Usually don't need to go that far - just watch what is happening around you as you walk up to the ATM. If anyone is hanging around or shadowing you, keep walking, drive to another ATM. Perhaps say loudly, "I forgot my ATM card again" as you reach the ATM, then walk away - with the intention of the shady character hearing it. Anyone waiting to jump you will see no point as you have no cash.

Act first talk later, sounds wrong but if some looser said that to me he would have been on the ground before I said anything, that's just me though, gotta be straight to the point

Mate!
I was in Urangan most of the morning at the smash repairs, was gonna pop over to the shops there to get some juice. Should of gone!

Flappist is right, Urangan is home to most of Hervey Bay's gene pool mishaps.
I once had to drop off a member of the Rebels at his house there
That guy was a nut job, in fact, fits the discription of the bloke who tried to mug you haha!

My mate was at castle plaza getting money around 12am on a Sunday and two guys tried to mug him. He looked up after getting $50 out and one of them had a knife to his throat demanding cash. He pushed the knife away whilst grabbing the blokes neck with the other, forced him to the ground and face into the pavement, all the while bending his wrist so ge drops the knife. The other guy tried to hit him so he just lifted the other guy off the ground and let him cop the punch. Gave them
both a quick punch and told them to smarten up. He was a tae kwon do black belt and didn't cop any kind of crap from anyone!

Perhaps, but you're only saying that because he walked away unscathed.
What if he had a knife or a gun on him and was mentally unstable, and not afraid to kill people to get a few dollars?

At some times, it is simply best to just give up when they want. Sure, it sucks, but better to lose money than a kidney, an eye or your life...

Sorry to be the party pooper...

They could also just take your money and then shoot or stab you, I won't go down with out a fight but at the same time I am fairly smart about when and where I get cash out.

Pfft. That's for smart people.
Id much rather people stood up for themselves and made awesome, witty 1 liners.
As long as they know how to defend them selves that is.
I'm luckily yet to even use my martial arts in the street, never been in a fight outside of the club, and being a teenager going out to the club and parties all the time, i've been started pretty often, i just walk away all the time.
Not worth the sore hand in the morning
Need those to eat and work!

My brother headbutted him so hard he dropped to the ground and his eyes glazed over. He turned to the other guy and said "you want to try your luck?". The guy just let him walk away. I was laughing so hard, they acted so tough then folded like paper!

Similar happened to me one Friday night in Kallangur back in 2002 - got a few hundred out at the local Westpac ATM and turned around and got bailed up by 2 "oxygen theives" and one took the swing at me and broke one of my teeth and split the lip and I got a few good hits in and one of the ones I connected with caved his head in on the pavers on the way down and his mate done the bolt.
After 3 years and a few court cases I was let off with self defence - it almost cost me my job my freedom and my marriage and a few thousand in costs
Lucky there was CCTV from a nearby shop as the ATM had no camera and a few persons that seen it in the progress, but they in his defence did not want to use it, I had 110% co operation and backing from the police as he and his family was "very well known" to them
His "free laywer from the free grub pile" stated that I should of just given in and not fought back as he was in HARDSHIP - mind you I was 31 and he was 19 - I was 110kg and he was about 65kg and that was brought up many times that I overpowered him and it was not necessary
I actually think he walked ayay from it with nothing

That's cool...I mean as a general rule, and not to you in particular...

If people have the skills to defend themselves then using proper judgement, it can happen...

It is a case by case thing, but in general, people really must be careful.

you'd be surprised at what you can do even if u get shot or stabbed, 9 times out of 10 unless its a killshot u won't feel it. especially in a situation like that ur heart and adrenaline is already pumping. you'd have the guy on the ground beating the crap out of him before u even knew u were shot or stabbed plus it looks better if u have injuries and killed the guy in the process

my old man used to do a lil fighting back in Croatia he was one of the tuffest guys u would ever meet, he was the town tuff crunt, unfortunately one day he only brought his fists to a knife fight. he got sliced from the belly button to the middle of his back his intestines were hanging out he chased the guy for 500m holding his gut in, stabbed the guy in the shoulder blade and broke the blade off in him.

Sounds like the guy may be facing the music already if he was grabbed by security after trying it on with the younger couple. It may pay to speak to the shopping centre security to see if it went to the police and follow it up from there.

About 12 or 13 years ago I was walking towards my work , coming up to an ATM that an elderly lady was using. As soon as she had taken the cash out an indigenous girl, who I'd spotted eying her off, ran past, swiped the cash and her bag whilst knocking her to the ground. Not too sure what I was thinking, but I ran straight after her across 6 lanes of traffic and tripped her about 10m past the road. I grabbed the bag and she wouldn't let it go, screaming "HELP! I'M BEING ROBBED! HELLLLLP!" I'm not one to hit girls, but with this one I came mighty close. She was trying to get up and pull the bag off me, but I kept pushing her back to the ground, threatening to kick her head in if she didn't let go of this lady's bag. By the time she let the bag go the lady had made it across the road in tears, screaming at this peice of *****. Once I let the little cow up she started threatening me with her family. I pointed to our workshop and told her that's where they'll find me all day. Needless to say, no-one showed up.

As for the lady, she was so thankful. She kept offering me money but I wouldn't take it, explaining that I had enough money and her thanks is enough. I walked her back to her car and she burst out crying, telling me I was an angel. Hahaha. If only she really knew me! But a couple of days later when I had a day off she dropped off some flowers and a thank you card for me at my work.

Im no fighter but i was not scared as he never left the bench he was sitting on so a bit hard to explain bashing him if and when it went to court as all camera's would show is big bloke walk away from atm and attacking some stranger who was sitting on wooden bench helpless.
NOT A GOOD LOOK
funny thing is i thought id panic in a situation like this yet i felt calm and in control the whole time. weird

* and a man who cannot see or stand cannot fight.
My incident occurred when I was only 19/20 yrs old. Fit, strong and could move very quickly. Nowadays, 20 odd years on, sparring with my 14yr old who is into martial arts also, you can see things coming, the mind says "get out of the way idiot!", the body asks "What! Now?", to which the mind says "forget it lad. Brace yourself. This is going to hurt."
I prefer the laid back life now as the body and joints hurt to much due to to much abuse and hard work earlier in life.

Just reading what others have to say and their ordeal, just goes to show society has been going to hell in a handbag for a hell of a long while. Still, good to see there are still some good people out there who are prepared to say "No", I will not accept this behaviour. Good on you all for making a stand.
