I am only 21 so when I am on night shift and cruising to the servo to get the paper in my BA the cops usually take a good look at it, and once I was pulled over. I was wearing my shitty ink covered overalls with a towel on the seat so not to mess it up and must have looked hell dodgy!

"Where did you get this from?"
"How much?"
"How old are you, can I see your license?"

After he did whatever with the license he started asking me how it goes and what it was like on fuel, is that the standard exhaust, where do you work, where you driving to, many speeding fines yet?

He was alright, I actually got back late from my break and got abused by the printer I was working with! Where I work is a pretty rough area, so I told him I appreciate him actually pulling me over and checkin it out, at least if it did get stolen one night there is someone who cares and the bastard might just get caught and I would get the car back!

Im in the same boat as you, i've just turned 2o and the cops see a young bloke behind the wheel and go after you. If my car ever gets stolen i hoe it never comes back & the poor fool who takes better hope he never gets caught, i dont want it back if some other ******** has thrashed the guts out of it. I drive my car hard but i dont thrash it.

No speeding fines in this car YET, they cant keep up.

My grandma told me about 5 times while I was at her house how one time she got pulled over for speeding and told the guy she was speeding because her son left her credit cards at her house and wanted to catch him before he left on a 250km drive to where he lives and the policeman let her off with it, which I was honestly surprised about I would of thought that isnt a good enough reason to ticket her, I actually wished he did then I wouldnt of heard the story so many times from grannie.

Yeah im pretty sure that the network provider has a log of all calls made, not sure how far the backlog is though.

No doubt a savvy lawyer or a determined prosecutor would be able to get the info with a bit of paper-shuffling...

$112!!! Take em to court!! Nah not really, your a lucky man!

Has anyone got any more info about the legalities of scanners (in VIC in particular)? Mines pretty well constantly running. To make matters worse, it's an in-dash jobbie, so i can't really chuck it under a seat if i get pulled up. Been though a couple of breath-tests with it on (vol. down) and no one noticed/cared. Something else i've always wondered, is it illegal to talk on a CB? Truckies/busies/couriers do it all the time, but chatting on the phone is banned, so the CB has to be a dodgy issue...
Luckily for me driving an old LandCruiser doesn't attract much attention, you guys have some horror stories there...

No licence: car seizure move
By Mark Russell
January 16, 2005

Unlicensed drivers may face having their cars seized under anti-hooning laws.

A spokeswoman for Police Minister Andre Haermeyer said impounding cars could become part of the anti-hooning legislation the Government is examining.

It could be used more broadly to include unlicensed drivers, she said.

The move follows a Victorian police submission in January last year to a state parliamentary inquiry into the Government's road safety strategy.

It called for new laws to allow the seizure of repeat unlicensed drivers' cars.

The proposed anti-hooning legislation has been referred to the Government's Ministerial Road Safety Council and follows the deaths of two young men in October.

They were passengers in a car allegedly drag racing that smashed into a pole in St Kilda.

NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania have introduced anti-hooning laws that include the power to confiscate cars.

An RACV spokesman said the organisation would be reluctant to support a blanket confiscation of cars from unlicensed drivers. because it could cause hardship if a seized car belonged to a driver's family.
AdvertisementAdvertisement

But Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby welcomed the move.

He claimed the number of unlicensed drivers had become an epidemic.

The number of unlicensed drivers in Victoria is difficult to assess.

But Mr Scruby claimed anecdotal evidence from police and insurance companies showed more than 10 per cent of drivers on the state's roads never had a licence, had been disqualified from driving or were driving after having their licences cancelled or suspended.

There are more than 3.4 million licensed drivers in Victoria.

Mr Scruby said unlicensed drivers were eight times more likely to be involved in crashes than licensed drivers and were a major contributor to the road toll.

"This is a group of people who don't give a stuff about anybody else on the roads," he told The Sunday Age. "They are a very dangerous group of drivers. Honestly, they will continue to drive until they kill someone and are locked up."

Mr Scruby urged the Government to adopt the New Zealand system in which cars driven by unlicensed drivers were impounded for a month. Repeat offenders had their cars confiscated.

About 1000 cars are seized each month in New Zealand. But there was a 40 per cent drop in the number of unlicensed drivers caught during the 12 months after the measure was introduced five years ago.

In a separate development, VicRoads has rejected a NSW Government discussion paper calling for cars driven by unlicensed drivers to be marked with special number plates.

Unlicensed drivers caught behind the wheel would have the car's number plates confiscated for a month.

The owner of the car would then have to apply for the special plates that could remain on the car for three years.

A VicRoads spokeswoman said the proposal was not being considered.
Nice to see that :tool: Harold Scruby (LOL) come up with some more left wing drivell :jerk: :lookedat:

It is not illegal to have a scanner,if the cops give you a hard time over having a scanner, just tell them your barrister will be in touch, after you take their badge numbers.

Yep the cop was a real ***** at the time, he even asked how an unemployed welder could get a car like this!, and after all his bull s**t of "up to $4000 in fine's or 4 months in goal and have time added to your suspension " he only gave me a $112 fine and 2 points.

This thing of people driving with suspended license, with out knowing it has been suspended happen all the time here N.S.W. I work for a large transport group & this is common happen all the time. They go to renew their license or rego only to find out that their license has been suspended for one reason or another. As said before someone not at fault will be the made to suffer because they had a accident with a unlicense person, then they are up the creek because they have no license & the authorities saying it your fault, that we told you we sent a letter. The Police & Road authority which every state need to make sure that people understand that they have no license & that they can not drive & the risk they take & what can haappen when the drive with no license. I'm not defending people that knownly do this but there are to many people that have been caught out unknownly that they are doing the wrong thing. They need people to come in the a office & hand over their license & start the driving suspention from then.

Well Vic Roads have just sent me a letter saying that my licence is suspended and if I don't hand my licence in within 7 days it's a $500 and I may have my suspention time added to!.
Not to bad, since the fact that my licence has been suspended from the 2nd of December!!!!! and will get it back on the 2nd of March!!!
THE last letter saying anything about my licence that I had from Vic Roads was in September "04" telling me that I need to renew my licence before the 16th of November "04".

It is not illegal to listen to Police or any other emergency service radio broadcasts, the only time it becomes a problem is if you have a transmitter, which lets you talk on thier frequencies. However it is becoming more difficult to listen as more service's go digital, you will have to spend big dollars to go digital and still listen in.

Martin is basically correct, Police cannot search your vehicle o n the grounds of suspicion alone, they must have 'reasonable grounds' which means you might be a known offender or a radio check comes back with details about your past which would give them the grounds to search your car. But simply saying they have the right to search is crap.

It is an offence if you use the information you get from the scanner to aid you in a criminal act...ie performing burnouts (and other antisocial acts) outside a scumbuckets residence, and then leaving the scene when you hear on the scanner for the local car to attend your location...
not that I've ever done any of that....hehehe

Police arent all that bad, i have some friends in traffic, and usually they get alot of smartasses, unfortunately, the tend to loe their temper and so, innocent drivers pay the price. That said, there are also some downright drop kicks. Many of the CCC people have alot of trouble with one officer in particular down the Knox and Wantirna way. His name escapes me at present however.
