Power is relative!

How do you feel about a convertible?
The MX-5s love to rev, and with a lightweight body they go ok. But you'd have to be looking at last year's demos with a few extra kms, to get one under $40k.

The 86/BRZs should be found with your price bracket, but again it's a free-wheeling N/A rather than a Turbo.

WRX fits the performance bill, but again would be mostly out of your price bracket.

Otherwise you're basically stuck with a Hyundai, either the 1.6 or 2.0 Turbo

Small to medium is a good size, prefer hatch or wagon due to the opening of the boot, liftback even better but no manuals in this body type. Not interested in a bike. I want manual because it adds enjoyment to my drive, I want turbo for the torque (I don't want a diesel) I want a hatch or wagon as they are practical, I don't want an SUV because I'm not 70 yet. Not really that bizarre in requirements I didn't think?

I am grateful for all the replies, thank you to everyone who has commented so far It has been a fun exercise!

Currently I'm going to drive:

-Fiesta ST

-Hyundai n-line sedan (not hatch due to older interior and I like the look of the bizarre sedan as well as the strange combo of manual and sedan, very different in 2021)

-Skoda Scala Hatch/Wagon

3 completely different cars but all have their own good qualities.

But it is the benchmark for Everyman Performance...not sure what that is though, think it is a metric used when you are judging people by what they drive when those same people give no ****s about what you drive or your opinion

Nah, that's cool, but you didn't specify at first, you just said "Manual Turbo"

Since you're chasing torque, yeah you can disregard my suggestions of the MX5 or 86...

If you want new, in your price range, you seem to be mostly caught with a Hyundai.
If it were me, I'd either stretch my budget, or go for something late-model, and look at a WRX.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my XR4, but that was still only 110kw in a light body, and the newer ones I just can't get my head around the 3-cylinder engine. There's just something unnatural about that, and it would screw with my OCD.

Why?

The Fiesta ST 1.5 litre turbo Dragon engine has cam chain drive, port and direct injection (no walnut blasting), a conservative 150 kw, 300 nm torque- and the torque curve is fat.

It feels like a big worked six- similar to a modded Ford alloy 250 straight 6 with holley, cam, head porting, shaved head etc in a Cortina TE or a flat boxer 3.2 litre in a Cayman S power and torque wise. The Cayman had more revs and power up high, but very similar feel torque wise.

What is not to like? Maybe the character riddled throbbing engine?

And if you roll for a Revo tune with intercooler upgrade, you get 260 hp with about 400nm. With that first gear pull off will be a handful, but this car is not about the stoplight drag, its all about rolling point to point squirt in traffic/tight roads- where it even standard is a blast.

I personally love good engineering and this engine is very good engineering (German and English engineering design input).

Thanks for your suggestions, I've had many a drive in an XR4, problem with that engine was it wasn't a turbo, not enough power for the awesome chassis, it was always the downside to that car, they are a great thing but the power really limits them. If you don't get the Mk8 Fiesta because of the 3 cylinder try the previous 1.6T 4, its still a rocket ship, however, this current 3 is an absolute cracker, even in a Focus.

Everything you are saying is why I got out of the Mustang, I just couldn't use it around town, that engine isn't built for everyday, great car, not knocking it but the engineering of that engine doesn't come into its own until you are breaking the speed limit, everyone calls me mad but I enjoyed to Ecoboost as a daily a lot more (it didn't have the sound obviously)

Price bracket and being 'new' puts you in the small hatch bracket.

Fiesta ST (ignore Daz the engine is a beast)
Mini cooper - they look good
I30 N-line surely the best value
swift sport - doesnt look good IMO
Golf - looks like Nanas car

stretch the budget to a WRX? would be well worth it

I would agree, I30N has just been updated and Starts at $44,500 + On roads. I would stretch the budget for that, or even look at dealers with runout on pre update stock as they will run rings around the other options given.

Other than that (if the budget doesnt stretch) look at Fiesta ST or the about to be released I20N which, according to reviews, is awesome and every bit as good as Fiesta ST.

It's basically a slightly retuned Focus 2.0L
In that lightweight body, it's still quite peppy, and even after all these years its fun to drive, but yes only 110kw.

The 1.6 turbo in the i30 gets going really well. 150kw is nothing to sneeze at in a car that size. Especially with the low down torque.

I've never had a three cylinder of any kind but it wouldn't put me off. The Fiesta ST seems like a good (great?) car; perhaps a bit small? Toyota went to a triple for the GR. Plenty of three cylinder bikes about. Suzuki and Kawasaki had two-stroke triples decades ago. MV Agusta might have had a three-cylinder GP bike, but I would have to check to be certain.

I'm in the like it camp. Although I prefer the in cabin noise best, it has a bit of straight 6 tone to it. Just a bit different to the usual thrashy four pot noise.

Its an engine-no more or less- less cylinders means less frictional power losses and more torque, but less power for a similar volume engine with more cylinders. Less cylinders and less valves means less weight for similar volume engine with more drivetrain.

Drive one- you may be surprised.
Performance tuned 3 cylinder engines are very desirable in my view. I've really enjoyed the layout in motorcycles and drove the current Fiesta ST, that engine is a total home run. While for sure there are some very effective 4 cylinder engines on sale today, they tend to stack neatly and I'd argue that few can match the visceral experience delivered by a 3 cylinder or 5 cylinder.
