I would steer well clear. The Duratec 3.0L is a bulletproof engine, the CD4E transmission however (used in the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute) is a piece of crap. If you do a google search you'll see what I mean.

Thats all right because all Duratec Taurus which means all the Oz delivered Taurus have the AX4N transaxle which was the better unit of all transaxles fitted to this model.

While I do generally agree with that, the ironic thing in our case is that at 260,000km the engine let go and the auto was, and always was, faultless!

Buy the Laser...it's a Mazda underneath and you know that means it won't break you financially.

I would never recommend that *anyone* buy a 23-year-old car. Used cars with airbags and ABS are now cheap and common enough that there's no reason to get one without those features.

Yes there is, it is for simplicity and maintenance.

Modern complicated cars are basically a throw away when any major component breaks. While some people don't mind this, myself included, I pick them up cheap and drive them until something worth lots breaks...

Others can't afford the outlay every time, and a simple cheap car is what is best. There is an old Gemini in our family that is kept going for about $50 a year. Everyone's situation is different.
