Of course you can overcome that problem. The process is call 'photosynthesis'. Corn-derived ethanol is energy negative because corn is a terrible, destructive, irrigation-intensive nightmare crop. Cane-derived ethanol is significantly energy positive. The only reason to use corn is bad politics.

Which is why in the US, ethanol is corn based, and in Oz, most of ours is cane based. You could say we cane the Yanks when it comes to ethanol production......

The reason there is gum in fuel system??
Ethanol cleans the lines from varnish etc built up from ULP fuels...
I've pulled a turbo 6 cyl race engine down many times running E85 ..
The valves etc are as clean as the day it was assembled..

Most Euro Fords don't like E10...
I didn't think it was the Ethanol that did the claening, I though additioonal cleaning agents were added due to the negative effects Ethonal has on the fuel system?

If you drive a bit enthusiastically I find economy in a few cars i have driven to be not just 10% worse but more like 30% worse for the same speed.

Remember NEVER use it in your boat or plane...

So what are you going to use when it runs out ???
An old engine tuned to run on it runs better than unleaded...
Richer mixture and a little more advance as it's slower burning than ULP...
Which is why in some cases engines hesitate when there's no load..
This can be tuned out tho... Yes consumption does go up a little...
But I'd rather see rich Aussies than rich Arabs...

Yep ethanol does clean.. It also mixes with water if there's any in the tank!
Which is bad news on boats and planes where there's heaps of condensation...

Hi. Other than a slight increase in consumption which was offset by the cheaper price when first introduced I have had no problems but the local Shell servo is no longer selling it and is switching all E10 pumps to diesel. If they could get rid of the lingering diesel smell I to would think about switching but I cant see that happening for a while. Cheers MD

E10 is fine, easily better than 91 octane. If I'd run it all the time I'd swap a e85 compatiable filter in at my regular service interval.

What happens to the price of E10 fuel when the government decides there's enough of a captive market for it (when most servo's have stopped selling plain unleaded), and drops the huge taxpayers subsidies on it, and we see the true cost of producing it included in the bowser price...?

That should be interesting...

Yep not a good idea with marine or aircraft apps and is why lots of people use it for the first time and say it runs like crap. The water in your tank is now mixed with ethanol a is being burnt in your engine of course its going to run like s#*t. Run a couple of tanks of E10 before you make up your mind people.
