I actually got pulled over for this way back in 1985. I remember it because I was looking for my first car and ended up getting fined for not displaying P plates.

I knew the law existed, but never felt the need to completely expose my entire arm out and down the side of the door. My arms aren't that long to start with. I do however rest my arm on the sill almost always. My right arm is darker than my left for doing this. I also don't like the thought of skin prints or sweat on a freshly cleaned car either.

It's because their arms are long and simian,
not like normal men and 'wimian'... With appologies to Ogden Nash... |

No air con, no fan speed, and no quarter windows to divert air in so the arm out acts as a little deflector to keep me cool. It's also pretty comfy and holds my doors shut.
I have tried the gutter grip, but you need big gutters to get comfy.

Not many gutter rails these days so their arm just slips off & they forgot to retract it! & it also says to a copper look how could I possibly be talking on a mobile phone! Plus it creates a talkin point for people that have runout of conversation

Pretty sure there is nothing wrong with sticking you arm out a window on a hot day. Just pull it up if people get a little close |

So I figure:
'Fat arming' is to hold the door shut. 'Gutter grip' is to hold the roof up. If neither of the above, to show off the tatts or the suntan. |

Coming home one day, just rounding the corner into my street. I come face to face with a guy in a white vn/vp commodore driving towards me on the wrong side of the road. The driver had his arm hanging out the window dragging chains down the road.

I'm an the occasional gutter gripper. If I have the music up I may become a roof drummer (depends on the song). People who drive with their arms in their lap holding the bottom of the steering wheel annoy me (pet hate).

Wow this surprises me reading the content of the replies.
I was talking to another youth worker about 5 years ago about different crazy stories we've experienced. One of his, which I'll never forget, was about 2 girls arriving in the middle of an event screaming. One missing a hand. What had happened was, they were driving along lateish at night just south of Oxford Falls Sydney. The passenger being a bit drunk had her arm out the window cause the car had no air-con. They were driving along when at a T intersection a car turning onto the road veered slightly onto the girls side of the road. The girl driving reacted and adjusted just enough to clip a parked cars rear view mirror (breaking theirs). The passenger began screaming because somehow the parked car and the girls car got close enough to cause the passengers hand to be torn off. The girl driving didn't know what the problem was (I assume it was dark in the car) until a few kms up the road. Which was where the youth worker was holding the event. Obviously Ambo's were called and the driver and a few other leaders went back to locate the hand... which they did in time for the Ambo. No one knows what happened after the girl and her friend were taken away. Sure its hot in a car with no A/C but through no fault of your own this can happen to anyone. I certainly wouldn't risk my hands/arms etc.

I hang my arm out the window for only two reasons - To get the chickas (negative results so far) and to give well deserved motorists the birdie.
I guess it's like having your fog lights on when there isn't a hint of fog. People do it, people hate it and they're both illegal. |

So this yuppie is driving along in his BMW convertible, hand hanging loose outside the car. A truck comes through a stop sign and t-bones him right on the driver's door. He jumps out screaming, "My car, my car, my beautiful BMW". A bystander says, "Don't worry about your car, man, look at your arm". "My rolex, my rolex, my beautful rolex".

Some funny as **** comments in here! Nothing wrong with a bit of arm action on the door trim, but hanging it out and trying to touch the bottom of the door is just not cricket

'Stunt drivers' is what I called drivers who did this back in the 80's. Back then in Newcastle, if a copper saw you do it, you would be pulled over.
Now of course anything is ok if you don't speed. Says a lot about the standard of road craft skills that many are struggling to see why it might be wrong. We need more focus on being good drivers, not just slow ones. |

Jaysus we're getting a bit pedantic now, I'm sure arms have been out when the horse and carriage was around so I doubt it is a new thing.
I own old GTs arm/elbow out is mandatory All we need is some muppet to pass a law that "any body part must not protrude past an open window"....we must be protected from ourselves. |

Sucks for bikers and all there exposed body parts. They must be morons for not being safe and sound inside a car.
Seriously who cares if people want to drive with their arm out the window. I never do it but this thread inspired me tonight driving home from work. |

I've always done this, especially recently now its getting hotter and i still havent fixed my aircon. On a side note, it really makes you appreciate the magnitude of the force that is wind resistance acting on a car at highway / country-road speeds Its quite difficult holding your open palm to the oncoming air at such speeds, imagine the force on an area the size of the front of your car
