michael jordan started the sports marketing giant that modern sports have become, but i dont even consider him the best basketballer of all time

for me, tiger woods makes an unbearable sport watchable

i dont think its possible to say one person is the greatest sportsman of all time, how do you decide between;

tiger woods
oscar robertson
ALI
the don
wally lewis
usain bolt
michael phelps
that russian chick who got the first perfect 10
joe montana
bill russell (more rings than fingers)

my point is, there is so many differences between players in certain sports that its too hard to decide, let alone comparing sportspeople from different sports

EDIT- also its impossible to compare athletes from different eras as conditions were different

For me Schumacher would be up top.
He gained every record in F1, has more titles than anyone else will probably ever get, even when the FIA kept changing the rules to slow him down, he was the highest paid sports star for a couple of years, is a complete professional and has not been involved in any scandals/allegations. Also, he's a simple family man and quite a philanthropist. Donated over 10 million US of his own money to the victims of 911, organised the F1 safety council and best of all, can laugh at himself like when he was the stig.

No he didn't. Ron Tauranac designed the cars.

Hmmmm.... Merit in that! Virtually unacknowleged here too?
One Ivan Mauger who won 5 or 6 would have to come close to the best solo ever though? (and a Kiwi)

There is no right answer as it's all relevant, for eg. 4vman is involved with Basketball, so it's only expected that he would see MJ/Pippen/Bird or Johnson as the greatest.
Personally i think the greatest would be an individual, not from a team.
For me i'd say
Federer
Schumacher
Rossi
Woods
Slater
Beechley

All have dominated their sport over a long period

I can agree with you above Bent 8 so in that case 2 groups for sport individual and team sports.....and that they are involved in global sports.

Spot on, and lets be honest, its impossible to compare different "bests" from each sport to come up with the "greatest".. its all relevant to personal preference.

So I guess a Decathlete should be considered for the best sportsman:

Decathlon events:

* 100 meters
* Long Jump
* Shot Put
* High Jump
* 400 meters
* 110 meter hurdles
* Discus
* Pole Vault
* Javelin
* 1500 meters

A pretty good indication for overall abilities and skill.

Very nice.

That title would have to go Jeff Wilson who represented his country at the top level in both rugby union and cricket...two very diverse sports. To play at the top level in one sport is fantastic but in two is remarkable

Second would be Carl Lewis for his achievements at the 1984 LA Olympics and beyond.

For those that think the title should go to Tiger Woods...then why not Roger Federer ?....Tiger is no better at golf than Roger is at tennis IMO

Bradman is around 50% above (statistically) than peers in his sport.. not many long term sportsman have acheived that.

Maybe Armstrong or eventually Tiger Woods.

whilst bradman may have an average of 99.94, he only played 52 tests. not taking anything away from his career stats but i'd put a little indian fellow and possibly a small west indian fellow ahead of him. tendulkar has just racked up his 43rd test hundred (45 in ODI's) and is closing in on 13000 runs.

there are players these days that average well over 100 for a season or 2 (admittedly not 50 tests).
