confirm this. Cheers!

when I was looking at BA brakes I was going to do front only, how ever was told that if I put 298mm on front and left the standard size on the rear that it would cause a braking inbalance between front and rear....meaning that the braking bias as such woukd move more to the front and the rears wont be working as hard, something like 75/25, which would create extra wear on the front pads and make braking whilst cornering dangerous.Dont know if it is true or not, but sounds feasible, but then again I wouldnt know..lol.

Dunno about that. Look at a BF GT, 4 piston Brembos on the front, single piston PBR's at the rear......

That exact thought occurred to me, dunno what the answer is though. Should only be $100 or so for rear calipers and discs, so I might as well do them too to save the potential hassle. Cheers, Matt.

edit> Has anyone put BA rears onto their AU? Does anyone know if it's a straight bolt on/off jobbie or is there more to it with mounts / handbrake etc? Any knowledge would be great, thanks.

The ABS isn't actually connected to the discs or callipers at all, really. The ABS "ring" is part of the hub that the disc mounts on, and the activation of the ABS is by pulsing the calliper through the change of pressure in the brake fluid. So this setup should not affect the way your ABS works at all.

Oh - and thanks for the info. Even if freight is around $150, you've just saved me around $400 odd. Cheers.

Along the same lines as Vic's response, even the XRs/T3s that have the premium brakes (large diameter discs on the front) only use standard (but grooved/slotted) rotors on the rear. If there is a balance issue, this may be rectified by using a different master cylinder, but even then, I don't think it needs doing.

Of course, my not thinking is not the same as me knowing for sure, so if you're not sure and it worries you, then don't take the risk until you get positive advice one way or the other. I will be changing both front and rear, so hopefully that should address any potential issues.

Matt, it's supposed to be a straight swap. Mounting holes are the same (whereas on the front, they're definitely different). I may do my rears this weekend so may be able to give you a definitive answer on that next week.

FTG quote for lower control arms, uprights, stub axles and sway bar = $1000 plus freight
Aussie car recyclers (Brisbane) quote = $500 including freight.

Gee, which one should I go with?

How much?

The brisbane buyg's prices match the ones available at my local wrecker (or very close), but he has the stock and my local wrecker hardly does any AUs yet, so the answer for me was simple really. Freight was always going to be a cost, so it doesn't matter to me if it's Melb or Brissie - whoever can deliver for the better price gets my business, and Aussie Car Recyclers were great both for price, and service.

Which ones did you end up getting? BA brakes? They will fit over 16's, anything bigger will need 17's and up.

Standard BA brake will fit under 16's. The spare for an XR with standard brakes is a 16" steelie, unless optioned to a mag.

well thats strange. from the looks of it, and the consensus at the club, there is NO way, that the front calipers will fit under the fairmont 16" wheels.
