That among other things such as a speedo accuracy check and cruise control check.

Oh and I forgot, I saw a BF2 Ghia in Williamstown last night.

Chances are the dealer has ordered a stock of red and white that is available for immediate delivery and he was trying to talk you into taking one of those. Gets him his commission and sales tally up in December, rather than sometime next year.
Spot on. They don't build cars in batches.

Don't believe a word dealers say, half of them wouldn't know their **** from their elbow. Obviously just trying to sell him one they have already ordered.

As stated by others,

I used to work for XXXXX who make the cough* rear end for the falcon and both front and rear for the territory. Each car rolling down the line is different as XXXXX has to supply the correct rear end to match the car, e.g a 3.45 LSD for a XR followed by a 3.77 open for a territory etc etc. All the cars are paint batched,(note: when they do a paint run it is say silver, but they do all body types, sedan, ute and terry) however they are then held in the roof of the paint shop and as each individual order is required the body is released to assembly where all the parts are fitted, as each car gets to a certain point it sends a signal to XXXXX calling for a specific rear end, this is then programmed at XXXXX and built, (2 hour notice from memory). The rear end is then delivered on special stillage direct to the line and the SIDO numbers should in theory match and the correct rear end is fitted to the car, 1st the XR then the territory etc etc.
So in short as stated the dealer has ordered cars for stock and is hoping that you want the most popular colour (Red or White), if not, you have to get in line behind everybody else. And as for the 1st BF Ghia, sorry Ford execs will have them, followed by Ford suppliers who need them for ongoing testing, and good friends of Sales guys at the factory. Example the MD of XXXXX recieved his Turbo Territory Ghia 1 week after they were released. This was not pre-ordered either, just a simple phone call to Ford and the car jumps the rest of the populations orders.
BTW Ford pumps out about 480 cars a day depending on model mix, It has dropped due to lack of demand, Hence the retrenchments at Ford Broadmedows and Geelong.

But am I right in assuming that there would be certain times when Ford pump out standard cars without options to get their volume out to the fleets and then run a batch of customised Falcons, or can a Fairmont with all the boxes ticked sit between 10 bog standard XT's??

I would have thought with procurement the way it is they would try and build the easy, fast standard spec models quickly and then do the customs??

So much mythical crap about how the factory works in this thread.

I worked there for 3 weeks of work experience and saw everything, someone said the car becomes a rolling shell before the engine and trans are fitted.. made me a laugh.

Mazda Build cars differently to Ford/Holden/BMW. They build on large quantity and even build lower spec and higher spec cars on different lines. The Japanes can do this, but I'm sure they would struggle if they had to build cars like Ford do. Also the Mazda 3 had the problem with the rear tires getting premature wear (the tread looked like a barber pole) and also noises from the rear coming into the cabin.

Cars dont sit in the yard to settle unless they're part of a quality program. They go thru a squeek and rattle track and if it's good to ship out they go to the shipping yard, once they're there Ford arnt allowed to touch them with out premission.

Yes Ford do build cars for stock but not in batches of same colour. Each day they see what cars are required to fill the gaps.

When did you do 3 weeks work experiance? And if you think you learnt it all than your so off the mark. The engine, transmission, driveshaft and diff are sub assembled and the shell of the car (that has most of the interior and exterior) is lowered (and the engine, etc is lifted) and the car is put together. Than a few extra things are bolted on and it goes thru the underbody check. The car than gets it's wheels on, battery, programming, some interior bits are finished off, coolant than the final check before it goes thru the big quality check area.

From my days at Ford, going back 6 years, it would take around 3 weeks to get the car started in body build, then off to paint shop, who in those days worked two shifts I think, on to the PUS, then on to the assembly line. From memory it took less than 2/3 hours to go through the trim lines and come out the factory at the other end. Then depended on the model. If it had to go to Tickford, or went to the dealership. Usually it took me around 1 month in AU days to receive a XR6 from order date. Took less for a Futura.

If you bought a BA or recent Falcon you would have gotten half a dozen photos of your car on the assembly line, and one of them shows the body dropping on to the engine and tranny.

Mine were shit images though.
