We were sent up the creek decades ago in the 1970's when "economic rationalisation" became the in-thing in halls of power. We were sold out by people meant to be working for us and in our best interests to transnational corporations. We are witnessing the result of their actions today with the demise of manufacturing in Australia.
Blaming the blue or the red team for our predicament is pointless, they dance to the same tune, always have, always will... |

And we don't even do drug tests. Seems a lot of people say they want to work, but based on the (lack of) effort they don't really. |

Australians no longer control their general financial status or employment because we are no longer a primary manufacturing base as we were 30 to 40 years ago. We are also supposed to have about 3 to 4 recessions in a lifetime.

At my work we just advertised an admin position that became vacant. We had to pull the job ad after 2 days because the applications came in thick and fast. 2 days and over 300 applications. And don't even get me started when we put an ad in the paper/online for a labourer...It is a full day just to go through the applications.
There are more people looking for work than 12mths ago, that is for sure.

Just out of curiosity I went for a walk earlier today through an exclusive part of the city I live in. In the 2,200 meters (according to Google maps) I counted 23 shop fronts with 'for lease' signs. Checked the same stretch of road on Google street view which shows picture date as December 2009 - a total 12 shops for lease. Would like to have see the same stretch of road in 2007 before the GFC hit.

It's just getting ridiculous... I've been fighting 4 months of red tape to get a substantial house built. I have had to revise it smaller twice now. The reasons are beyond a joke as to why we haven't started building yet and I'm seriously considering pulling the plug on the whole project. Work for a whole heap of people for the best part of a year.
Perhaps the town planner will be out of a job soon enough. Instead of trying to use common sense to keep things going they are just shooting themselves in the feet. I certainly feel for business that are continually hitting brick walls due to ridiculous red tape.

I have been looking at our forecasts for functions and people are definitely going to be spending up big this summer. Nearly 20million for September-January and that's not including room revenue, club revenue and general food and beverage revenue. What is this recession? Some industries go nuts some dont.

perhaps Wrongway, but the lima agreement was another nail in the Australian coffin, it won't matter soon anyway, our Australian constitution is now registered in the US(how did that happen?), we are slowly having our rights diminished beneath the our noses, we are becoming a puppet colony of the the UN(new world order), part of that process is to bankrupt the country, aside from gov debt, look at personal debt, look at manufacturing, what is that old saying? heading up **** creek without a paddle?

In 1973 Tarrifs were cut by a massive 25% in one hit overnight with zero warning to industry . In 1972/3 Australia recorded its last ever trade surplus , the next year we had a trade deficit of $1.5 billion and 138,000 manufacturing jobs were lost . All that took place in a 12 month period . Never in the countries history has such a momentous shift occurred before or since .

The elephant in the room is private debt at 150% of GDP.
That money has to be paid back at some point. There is no better example of dead money than interest to a financier. |

Well the majority of our revenue is rooms but the "busy time" we make the most revenue from functions. I wouldn't say that school formals (40% of functions booked) would be people drowning their sorrows, the rest are usually corporate functions so yes people are drinking a lot but it's usually in celebration. The companies that can afford to host 80-150k functions are usually full of happy employees. And then there is weddings, we do lots of those. The only people drowning sorrows there are the husbands.
I'm going to say that the hotels coastal location is the winner for us.

My nephew was driving for Wavel's Party hire through the end of year rush last year. He was working casual rates, flat out from Cup day through to Christmas, then it went dead and he was out of a job. he's hoping to get some more work with them this year to go with the other part time stuff he has managed to land. Driving jobs are few and far between at the moment in Adelaide. |

Melbourne is very quiet for construction and associated trades.
And what is out there is now at very very low margin. Overall I can tell you first hand that senior management and executive positions are not anywhere near as plentiful as 5 years ago. A very tight market indeed.
