I like how they have the indigenous art on the side of it, must be paying respects to their biggest 'customer' of their services

Hi Guy,s
I myself find it very sad that the last Holden Highway Patrol car is gone out of service. saying that its sad Holden n Ford both shut down. I often wonder had GM In America not owned Holden and the Australian Government had Brought Holden from GM would it still be operating? The same goes for Ford if the Government had brought ford Australia would it still be with us? The late Peter Brock would turn over in his grave if he knew Holden was gone and not making cars in Australia any longer. I dont know why The Australian Government didnt buy Holden? In 2009 General Motors filed for bankruptcy and became largely owned by the US Government. Why on earth didnt we do the same thing? |

If your comment was in response to my post, my comment was aimed at GM, not GM-H, for clarity.

Hi Guys
Lets just say the Australian Government brought Holden from GM in America. They kept the same staff at Holden, the same designers, engineers, all the same staff. That would have been better then noting at all our car industry is dead now. In 1960 we had 68 brands offering 380 models sold and serviced by almost 4000 car dealers in Australia. How did it go so wrong so quickly |

Just trivial stuff. My dads last car ex Vic Pol General Duties 1987 XF Falcon GL. History: In late 89 about 20 were bought by Strapp Ford, Doncaster, Melbourne. Telltale signs:
1) Had Ghia interior light with the spot lights. (Same as used in Holden SL/e / Caprice / Calais etc) 2) Drill holes at base of passenger door for baton. 3) Holes in passenger A pillar to accomodate map light. 4) Delete power steering. 5) No radio 6) Boot popper - did GL get this? 7) outline of number on roof - ie paint slightly shinier. 8) air con fitted. ...was a good car. typical XF fuel gauge. I could never work out the heater / air con controls with the directional arrows at base. |

The most common comment you hear is that they stop building Commodores because nobody was buying them any more. This is total rubbish of course, the VF Commodore was always in the top 3 best sellers until the end. Dr Terry |

However, I do agree with incentivising buyers of Australian made vehicles - free rego, no GST or LCT on Australian designed and manufactured vehicles would have been better rather than handing out billions of dollars to their American company owners who took all the cash back to the US. |

Use your favourite search engine and look at the decline in numbers of Commodore Sold from 1995 to 2016. GM took most of GMH's export markets for themselves. I read several years ago a Car Plant needed to be manufacturing over 100,000 cars per annum to be economically viable. |

As soon as the government co-investment money ran out, so too did Ford, Holden and Toyota.
Everytime a new Falcon or Commodore was proposed, always conditional on the tax payers contributing a healthy portion and the government agreeing to significant fleet orders. Today, the government doesn’t have to carry hundreds of million in funding to support sheltered workshops for global car companies with their hands out. Today, they just waste that funding on something else, maybe rock painting or electric vehicles funding via green zealot taxes on the oil consuming working classes… |
