good work guys!

I passed all mine too, but I think I got bumped up with engineering maths, got a 50 LOL!

I dont care, although its a bit of a hollow victory, either way that class has a huge failure rate some I am happy with that!

What he said ^
Uni is far from cheap, unless you have rich parents you're stuck with paying out a ****load of money for your education for quite awhile.

Woo! Go HECS!! I think Im up to $13.5K now.

Its not that bad, you dont pay it back until you earn over a certain amount and the interest isnt bad.

Does anyone know what the repayment rate is?

Depends on your income mate - sliding scale kind of thing. They change it year to year as well as part of the budget.

05-06 (i.e. what you'll pay for the year just ended)

Below $36,185

$36,185–$40,306

HRI is the "hecs repayment income"... bascially your taxable income with a couple of adjustments.

Going forward into 06-07

I finished uni with about $18,000 debt. I'm expecting it to take 2 or 3 more years to pay off and ive only been out of uni for 3 years now - it's quite a large repayment each pay period (about $100 fortnight for me) so it doesnt take as long to pay off as you may think.

James - they're some solid grades mate. Keep that up and you'll walk away with a strong GPA (that is, if you kids still do the GPA thing these days?)

i believe if you leave the country and never come back the repayment rate is NIL!!!
Yeah, i wouldnt want to do that but hey i can dream....

Goin back next week, i got a distinctions across all 4 of my law and business subjects.

5 big subjects this semester though because they revised the Griffith Law structure and buggered up everything i had already planned out for each semester.

Mine is $11K after 2.5 yrs, still got 3.5 yrs to go... (did 1 yr business, then swapped to 5 yr combined law degree...)

Thanks for that mate.

I'd be in the 4% bracket at the moment. Any ideas if it is still repayable while still completing the degree? I havent made any repayments yet. Something I should ask HR I guess.

Yes. I found myself in a situation where i was studying full time and having HECS repayments deducted from my income. All i had to do was give my employer my TFN and they knew that HECS repayements needed to be taken from my pay... but you may need to "remind" your HR people to do so.

My guestimate for HECS repayment for FY just ended is around $3500. Bit of a kick in the guts on top of 30% tax, medicare, medicare surcharge etc but it's good to know i'll have my debt to the commonwealth cleared within a few years.

Prob worth noting fringe benefits and losses on rental properties are added to your taxable income to get your hecs repayment income... I assume so you cant negatively gear yourself out of repaying it lol.

GCFC is correct - you dont repay it if you go overseas and earn money in someone else's country.

Live the dream, if I can and depending on how things are at the time thats my plan, earn $$ overseas then come back with a favourable exchange rate for once.

I think I am in somewhere near $18k, I just ignore it now...lol...it will go away.

Second year Wine marketing and i managed to pass all four of my subjects this time round, after a 50% fail rate last year, one was a repeat, the rest were 2nd year subjects. Gotta agree with those that say open book exams are harder than closed, i hate open book exams

My HECS will be up around the 50k mark by the time I finish in 2008. What happened to the good old days of free tertiary education?

I love my HECS debt. Especially now that I'm not working in the field I studied!

Congrats to all those who did well this semester - I ended up with a 5 and a 6 (Credit and Distinction), two more subjects to go.

For those who didn't fulfil all their hopes and dreams, remember a simple phrase that got me through the last 5 years: Threes get degrees!

Edit: Noticed discussion of GPA's on the previous page. My only claim to fame at uni is that my GPA was actually 4.001 until the middle of last year - the lowest GPA possible without failing totally.

Bachelor of Law at Latrobe Bundoora (Melbourne)

Fairly slack semester, but managed to get credits for all my law subjects, and a pass for marketing. Must have done awfully in that exam, didn't do too badly otherwise.

Congrats to all who did well (and passed!), roll on S2. And the christmas holidays.

Edit: Ahh, I spelt Bundoora wrong the first time...

just to make sure that jim1606 doesnt think we have twelve year olds going to uni...

we go to high school till around 17yrs old (depending on which state) which is Grade 12.

(Preschool-4yrs, Primary School-5-12yrs, High School-13-17yrs or around about...differs from state to state slightly, but in the end at around 17-18yrs old you finish school then if you choose to you apply for uni...)

each state/territory has their own level of government and at the state level they control emergency services, health, education... that is why it differs from state to state.
