There is no need for it anywhere..after all how much does it take to use the english language as correctly as possible and we wonder about the youth of today being tomorrows leaders.

Oh no, it does'nt bear thinking about...I mean just imagine a parliament or council or big business meeting with sms talk.

I barely use SMS style talk. My mum tends to "try" and do SMS talk but it works out like the scene in Ali G: pt cr b@orez 2gev4". I was trying to save time!

well i use sms lingo in msn and sms purely because its faster less words to type...
the reason why i use it is becuase when you chating to three people or more at once they all want replys straight away........... anyways i used to use it in this forum aswell at the start purely because i didnt know the rules but since i was told not to i dont ......... and since i use it on msn an sms my fingers automatical type lingo - lol campare to laughing out loud ...........
well its got nothing to do with being uneducated its just like in the forum your not allowed and no one uses it were as msn and sms more youth orientated so they come up with ways to make things COOL so to speak........
as far as banning it in this forum doesnt bother me but i would still back the idea
cheers harris

i think all those that write in that sms type lingo in our forums should be lined up and shot.
It drives me insane trying to make sence of some of the posts on the forums, its good that after the offenders are told, they get the point pretty quickly and start to write properly so we can all understand them!

devine afg ..... i couldnt understand much of our MSN chat the other night BTW.. LOL :hihi:

I find it's easier to type properly when using a mobile phone, it takes less thinking...rather then stopping and going "hmmm how can i shorten <word>"

I hate SMS talk.

Granted, I don't speak in real life the way I type on MSN and/or on forums. It would be impossible to be so correct, well, not impossible, but very hard.

But speaking in real life and typing on forums are two different things. If I, and most people, typed the way we speak in real life, I doubt any of us would understand each other.

lol, iirc and imo are fine by me. I just ignore posts where the writer has gone out of their way to misspell and abbreviate each word in every possible way. Funny how fired up people get over this issue though.

Things such as ur, rofl, lol, omg, imho, ttfn, b4, sexc et al all originated from internet chat as it was around before text messaging and basically gave birth to the sms generation anyway

I recently got an anonymous text asking my A/S/L so it definitely goes both ways

I use it sparingly on my phone, as I have a limit of 100 characters per SMS. I don't use it here unless it is a common acronyms like LOL or IMHO.

There is a list of SMS and chat acronyms, FYI.

Ban it, i hate it, people are becoming lazy at everything, the art of expression and the correct use of the written word is something we shouldnt let go, or lower the standards of..

I just find it hard to understand. I may give it one go to work it out but then I just skip the posts that are written like that. I guess if you want to add input to the forum and be heard (or read) you need to write in a fashion that everyone can understand.

I believe it is the younger generation expressing their 'rebellious ways' to the older generations. Much as we did with our spoken language (As we had no mobiles or internet). However, having said that, I feel like a grumpy old man when I see it. Deciphering the written word from SMS style to common English is sometimes beyond me. Therefore the point that you, (SMS typists) are trying to make is lost on half the population.
Please expand your typing so I can follow what is being said!
Thanks! :

I think you either have it or not, can't say get rid of all of it..oh..keep lol imo etc. btw etc must be one of the first.I can't understand most of it,and from a couple of posts up now know what afaik means(I actually thought it was a nice way of saying something not so nice, but the context of it's placement never made any sense). It took me months to work out what pos and nos mean.I am old and the grey matter is fading and I ramble on abit, but I agree that posts littered with abbreviated text is hard to read,it may save 5 precious seconds in typing, but takes alot longer to read...and we are all on limited time...and did I mention that I ramble abit?
