Unreal, you can import any car you like at any time that you like.

The difference is I think you will find XR6 Martin that you cannot comply this vehicle for registration, if however the vehicle is over 15 (used to be) years old then you can.

You can import a SLK55 Leigh but you can't reg it for the road, you can however bring it over for closed circuit racing, I think there are also exemptions for certain open tarmac Targa style races.

You can import a Mustang, a GT or any other car that is not currently sold as new by a manufacturer here, the Hummer can still be imported but only the H1 and H2 but not the H3 as it will be soon imported by GM-H making it a manufacturer sold vehicle. Just as the GM pick ups and Suburbans are still being brought in by private importers and then simply taken to the compliance engineers for final inspection and plating.

You can do all of the conversion work if you like but you will still need to pay a fee to get compliance, this is payed to the holder of the current compliance agent licence.

The whole 12 month thing is about not having to pay duties on the vehicle, if you bring it as soon as you buy it then you are liable for full duties at the time, however if you have owned the vehicle and used it for 12 months then you can bring it over with minimal duty applicable. I can't remember the exact terms as it's been some time since I had anything to do with it, one of my first jobs was for a panel shop that did alot of conversion work in the late 80's.

The easiest way around this is to take 2 trips over, the first to buy it and you stay their for a couple of months, more if you can, the second is to organize shipping from their rather than through an agent here. You need to go over and stay for a while to show that you have actually used the car in the 12 months that you have owned it. Even if you kept it at a relatives and went and stayed their 2 or 3 times in the 12 months for a month each time, this would be enough to show continued ownership and use of the vehicle.

Why do they want you to own the car for 12 months for? That makes no sense to me at all. :

Owning the vehicle for less than 12 months prior to importing usually means you intend to onsell it for a profit pretty much as soon as it's here, whereas owning it for a period shows that you intend to hold on to the vehicle after it is brought into the country.

And that's why personal imports are not allowed unless the vehicle is to not be registered for road use, you cannot bring a SLK55 over yourself because the vehicle is available for sale in Australia by the manufacturer, unless you go by the 12 month rule (not sure about the 12 month rule though).

Even though Porsches, MB's, Ferraris and the like are being imported personally today you will find that these are over a certain age, it used to be I think 15 years from the date of manufacture that you could import a car that was also available here new. What the limit is now I'm not sure but there would be someone on here that would be up with the latest info I'm sure.

The whole thing is to protect the car markets here from people importing new cars and selling them for thousands under what the dealers are getting, imagine if you will a boat load of 3 series BMW's and A4 Audi's being sold new for the same price as a Magna or Camry which would be about the same price. The duties are supposedely to help stop this but are in fact just another way that they ensure we keep paying the ever inflating prices for the Australian product.

Yes I know you can import any damn car you want. But getting it though customs is another matter. It will not leave the docks without the proper paperwork. If the car is sold here in any guise and is under 15 years old, you will not get it road legal unless youve owned it for 12 months overseas.
A car that is not sold here has to be approved by the Government (DOTRS) under the SEVS, and imported by a RAWS approved workshop (who buy the rights to import particular cars plus an annual fee). If the car is new, you will be hit with the full duty (luxury car tax), if its used you only get hit with GST.

Only two Workshops are certified to bring in the current Mustang, Crossover Conversions (funny that) and a mob in Queensland.

Ive posted up the complete info already in regards to importing a car, I dont know whats so hard to understand. used:

Yes if you are rich enough you can get dealers to bring in particular models if they are nice enough, like special AMG Mercs or M-BMWs, but these are varients of models already sold here. Though no Ford dealer is going to do that if you want a Mustang.

Im happy to be proven wrong with some sort of evidence.

at www.dotars.gov.au/raws,
then go to search for a RAW

Yes I am, but where have you shown that a vehicle must be brought into the country only by a certified person??

Yes you need to use a shipping agent to look after all the paperwork and customs and all the rest but that's it.
