I'd bet my left nut if you applied for a position as a Trades Assistant with any mining mob, with your experience they'd put you on, and if you could prove you were doing the same job as a tradesman they'd pay you tradesmans rates.
Don't just assume that all the money is in the mining sector either, there's some good money to be made in construction. There's a couple of jobs gearing up in the Pilbara that I know of that are having trouble with labour..... |

OK, some good news... I got a bit frustrated looking for mining jobs... Getting no reply from many places was pretty confusing On top of that my wife told me I was going to be a dad... Again This made me feel uneasy about going to work away from home for weeks at a time, due to my wife having previously suffrered from Post Natal Depression Still wanting to change jobs I had my resume done professionally by a friend of a friend she is also a life coach... and after sitting down with her and having a good chat I decided to give job hunting a rest... just figured it wasn't the right time yet weeks went by and I spent all my spare time clearing out the clutter that had accumulated around the house plus finishing off some of the renovation projects that I'd started... then 3 weeks ago I went to work on the last day of my working week (I have a 1pm start... ) and after only an hour or so and I really didn't want to be there.... So I rang the missus and she loaded up the kids (after they had had their dinner) into the wagon and came and picked me up it was around 4pm on the way home I detoured through Dandenong South and stopped at a place that I passed many times over the last few years... they have a lot of large earthmoving machinery parked on display along the side of the premises I grabbed my daughter out of the car and walked up to the office but the doors were locked and no-one was in there... as i turned around to walk back to the car several people were leaving the opposing building (mechanical workshop) the last person to walk out stopped me and asked if he could help I explained that I hadn't finished my apprenticeship and we chatted for a few minutes and then he asked if i was just looking for 3 months to finish the apprenticeship or if i was after some full time work... next thing i know I'm dropping off my resume he gave me his card, and i checked out the company website and then pestered this guy every couple of days (he is the workshop manager) the story from him was that there was allowance in the budget for 9 employees... currently there was only 7... last week i dropped in and the news wasn't good... I was dissapointed because they work on the big construction/mining stuff and i told him where i work now pays well for the minimal hours i do.. so i could work there part time to make up the money we needed to survive each week... explaining to him that it was the experience they could provide me with was what i was interested in most well that had me back in with a chance again.. and he said hed contact me that night... but he didn't and everything went cold again so friday last week i rang one more time... got his answering machine.. left a message.. then let it go.... then i got stuck into decluttering around the house again sent the wife and kids away to mums so i could really get stuck into it wednesday i got to work for my last day of the week again... and my immediate boss walks up to me and tells me he has some good news he had been contacted for a reference... 40 mins later a message is left on my phone with an offer of employment : just have to do the pre employment medical, then start ASAP they have numerous places within Australia that you can be sent to when needed And best of all they are an International Company CANADA USA, UK, INDONESIA and several other countries pretty gobsmacked really... half way between where i work now and home too... nice and close ! So i can get up to speed in the trade again and stay close to home and help with the kids... maybe in a few years when then kids are older we'll be able to try the mining jobs again with more success ;) |

A fellow friend just left work to go west, earning around the 150K mark. But it's not much of a social life. No facebook or Myspace, or much of AFF. It's ....Wake up, eat, drive, work 12 hours, drive, eat, shower, bed, Wake up........ It's something that you have to "mentally" get used to. No time to go cruising in the Ford during work days. That's why they give you 2 weeks off in sucession(varies in off days) That's why people whop want to work in that type of job, only do it for the $$$$ and then off. I think the turnaround is about 6-12 months for most jobs. Last edited by fordel; 29-09-2008 at 11:30 AM. Reason: Removed name of company as requested by thread starter |

^ Yep mate that's what i do, 4-1 with 2 on Site RDO's, i only do 10 hour day's thou currently on a Pilbara Iron site, I don't mind it but like ya say you have no social life, but if ya can get over that it fairly good up there.
Safty is the other thing ya got to deal with. You got Worksafe but then you got BHP/Rio "IronSafe" that just takes it to a hole new level you just about need a permit to take a P*** LOL

My roster is 13 on 1 off, 13 on, 5 off, 12 hr days, I work for a civil construction company in the mining town of Roxby Downs, 15km's from BHP Olympic Dam mine site in South Australia. Olympic Dam in a few years time will be the biggest open cut mine in the world. I dont even work in the mine and I do a hardcore roster and get paid bucketloads..... A lot of money in construction.

to me it sounds like your trying to get a job as a tradesman . you have an impressive resume" , but no employment history . as a tradesman. get in there as an operator . if i was an employer i probably wouldnt consider you as a tradesman . and would take someone who was in a workshop for 10 years 1st.
so i say , get in as an operator . then go for a tradies job after your in . good luck. |

to get in any mine in WA first you'll need a MARCSTA ticket.
http://www.marcsta.com/content/gener...dquestions.asp Next you will want to look at companies like Monodelphous, Rio Tinto, WMC (Western Mining) http://www.monadelphous.com.au/ They are in the oil and gas production. www.RioTinto.com/Careers www.westernmining.com There is also CAT and Thiess that are in the industry. www.thiess.com.au Then there are the thousands of employment agencies that will get you in the door. Red Dirt are specialising in the mining industry and are all over the radio here in WA. http://www.reddirt.com.au/ Check out The West Australian newspaper online for jobs too. www.thewest.com.au Hays Personell www.hays.com.au Skiilled Engineering www.skilled.com.au There are heaps. Just need to use google Hope this helps

this might be off topic, but dont forget you work very long hours in a mine, usually. my neighbour across the road gets picked at 5pm and dropped off at 7 am when he is on nightshift and vice versa for dayshift. i would be stuffed after a week of that
