In fact my sketchy driving history didn't even count towards the insurance on my truck either because it didn't happen in a commercial vehicle - the insurance company wasn't interested in what I did in a car, they were more concerned about me being new to the industry. Even though I'm quite aware I drive like a flog, I agree with how they cherry pick which laws they choose to enforce, but that's not just related to speeding, it occurs all the way across Victoria, it was very evident during the lockdown era. Spend a day in your local magistrates court and watch all the convictions and see how driving offences are treated much harsher than violent crimes like domestic/family violence, rapes and stuff like illicit drug supply offences. Go google Adrian Bayley if you want to see an interesting example of the legal system taking the **** in Victoria. Its just because its politically popular to punch down on driving offences in the eyes of the public, I reckon there will be community backlash and the police are going to get a talking to in the Surf Coast community about booking people for driving too slow as it directly contradicts the 'speed kills' messaging thats been going on for decades. |

…..and it’s damned annoying when they don’t realise the light has turned green.. In peak hour a while back, motorbike copper with head cam, catching tons in stopped traffic, all he had to do was catch the rear plate, move forward to the drivers door and faces caught. If he caught one, he caught twenty or more that morning, just about everyone doing it. |

To be fair, the speedo would have been showing close to 70. Sure, it might be revenue raising, but it is voluntary.

True...thats what I tell them.
It is the lowest reading I have seen, due the reshuffling of brackets etc recently. But when you get pinged for this and they cant/wont stop the juvenile car theives that the drivers are dodging daily, you wonder where the govts priorities are. Hence the trains and Olympics comments. |

Download Waze and use it. Great way to make sure you don’t inadvertently add to the revenue.
I know this will make some AFF users who don’t understand technology angry. Like that guy from last time I mentioned Waze. Old mate was furious about the scenario he made up in this own head because he didn’t understand it. |

Waze seems to work a treat as a lot of people use it and report things. |

That’s it. I’ve had camera notifications before and see the speed camera car still setting up. A lot of active users makes sure it’s pretty much always up to date. Not only for speed cameras but hazards on road, stopped vehicles, heavy traffic, road work and all the other things you can report

I've only seen about four motorbike cops in the last 12 years on our roads and two of them were a few weeks ago

I have seen them on bicycles in Melbourne, but they do nab the phone users on the spot.

If you put that money into actually doing something we'd have roads made out of gold with blokes in suits and fedoras polishing it by hand every 100 meters. |

Yep, the inability to control one's right foot is someone else's fault...

I wish people would stop trotting this one out.
It's a tax on normal human behaviour. Black out your speedo and I bet you (and most of us) would get done time and again. Our cars are safer and more insulated from their surroundings than ever before. If there's nothing to be gained by policing to as little as 3kph over the limit, then why do it? |

We used to regularly do the Adelaide/Sydney run over the Hay Plain. Usually over 2 days, but occasionally in 1. Adding 10-15kph to your average speed makes a huge difference. More alert, but more importantly, more likely to finish that day's driving during daylight hours, and dusk is a terribly unsafe time to drive (animals, visibility, circadian rhythm/fatigue).

As for normal behaviour, I think you'll find in the big scheme of things, those caught speeding are still a minority. Modern cars are safer, but humans haven't changed. It's the humans that are predictable. If the govt announced there would be no penalty for exceeding the speed limit, what speed would you drive? There's your answer as to why they don't announce tolerances in most states. Human psychology 101.

Because you say its so easy to stay below the limit. I disagree. If you dont prioritise looking at your speedo, its actually very easy to end up over. There's a reason cops love setting up at the bottom of hills.
