Facebook only creates dramas if you let it. Set your privacy settings accordingly, block/ignore annoying friends/family members posts, and most of all don't let facebook get in the way of you living your life.

I signed up for FB under my real name on recommendations from friends that use it, filled in the usual fields and FB spat up a 70% correct list of people I knew/known. Scared the crap out of me. I wrongly thought that when you sign up that you would type in a persons name in a search engine to try and locate them and let them know you're onboard - yes, that's possible, but I didn't want my name getting thrown out there to folk I don't know or want have anything to do with that I do know.
I haven't been back on FB since except to lock up the privacy security settings as tight as I could. I found this to be a simple excellent resource tutorial for tightening things up: http://facecrooks.com/Internet-Safet...security.html/ Hope this helps out anyone who has concerns about their account. Cheers!

Facebook, Forums and all forms of social media are absolutely no drama what so ever.
Its those that do not know where the 'Sign Off' command is. That is the 1 and only problem. No one that I know accidently participates?

I have to be honest, I've used it since 2007 and whilst there are times where I use it a lot, and times where I don't, I've never had an issue with it.
Sure people get annoying with their posts (new mums give me the poo's the worst) but simply scroll by and who cares? I have heard of plenty of people falling to dramas and fighting over FB, but they seem to be the type of people that would be childish and catty in real life anyway. Plus you need to remember, if you put it on the net, it stays on the net. No matter how "tech savvy" you choose to believe you are, if you put it out there then it is done. As long as you're ok with that, then you'll be fine.

My facebook is usually pretty good. I don't get involved in the drama. I just cook some popcorn and scroll.

As I close in on somewhere around 28 years online, I believe that what you get from an experience with most online social media (including these forums here) is up to yourself. You pick which people to listen to, who gets in your face, who you pay attention to and who you share your vulnerabilities with. Sucky drama-filled people? yeah, let's unfollow/defriend/place on ignore/block those.
But there are places where it's not that clear cut. I feel Facebook is one good example. Looking at where their income comes from - mostly advertising. We don't pay a cent in cash to join, what we pay is in attention. Their *paying* customers are the advertisers after our emotional attention. So in order to succeed, the facebook experience *must* be engineered around gaining our attention and ripping into our emotions (and good or bad is fine either way) in order to service those advertising customers. Whether or not it's designed consciously to be like that isn't relevant, it's that facebook features that make advertising succeed are the ones that survive to the next site makeover. It has a funneling effect that pushes users to be their worst, most emotional, neediest, most show-off, passive-aggressive selves. It's a human friction sieve. To me, even the best group of people I've known online when placed on facebook turn, on the whole, into a lesser group than elsewhere. Or put another way; facebook rewards being a drama hound. So I'm not there any more, deleted my account about a year ago. |
