Yes let’s just continue on this blind saving everyone mission, FFS where does it stop?
because a FEW and it is a FEW compared to the greater driving majority try and reach the end of the Speedo all of a sudden everyone falls into this category and must only have a Speedo that says 110 because surely that will save lives *cough*. idiots will wipe themselves out regardless of what manufactures do to stop it, and lets face it, if everyone in the world survived for 80 years and no one died then it would be an over populated SH****house, when you drive you drive with the intention everyone around you will kill you, its called defensive driving, yes idiots every now and then will kill someone, but that same someone could also be just blindly going about driving with no idea of what is going on around them and not giving them the best surviving chance so it goes both ways regardless of if you like it or not. Speedos are there to indicate speed, and regardless of if it reads 130 or 230 hell even 330 should make no difference. back to being OT, FPV have as has been noted earlier done a system of 2km increments up to 100 then 5km there after, much better idea, same as BMW with nice clear legible numbers and the 40/50/60/80/100 in bigger numbers so it makes it easy at a glance to see what’s going on, many more manufactures should pick up on this.

You are all a pack of girl's blouses. Try reading the kilometers per hour reading on an an XB speedometer.

The original post (may I suggest you go back and read it) was more about having difficulty reading legal speeds on your speedo because of the excessive top figure displayed on the speedo... Nothing about acceleration, exhausts, driving a prius, or banning race tracks (all of which were suggested by you)... there was nothing said about people trying to get 'off the clock', nor would speedos with reduced speeds be implemented to save lives.... The only relevant thing you've said this whole thread is: Quote:
So slow down, re-read the thread, and there will be no need for the hype...

ok seems such a trivial thing has got some people rather heated - firstly I believe that having a speedometer that reads a little above the fastest legal limit of 110 - say max speedo reading of 130 is a bit excessive, I feel a more logical approach would be a rule of 3rds max legal speed 110 1/3rd of 110 is 36.667 so we round up to 40 - 110 + 40 == 150 and if we when we implement this have trouble with ratios or the like this may creep to 160-170 which is still a fair slab away from the 280 on the focus. This would mean that for the same size gauge the increments in speed can be finer and further spread out increasing accuracy of the gage and increasing readability of it - the alternative is goto 280 like the focus and increase the size of the gage radius by around a third to get the same accuracy improvement as reducing the top number.
I also agree that making speedos more easily read as the increments are so painfully close together makes it very easy to do a 2-3 kmh over the limit and get some paperwork in the mail so they will never legislate for more accurate speedos. another trick with GPS is you can set it to "warn" on speeding or something not 100% fool proof cause limits change for roadworks or just for the heck of it on occasion, but having a GPS saying "check speed" once every 2 seconds is almost as annoying as your partner doing the same thing from the passenger seat.

I quite like the solution of used in the Lexus LFA with the full digital LCD display. Though I do see a future of 'dowloadable' displays in a market similar to ringtones in the future for that sort of thing. "I'm sorry officer, I couldn't read the display properly because my Hannah Montanna theme on my speedo isn't very clear"

If we had some high speed Autobahns we wouldn't have this problem :
Seriously though, a stock non turbo Astra will never hit 240kph so Holden should calm down a bit. |

The Doc special ordered an import version from local dealer to allow time travel, pure genius!
I'd say colour LCD screens with optional graphics of analog or digital would be the go. +1 for silly themes on them. Porn would be big as always, imagine that. Two big round full... circles for the speed and tacho...lol!

Can't actually, speed limited electronically to 235 km/h, so therefore even an XR8 does not need a speedo to 260. Maybe Ford are just as guilty for putting big numbers as brag factor when the car is not capable of that speed.

Check out Jap imports of the 90s, all limited to 206Kw and I think still today are limited to 180km/h, the aussie delivered version of the 300ZX has a 260km/h speedo where the Jap import (both NA and TT) has 180km/h and is speed limited to it, whereas the aussie one (NA) will go to 240 before it really starts struggling. Here's the speedo on my Fiesta (No I'm not actually doing 220km/h, its on test mode), the only thing I don't like about it how it doesn't have little "notches" to indicate 2km/h like most other ones do. http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/2617/29122009.jpg I was looking at a wheels test and it says the max speed it can do in 4th and 5th is 185km/h, so it must be speed limited. |

Ouch, it would be easy to go over by a couple of km's in a school zone with your speedo.
