I've kept a log of fuel quantity at each tank fill of my FG XR50 manual since delivery in Oct 2010, and 27,700 km. Dual zone climate always set on Auto at 21.5deg C. Readings recorded on an Excel spreadsheet.

Car is driven to work in the city each day, about 45km each way, mostly freeway driving and there is the daily stop-start traffic in the city and home suburb, plus the more than occasional long traffic jams on the freeway. Average speed is 65kmph. Yet to drive it on a long trip.

Actual overall average economy of 9.47 lt/100km based on fuel bowser readings. Computer shows 9.1 lt/100km which hasn't been reset for a long time, so can be considered a guide only.

I do need to be able to use the boot space with the rear seatbacks folded down, and I carry a full size alloy spare. Also less things to go wrong having only petrol, plus the better performance and response, and with the manual transmission. I just enjoy driving it the way it is, I dont mind paying a little more for that.

I get around 8.5 L/100km in my Focus. Most of my driving is done on the Monash which can vary from a clear run to stop start.

The problem is the gearing. At 110km/h in 6th gear it's doing almost 2,300rpm. At 100km/h it's more like about 2,100rpm and the economy drops to high 4's. At a steady 90km/h it's low 4's / high 3's.

I seem to recall that it's the wind resistance is squared from 80km/h Vs 120km/h thereby affecting fuel consumption directly.

i would agree. when nsw dropped their highway limits back to 100, my consumption in the car i had at the time reduced by up to 1l/100km.

its not enough to make me drive a bit slower though, just to save $30 on a 2000km trip.

my fg is 10l/100km urban (ave speed 47km/h)

and 7.9l/100km extra urban (ave speed 91kim/h) the only highway trips i've done have been with the family though, so thats 4 occupants (2 adults, 2 kids) and full to brim boot of luggage. i'd love to do a trip '1 up' with no luggage one day to see how good i could get it.

also, lpg is great round town when the price is close to 55% of petrol price, but in the smaller country towns, the gap can be as little as 30cpl, which negates a lot of the advantage. my fg is cheaper than my egas to run on the highway with the prices i see. not sure how it would compare to ecoLPi. this is based on my journey only (adel - bris up the sturt/newell etc).

You want fuel "economy"? Try this baby...

Two-up on the highway just taking it easy, 30 to maybe 35mpg (9.4 to 8ltr/100k) if ridden carefully.
Just me, riding it on the highway in a "spirited manner"...20 to 25mpg (14 to 11ltr/100km).

Riding it back and forwards to work around town, giving it a good thrashing now and then...

...maybe 15mpg (18.8ltr/100km)...and that's a 17 liter tank...

No wonder they stopped making them...it's like owning a big block V8...a badly tuned one with a fuel leak...

Has anyone ever compared the fuel economy difference when driving on a flat highway at consistent speeds of 80Kmh, 90Kmh, 100Kmh, and 110Kmh? Also does air-conditioning affect highway fuel economy much? I’m guessing that at high speeds opening the window even a bit will disturb the airflow a fair bit.

Driving my 6 speed FG I get about 13.5l – 14.0l/100km on what is mostly inner Sydney city traffic driving with a heavy foot attitude, ohh and I only ever fill up with 98 octane.

BF Fairmont n/a I6 4 speed. Averages around 12.5L/100km with mainly city driving, using 95/98RON fuel.

I thought mine was bad until I saw some of the figures you guys posted ...

7-7.5/100km in the mini JCW and I am never last from the traffic lights and always has automatic climate control on in largely short run suburban driving. Sure it may be small in size but it goes like a scolded cat, handles like a go cart and gets 700+ km from a 49l tank without running it on empty.

My last falcon, a BFI F6 used to average 11's with a 50/50 mix of highway/suburban driving.
