bought a 1981 VH SLE with a 202 for $300. wasnt running. $80 later and a reco dizzy and she was. gave her a respray in white with blule pearl, re-done the whole front end. ended up spending $2000 on her, and still wasnt rwc or rego'd. our fence fell down so we got some guys in to fix it, they loved the car, and offered $3000. who would say no lol

Cheapest was probably my first car , but I had to work for it . Same as now , farming is a real gamble and dad couldn't afford to pay for extra workers all the time , so when I left school I worked on the farm for a "bit of pocket money" , when we sold out dad bought me an XK Falcon and it cost $500 . I thought I was "just it" because it was white , had a RED "Autoluxe Flash" (I think it was called) down the side , Red roof and 2 GO-FAST stripes between the tail lights .

Being a mostly Ford family , my son 15 y/o is a little embarrassed , he's been working for a mechanic mate of mine since January on Saturday mornings , for a couple of dollars here and there , sweeping up , helping out being a "third hand" Etc. I told him "money isn't everything , you're learning as well".
A couple of weeks ago my mate say's to him " Do you think that car over there will do you ? . He was given a pretty neat manual Camira , with pink slip . He was Over the Moon .

Goes to show , if you're willing to do a little work MOST times it pays off .

Must be common. My mate got his "88 magna for a slab. The only thing wrong with it was the timing chain.

The cheapest car I've bought was my first car, a 302 XA coupe for $1800 sold as traded from a car yard. Although technically I didnt buy it, thats what parents are for. The cheapest car I payed for with my own money was a GXL for $2500. I then sold it 6 months later for $1600. Not my best financial decision.

Got 3 honda civics for free. Rally bashed them solid for 3 months during winter, after going thru knee deep creeks and getting them air born, 2 died, I sold one for $500.

The most fun you'll ever have with cars is in cheap ones you dont car care about.

My boss has bought me a few paddock bashers....

A Datsun 120Y manual (sold to a guy who was putting running gear into a Morris)

Ford EA sedan. Must have had heavy duty suspension cause it was really high. also column auto with vinal seats. (sold to scrap metal)

Holden Camira. I didnt drive it as it was literally a flintstone's mobile - no floor. (sold to scrap metal)

Toyota Celica 1979. Ignition system shorted out one day wen i was driving. (sitting in a shed)

Ford Laser KB. Rolled down a hill in between two houses. (still driving it)

All these were free to me to bash & smash & do what ever.

My boss found an XF ute at the wreckers. He had a look threw it & found a current pink slip in the glove box so he bought it for about $200 & it had 12 months rego!!

I got a free Sigma, 4 speed.
served extremely well as a paddock basher, i rolled it about 3 times... just bashed out the dints and pushed it back the right way up and off she went...
Only problem was, i snapped the wheel studs on the back driver side, so out came the mig welder and she was back on, haha
Then the diff and gearbox lunched themselves at the same time, so $50 from the wreckers and all was sweet....

My XD Ghia cost $750, we tickled it up a bit and a few months later we saw the guy we bought it off. He offered us $2000 to buy it back.

My XD project was a freebie. Dumped in my Grandmother's apartment block. Couldn't find the owners after they moved, no one claimed it, and it was to be scrapped.

Dad has "bought" a few cars for a case of beer.
Last one being one of the old hatchback style Skylines. It's on it's way to the wreckers this weekend.
He bought his old courier for $400 from the trading post, and a 1960 something Corona for $300.
It got stolen just before we sold it, and the police gave us a funny look when they read that it was only worth $300 on the report. I guess they wondered why we'd bother looking for it. (Was found 2k's from where it was stolen. Taken for a joyride by morons who couldn't drive manual)

1982 mazda 626 sedan for $60. was my second car, didnt see the reasoning in using lead petrol when unleaded was cheaper. i learnt my lesson 2 weeks after i registered it i ran into some electrical problems. turns out one of the pistons came out the side of the block and knocked the distributor cap off....

Was given a 78' Mitsubishi Sigma once. It lasted 2 years before the head cracked, then another 3 months with a cracked head before it started spewing coolant out the exhaust one day and I ended up having to drive it into the wreckers on the way to work. ;)
