Never mind the moisture problem from using tarps, what about all the bloody spiders it attracts, wouldn't get me near it

The funny thing is if you buy a bogged up driver for $40K the condition of the car underneath the paint and bog probably ain't much different than this and the difference in the full restoration cost is probably negligible because in both cases if the restoration is done properly EVERYTHING needs to be rebuilt, restored or replaced.

Consider this, the "supercar" scare era was still a year away and the fuel crisis was another two and ADR 76 which crippled any real power gains from a factory V8 was still another five years away as well and of course the next Generation V8 Falcon would ultimately come as a two door coupe if that took your fancy. Times were good and this was an era when it was easy to market the next model as more desirable than the last and there was no way of knowing that it would not always be like this back then. This car as far as cars go was easily replaced back in 1971 and how do we even know that the owner did not actually do this with a GTHO or 350 Monaro, just because he could? Hind sight is a wonderful thing but this car sadly was parked as a wreck in a time when you could buy a much better replacement brand new, it is as simple as that and after all, this car could easily have been a HR Holden Premier or even a Toyota Crown and if so, would anyone be bothered having the same discussion today? back in 71 when it was dumped, it was just a dirty old falcon, tucked away until "one day"

Saying a tarp traps moisture sounds like it has merit and I wouldn’t totally disregard the possibly.
But I had a Holden out in the sun under a breathable tarp for 5 years and when I took it off it was as shiny as the day I put it there with no hint or smell of damp. Maybe it depends on the type of material used? What it did become because of the cover was a home to 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Redback Spiders. . |

On a cold winters morning have a look under any patio roof. You will see bulk condensation. A tarp works much the same way.
The simple fact is that once upon a time, this car was a bomb. If you saw a smashed and stripped VX GTS nobody would care less. In 40 years time somebody will probably be whinging on a forum, as to why somebody didn't cover the $20 car with a $20 tarp. |

I really hope this car ends up with someone with the ability and passion to restore it. (and not someone thinking of doing a dodgy rebody with it).
Interesting about the ID tags missing when delivered..I haven't heard of that happening before The guy was very open and helpful with info about the car when I talked to him about it...just unfortunate that it's too far gone for me to consider |

My first thought was buy it and leave it as is under a tree on my block and slowly watch it go back to dirt. Or even plant a tree under it to end up with one of those cool cars in a tree photos.

Ha ha Too true, I've just sold a 68 XT I was doing up, the amount of stupid phone calls, questions and offers astounded me.... So I'd hate to be trying to sell a GT.

Just read the buyer's questions and it seems the seller won't lety anyone inspect the car? Says it's unfair to those thatr live far away.
WTF? While it looks OK no way i'd be buying a GT without a thorough inspection. XR GT wreck is probably worth $5K, any other XR wreck is probably worth a few hundred dollars. |

the whole issue with tarps depends on the type used. most people think of a tarp as those cheap plastic sheets you get from the $2 shop not treated canvas that breathes while protecting ( a true tarpaulin )
