Happy birthday XA.

Had an XA coupe as my first car. And it wasn't that long ago; mid '90s.

Would love a manual V8 XA sedan as a toy...maybe one day.

I realized they were 40 years old the other day too, prior to reading the article.

I'm one of the youngins.. or used to be. I bought my XB sedan when I was 18. I (now) have a 1972 XA Coupe and a 1973 XB Sedan. I'm 13 years younger than the XA.

I thought I was doing well with being 10 years yonger than my GT, and I brought it when I was 21.

Yeah I picked that up too. It's a 5.8L. But back in 72 it wouldn't have been called anything but a 351 Cleveland. A motor Australia took from America and made a legend out of, while America largely ignored it. Australia claimed the 351 Cleveland as it's own and we absolutely loved it. What an awesome engine the 351 Cleveland was. Raw brute power, and done right, they screamed when the loud pedal was opened up. I have many fond memories of my Cleveland. We went everywhere together. :(

It wasn't much of a factor in street American Fords because it debuted just as compression was reduced and emissions and fuel economy became major issues.

The 1971 Boss 351 Mustang excelled in every category of performance, but as a one-year-only model in a "heavy" body style, it doesn't have much of a following.

On race tracks it was a different story. Starting in 1972, Bud Moore realized that the 351C could make significantly more power than the Boss 429 when the Boss engine was hobbled by a restrictor plate. Even when the Boss didn't have the restrictor plate, the Cleveland wasn't too far behind, and it saved a significant amount of weight over the 429.

Bud Moore (who had previously embarrassed Carroll Shelby's factory-sponsored Trans Am Mustangs with his heavier '67 Mercury Cougars) led the transition from big-block to small-block engines in NASCAR, and the 351 Cleveland was the engine that did it.

Wow, how time can change perceptions... I always thought the XA was the ugly duckling in the GT lineage, but age has obviously not wearied them as some of these cars look fantastic and better than I ever rememer XA's looking through my younger eyes.

72 XA Fairmont 302 was my first car, she's 9 years older than me.
My sister got a $2500 XF wagon as her first car, 2 years later I got a $6000 XA, but Mum knew it was the price to pay to make me happy. Meant heaps to me, Mums gone now so the XA will be with me forever.
The chief loves it too, but she knows that the house would sell before the XA does!

Happy Birthday to my big girl!
this means I'll have to re-reg her and put the 351 in like I've always planned....
