From now on, I'm going to ask the mechanic questions about the I6 and if he can't answer one question, too bad, so sad. He's about to get a phone call too...

Well, the Unichip I can't program myself, so that's out of the question.
Anyway, the car is done. Finished. He said it's a little bit doughy down low on take off, but flys after that. Sounds good to me. Don't wanna hear what the damage bill is though...

Nah, I'll be "taking it easy" until the ECU re-learns somewhat, then I'm going to FIST Performance in Brisbane to get the Unichip in.

What?
Tell me before I do something stupid... The only reason I didn't go to CNJ is because they aren't open on weekends... Is it because they're only good at tuning Japanese cars?

I don't think Steve tunes Unichip. His RDP ECU doesn't read two fuel maps either.
Why are people so unkind?

Bugger Kenny. I just read the whole story. Tough luck mate. I know what it's like. Could have been worse though. At least you got it back. I like the idea of saving for the XR6T.
I was talkin to someone about RDP the other day. Saying how I have heard lots of wonderful things about them through the forums here, but never dealt with them myself. And this guy said he had spoken to some people who were really unhappy. I can't remember what he said exactly. I think it was something along the lines of rushing jobs and not paying full attention. Anyway, not my opinion. Just something somone said to me. What have other guys found?

I've heard nothing but good things about Steve's work, bar a small thing that someone said on the Wide Bay cruise last year (which I ignored, and I won't say who either)
Maybe I should use something else rather than Unichip...

Hmm... Interesting that it was someone on the Wide Bay cruise. I could probably guess who but won't. I don't even remember who it was that made the comment I am referring to. Like I said, I've heard only good stuff from the forums.
As for your chip, be careful. A mate of mine just got a new computer into his EF Turbo. It is now sitting in his shed, collecting dust. We have tried many different things to get it working. It has no spark, we can only put it down to the ECU. The guy who installed it is on holidays for a month. It will be going back as soon as he returns. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it is. Either a Chiptorque or Microtech. I think it is Microtech. But I'm not certain.

if you can get a chiptorque unit to do what you want then you could drive down to southport and have the actual company tune it.

That's what I'm thinking Simmo.
There's a guy in Nambour who sells them, although if it's tuned or not, I don't know. I'd say it would be.

I'm not too sure about edit, it's only new-ish, and not many people have it done. I want to see results first, then ask questions.
I've fired off an enquiry to ChipTorque, see what they think.

it would have their basic tune on it, but i know that the head tester/tuner/engineer guy for chiptorque is frequently at the southport location and does personally hand tune cars. i reckon he'd be more than up for yours as it would be a challenge.

Just take it easy champ.Run it in for a few days as has been said .Also just enjoy it.
As far as my comment on chips...they are terrific.Even the edit is very good. The thing I dont like is having to go back time and time again to a tuner every time I want to change things. Also tuning the edit seemed not to hard at all.

You need something you can plug into, via usb to your laptop, with a windows based program, and play around till your hearts content.

you can build and tune your own ECU; megasquirt for about 350 bucks, just need a soldering iron and a steady hand. You can even programme your own modules for it and its all open source, does heaps. Google it.

He wasn't wrong about the doughieness down low either, power doesn't come on until around 2000-2500rpm, before that it feels flat, then BAM!!! Timing is absolutely spot on too, doesn't hunt for idle (it did previously, on both fuels), and it actually fixed a flatspot I had on gas where it would take about a second or two to get acceleration again after you take your foot off the pedal. I'm going to run it in over the next couple of days then have a dyno run and see exactly what difference it has made. Was it worth the week wait? Well, after riding around in Mitsubishis and Toyotas for the past week, in that regard, yes. But until I see what it's done on the dyno, no comment.

I wouldnt worry too hard on what the dyno says, seat of the pants paints a better picture usually. Dyno for my ute yields rosie figures, but it still cant pull its weight on the quarter yet due to the high diff ratio and sluggish auto. Probably never will improve considering how much money ive dug into the XP.
