Ohhhhhh what a gem of a thread..... The dialects run free.

I have these "debates" with my wife, on how to say words. Purely because I have an Aussie accent and she, the Upstate NY accent.

For the record, I pronounce it "Bathust" with the "thust" said quickly.
And I've just bought my campsites for the great race too. So there... :P

Look at how they pronouse AUSTAR!

Going by the adds on TV..... AUS STAR..... when it should read AUST AR ?

We have a small town up the ranges near Mareeba... called Ravenshoe.
Pronounced " Ravens...hoe "
Yet people who arent locals often call it... Ravens shoe!
Always brings up a laugh.

However the way our family pronounce our name is as described below...

Ba-thurst.

The funny thing is when you tell someone your name and they proceed to spell it with two Hs, or put it down as the town you are from.

Please inform your wife that seeing as she's a Seppo American she has no say in the matter as they don't speak English there. (I mean some of them pronounce Jaguar. Jag-wire!!)

Creswick in Victoria. I think the W should be silent. In London UK, Chiswick is pronounced "Chisick"

Melbourne was named after a British Prime Minister http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William...ount_Melbourne

They pronounce it Mel Born. We say Mel Burn.

There is a place in the uk called Loughborough.
It is pronounced Luff boro. An Australian tourist was heard calling it "Luga boro".
