Okay smart people, where's the error in this one (and I know it this time) : 2 =1 !!!!! Given that a=b : a=b a² = ab (multiply both sides by a) a² - b² = ab - b² ( subtract b² from both sides) (a-b)(a+b) = b(a-b) (factorise) a+b = b (divide both sides by a-b) b+b = b (as a=b) 2b = b 2 = 1 |

Don't all get wound up about this guys.
This is just another symptom of an education system in which no one is allowed to fail so exams are just made easier and easier and any assistance such as "open book" or calculator/computer is allowed. I challange ANYONE here under the age of 40 to add up a column of 4 digit numbers, do long division by a 3 digit number or multiply two 3++ digit numbers in their heads. Or even on a piece of paper with a pencil........ |

Division and Multiplication are done 'at the same time', but you must also work left to right....so you do the 48/2 first, which leaves you with the 24(12). Then you multiply this to get 288.

Curses ! Foiled again ! The error is - a + b = b (divide both sides by (a - b)) If a = b as stated, then a - b = 0. You can't divide by zero.... It all starts here : a²- b² = ab - b² (subtract b squared from both sides) where you have effectively made the equation 0 = 0... |

For everyone reading the thread:
-There is no such thing as BOMDAS*. -Once again the correct (and only) answer is 288. There is no grey area, this is very simple and straightforward mathematics.

That was the only exam so far we were allowed to have book in with us, its fail rate is massive and I was lucky to scrape through with a P. I dont know what schools/uni's you are referring to but there are many people that fail exams. OT but the exam as a major part of seeing what someone "knows" can be argued both ways.

It's a bit like the 1+2X3 that I always get my kids with.
Non scientific calculators and smart *** kids get 9 all the time! They look at me like I'm from Mars when I tell them the answer is 7. |

I was always taught BOMDAS, so I get 2 based on that theory above.
If you were taught BODMAS, then the answer is 288.

Education policy changes and you are a product of your education. Most young people I know can't drive a manual crash box car with no power steering or aircon either. Not because they are not smart enough but because they have never had to and therefore never really learned how or practiced it. The one thing about age and knowlege that seems universal is the you must get dumber as you get older. Teenagers know EVERYTHING and EVERYTHING. In your 20s you know MOST things. In your 30s you think you know a lot about some things. In your 40s you think you know a fair bit about some things. Above that you start to realise that you really don't know much about many things and almost nothing about most things AND NEVER DID......... The sad thing is that until you are old you will never know just how much you did not really understand...... |

Well other than my silly 0.8 answer because I post to quickly and dont read properly I dont feel so bad now...
Technically BODMAS and BOMDAS can be interchangeable anyway because D and M are. Those cal answers are interesting..the old TI-83 I have gets the following: 48/2(9+3) = 288 BUT, same calc but with the notation that I was taught: 48/(2(9+3)) = 2 - while the question didn't have the bracket infront of the 2 originally this is how I was taught to write it. Agreed with the head **** comment..LOL..because maths out of all the things in the world should be black and white. Flappist, while I agree on the car thing we need to move on with technology. if we didn't we would all still be chasing wilderbeast for dinner. But there are some skills that perhaps have merit to continue.
