I think the cheapest RWD biased suv that comes close is the CX-60 and it starts at over $60K and is smaller...X5 diesel 6cyl starts at $150K according to Carsales...so replacing a Terry for a new equiv. isn't a cheap exercise and something I research when bored....but then again our 2016 AWD Terry Tit. has now hit 60K km so I'm not in a hurry unless the lotto rep calls and passes on their congratulations. Edit: I also am ever grateful it hasn't got a dpf because my wife's drive to work and back isn't even a few kays.

Yep and I think the Jag F - Pace would ask 100K+ or so onroad and be very scarce as of component shortages, too. Realistic replacement in spec if not price.

Other points that are +'s for us, are the cab space & seating position for my crapped out back etc. The front row of most cars these days, are bordering on claustrophobic to me.
The rear is perfect for chaff bags or whatever etc & with the rear seat down will swallow large pieces of furniture etc.
My Mastiff has space in the rear & his greasy head doesnt reach & soil the head-lining.
Easy enough to maintain myself!

Has only been into a work-shop once, where they diagnosed & replaced an injector.

Prefer our SZ over the earlier model.
Feels way better on the road for mine.
And this Barra is a rocket compared to the previous one.
I think its the RWD over AWD too that I prefer, but its the missus' car anyway so shes putting most of the k's on the thing

The Territory sold well for Ford. It was smart engineering leveraging the Falcon.

The Toyota Kluger would be another option to the Territory. Roughly same size with a six, 2wd and Awd.

I believe it's dropped the V6 and is only a turbo 4cyl 2.4L or 2.5L hybrid with a a CVT for the hybrid...plus still a FWD-biased powertrain....there's also the Mazda's bigger brother, CX-90 which is a RWD /awd and that starts at well over $70K

The Kluger at the time was a PoS and new for new the Territory was much better.

I have no idea how people are driving these cars to get >16L/100....stop start traffic and all.

Driven normally they should be sitting on a mixed 15L/100..higher than that and you're either a mountain goat or towing something.

SO many minor components let it down, the guts of it is great.

The latest gen Kluger has no six plus a fwd, I didn't realise. I was originally thinking older gen with the 3.5 v6 as a substitute for a Territory.

Definitely, the Barra 195 in our son's 2011 XR6 is a noticeable improvement driving-wise on the Barra 190.

The Kluger at the same time as the first Territories was a much smaller car, too.

It was only after posting I remembered a few years ago while staying at Majenta Beach (NSW) after Christmas that I hired a Kluger from Sydney Airport and so 4 up including me and all our luggage. As soon as I got out on the main roads it struck me immediately the steering difference and tightness of the Kluger, as in it really surprised me.... it had loose steering and floated like a boat, with just on 3500km..it was my first drive in a long time of another SUV other than our Territory and showed up in a matter of minutes the superior driving dynamics the Terry had...once on the highway then on some lower quality, winding roads that superiority only went up a notch or two....ironically I was given the option of an X5 or the Kluger back at Sydney Airport and it was the first time I ever took the cheaper option, mainly because the X5 needed another half hour to be cleaned and the tribe was restless..

Having just upgraded to a bi turbo ua2 Everest I can no longer agree with that statement.

Having said that, driving experience is subjective so I accept others might still prefer the feeling of a Territory. I'm showing my age with the whole lack of care around the power and torque thing as well. I only need to keep up with traffic. Any car (within reason) will do that easily.

The 2.0/10sp combo is significantly better than the 2.7/6sp.

In terms of what now rules the segment, the baton has been passed on to the RAV4, and the desirability weighted in favour of the hybrid.

It's a bit smaller, has the desired tech and remote opening boot in some, it's kind of in the price point of where the Territory was (saw 57K advertised onroad for a mid spec XSE so that's late Titanium money!). It is said to be a good handler by the reviewers, and has a (kind of) AWD option - check Driving Sports TV testing it out, the rear has an electric motor and it has it's moments... Sales are hindered by a lack of supply so it's hard to get (treat em mean and keep em keen). It does sub 5L/100km which addresses the main Territory gripe.

