Doesn't have to be a big city either and it's not new - Growing up in Wellingtin NZ in the late 70's, early 80's these sorts of things gang bashings were a regularly Friday/Saturday night occurance

I'd feel more safer walking down George St, Sydney at 3am on a Saturday morning than I would walking down Queen St, Auckland or Lambton Quay in Wellington

Yes tassie is not what people expect it to be. It's a hole unless your out of town a bit. To many drugs, drinking ect as there is not much else to do for some.

Agreed with post above- don't let him take the bands off! I would imagine the reason he has to wear them for 6 weeks is because he didnt have any plates put into his jaw (or if he did, it was a complex enough break to mean the plates will be ineffective for a while). In other words, those bands are what is holding his jaw together. I had my jaw broken (willingly, reconstructive surgery) nearly 4 months ago- I was only banded up for 2 days with no reprieve (and then could take the bands on and off for another 2 weeks), but I can definitely sympathise. Invest in a good blender straight away, it will be a godsend. Nearly anything can go through a blender too with enough liquid! There are plenty of other forums and sites out there with food suggestions, but my favourites were-

- 2 minute noodles blended
- chicken and sweet corn soup from the local Chinese takeaway blended
- spag Bol sauce blended

There may also be a gap between hate back of his teeth and the side of his mouth that may be big enough to get some "textured food" (ie not blended to a paste) through. Invest in some wide ended medical syringes too- godsend for not only any liquid meds you have to take (which tend to taste horrible), but eating like that is tiring, and they make it a lot easier.

Hoping the 6 weeks goes by quickly, once it's over like others said going to see a specialist is a good idea, as some emergency repairs can cause TMJ problems down the line. My surgeon often gets cases to fix up from across (and he has had a few overseas cases too!), so of you want details and are willing to travel to Newcastle PM me. Best wishes to your brother though

I didn't say it was new mate, I just said similar gang-related attacks are becoming more common. Ask any cop this, and they will confirm it for you.

Unfortunately the only person sanctioned by society to use legal force- the police- can't be everywhere all the time. Or maybe that is fortunately, depends where you stand.

Really the only thing that could combat this is to strike the fear of god into attackers: change legislation so we can carry weapons with the reasoning of self defense.

sorry to hear mate about your brother dont worry people are just f###ed as long as he recovers mate. i was driveing home from work and i got attacked by some car jackers long story short i got stabbed 7 times and i drove my self to the cop shop.

I see you are in Victoria. Did you have a minimum limit you needed to reach for your claim? I'm assuming you claimed for more as well?

I'm asking due to the fact that I get a letter for my claim stating I didn't have enough to reach the $7500 minimum......

1st of all, I would like you to ring up Accurrent Affair & tell your brothers story! Who knows you might even get paid for it!

The more people that highlight the problem the better chance we have of fixing the problem & the media seems the best way to do it!

As public citizens we deserve the right to feel safe & should demand what the Government & the head of police are going to do about it, as this is happening more offen! In my suburb a week ago too, where a group of youths beat up a man with fence pailings & metal bars!

You cannot blaim the police as they just don`t have the resources, but if we complain as a communitty or nation the government have to act on it!

Great input. There is every chance that falcmans brother did nothing to antagonize these people, just like in my situation. The guy who busted my jaw was known for taking drugs and going into rages, and mine was a case of I did nothing and still copped it. Sometimes there isn't two sides, just one angry fool and a poor victim.

Sorry to hear about your brother . Its seems these assaults get worse by the day , the culprits are rarely caught and when they are nothing is done to deter them or anyone else from doing it again , so this type of thing continues.
