very easy to get out on the track.

Basicly no overtaking in corners, only pass on straights, no distance rules etc just common sense, if you're uncomfortable with the car behind you, wave them past. i had 2 or 2 cars spin out infront of me, had no issues with pulling car up or avoiding them.

main straight i seen near 140 in my car, i think Shauno (EL with cat back) seen similar speeds. no drifting, i got a little sideways leaving a few corners. i seen a few commodores get black flagged for too much sideways. sideways in moderation (no showing off) seemed to be the theme.

The answers above pretty much sum up how it all works.

Any form of drifting is not allowed, we came down pretty hard in the afternoon when it was obvious some people were getting a bit too silly.

can street cars of any sort join in when it's a drift day(is there non comp drift days?), or do you have to be in a car club, and have a drift car? etc?

There was a drift day on Saturday at winton.

Theres drift days at both winton and calder. Winton im fairly sure is organised by Vicdrift and Calder practice nights are on Wednesday but now ran by calder management.

Winton i beleive have both comp days (beginner and advanced sections) as well as days designated as practice days.

Calder has practice nights one wednesday night a month or something like that but apparently they just put up tyre barriers around heaps of corners now so be ready for a bit of carnage or bumpers being ripped off because theres no run-off.

Both welcome all sorts of makes, but of course jap cars dominate the scene.

Best to check http://www.vicdrift.com/web/ or www.nissansilvia.com (the Victorian, Events & Drift Talk forums) for more info.

Sounded a bit optimistic to me.

Most performance cars ie HSV, GT, WRX don't even hit 170 km/h down the front straight of Winton. The Porsche 911 Carrerra S reaches 188 km/h.

That is why you use the tacho reading, gear ratio, diff ratio and tyre diameter to calculate your speed.

If you are talking about the Porsches that Jim Richards races then they do round about the same lap times as a V8 supercar and a Supercar will hit 220-240 on the Winton main straight.

Might be a good idea to practice heel-toeing and countersteering before hitting the track again - defensive driving courses are great at teaching you how to control a sliding car - wether its understeer or oversteer you are trying to manage.

There seems to have been a big speed difference in cars on the day. Were cars grouped with others who were circulating at similar lap times, or was it a free for all?

I know I would have been nervous mixing it with cars that could only manage 140 km/h down the front straight, as I would have been bearing down on them a hell of a lot faster.

free for all, and i didnt feel at ALL nervous about cars going a lot quicker then me.
my car is far from quick (near stock performance times)
had turbo cars whiping past me in the striaghts (no overtaking in corners)
and it was all good.

very comfortable out there and it was only my first time.

How did the drivers of the faster cars feel? Any idea of laptimes?

If you watch your mirrors a lot you won't have a problem with faster cars, just stick left.

I would be one of the faster car (in a straight line anyway). I'm more interested if any of the faster cars were having any trouble with the slower cars.

Not as far as I know, but the onus is on the faster cars to look out for the slower cars.