Been checking out a few SZII petrol RWD Territories as the replacement for the AWD SY and, um, it seems a different car entirely. We got the feel of sitting up higher, and after the initial delight at the light wheel noticed being far more detached from the road, roundabouts and corners with the EPAS; and the Barra in it has either adapted or been programmed to drop into a higher gear earlier, so it goes there and then chugs... This is very different to sons Barra 195... is this just how it's adjusted to previous drivers AFF gurus? Just a glance from the new to the old SY and I could swear the SY wheels look cambered and the sheer control and joy turning that in on corners and roundabouts still sets the benchmark.

The Mrs liked the connectivity, but found the beeping forward and reverse sensors annoying as they went on with nothing there to set them off. She found the corners far better in our one.

We thought it extraordinary that the earlier car performed in a more competent way dynamically.

A bit of reflection & sadness gave way to gratitude that we got to order from factory brand new something that has not seen it's strengths bested at it's price point, at the time of writing.

So, with that in mind, a good SZII petrol with the Barra is still a solid value buy, so long as I realise that it won't be the same car as the AWD SY. Genuinely shocked as I did not expect this.

Very much so,

I don't particularly like how Thailand Special based vehicles stop/steer/turn/ride or go, but my daily is a tuned WZ Fiesta ST

I suggest the Barra SZ Territory for anyone looking for a first car, they've got some problems but you can get parts for them from the local milkbar, they're cheap to maintain at a cost of being a bit thirsty but at the end of the day when it comes to cars, fuel is the cheapest thing you buy for them. Service items cost SFA, and there's no skill issue at workshops in fixing or maintaining them, everyone has worked on a zillion Territorys.

One of the young kids I met at TAFE bought one on my advice, loved it, recently totalled it a few weeks ago, he's asking me for advice on another car and I've pointed him towards the SZ Territory again, found one with roof racks he can tie a ladder down to as a bonus

He's an apprentice electrician,

Basically:

- FG/FGII Falcon ute
- BF/BF MKIII Falcon wagon
- SZ Territory (bonus with roof racks if you can find one)

Are my suggestions for the TAFE kids and their first cars, the first is the MVP option for an apprentice, particularly EcoLPI ones around Melbourne but they generally have higher kilometers and are a bit halal in the budget these kids tend to have, so its harder to find a good one. There seems to be plenty of Barra SZ Territory around in povvo spec in their budgets, with low kilometers and good condition as its a bit undesirable being an unleaded SUV.

While most won't notice, the rwd-bias of Territory doesn't get matched by any of the Koreans that have a fwd-biased platform.
In heavy towing also, a rwd biased vehicle is superior in almost all situations.

I learnt that the hard way once, gravel road, fully loaded van and fully loaded trailer, crossed a single lane bridge slowly and had no grip from the front wheels going up the incline...they just spun and chewed themselves up and had to be dragged up by a farmer...
edit..forgot to say it was a 2007 T5 Transporter.

Buying a Territory and having the interior covered in fine nappa leather and installing the best sound system with modern tech will end up way cheaper than buying anything new that comes close. Not to mention the actually negligible cost of diff bushes and a transmission cooler.

And you will have plenty of $ left over for the not-actually-that-outrageous fuel bills. Remember, the Barra uses the cheaper fuel.

Thing is, utes are dead, and Falcon ute sellers know this and price accordingly. SUVs are still common, despite them costing more, offering less and using an antiquated type of fuel - so a bargain Tezza is more likely. Just make sure you get the unleaded one.

This. Ours is now 17 and up for a bit of restorative love on paint and rust areas, might as well re do the bushes back to original rubber, get a full detail and make her sparkle. It still runs and tracks so straight and true and never crashed. And while that's done, grab a low km AWD petrol Terry to run around in, they are peanuts. All this is going to be far more value for money than trying to find the same mechanical/handling/ride abilities in the new car market. In the meantime if the snow beckons, I just know that AWD will be superb on the alpine roads, and that the petrol won't freeze in the lines like the diesels do at -10 and beyond. And yes, it has gone there despite the BOM's instruments going on strike when it got colder than they liked!
