Not sure if it's a Perth thing or not, but I heard a similar story on here about a guy in a Perth suburb, Bibra or Bribie Lake (or something) had his FG XR6T stolen and used as a getaway car.

Sadly we have to cage ourselves in our homes these days, I would be investing in sercurity screens all round after that.

I recently invested in a sercurity camera for my garage after my mobile phone was stolen (but tools, parts and car wasnt touched) and even got another dog (as my other one was a big baby).

Baseball bat nearby would be handy! and always keep ya mobile next to you when you sleep and fully charged. A chat with the kids too to tell them to hide under the beds etc.... should anything like this ever occur again.

one of my fathers friends actually killed a guy that broke into his house, this guy was around 60 but had been in the army and was built like a brick ****house. a guy broke in to his place, the crim had a knife, dad's mate disarmed him other guy kept going for him, he found a holding spot for the knife in his body cops came, he went to court over it but didn't get jail time. that was about 10 years ago, not sure how it would be now.

Shocking story mate, that must have been a horrible thing to live through.

As a word of warning to others I will share my own that our family had.

My mother was a victim of a home invasion, however she actually caught him in the act!

Walked into our home, saw a broken window, then as she walked into the lounge she found my playstation, TV's, VCR's etc all bundled up, then walked into my room where the mongrel was getting more stuff ready to steal.

She ran up to him and grabbed him by the wrists and started screaming at the top of her voice, to which he finally yelled "If you let me go I won't hurt you"... she screamed for a bit more, thought about it, let him go and yelled every obscenity in the book after him.

A dozen priceless pieces of family jewlery went missing but nothing more. When the cop *finally* rocked up they told her she's lucky he didn't beat the tar out of her or kill her.

At least you and your family are unhurt. I had my XR6T stolen while I slept when they broke in and took the keys. I have since upgraded security immensely and still take extra care to lock up and try to be "crim aware".

Should be allowed to shoot the f@#$$rs. This happened to a guy in Melb a few years ago. He shot the intruder and was prosecuted because he chose to use a .308 he had in his gun locker rather than the .22 he had.

I have security lights all over the front of the house, a big street light out front, and this in the backyard:



Generally helps deter people, and there isn't much that gets past him. Even people walking up the street will have him poking his head over the fence.

sorry to hear, its crazy how cocky they are getting. My rents had simular 3 weeks ago. They went to bed and woke the next day to find wallets, car and motor bike keys missing. Im very thankful that my parents slept throu it in a way as you never know what some coked up lowlife will do when you startle them.

In both this and my parents case end of the day car's and property can be replaced, and to be glad loved ones are stil with us

Its a scary thought that things like this happen. Im moving out with the missus soon and i wont even consider a property unless it has a lock up garage. To think that we are not allowed to defend our homes without fear of prosecution is such a silly thing...ofcourse its a fine line between what would be acceptable and what would be manslaughter, but surely when your life is at risk you should have every right to defend yourself. I was told a few years ago that the quickest way to get cops to your house is to mention firearms...in my case, since i do have pistols, i would simply say if the police cant come quickly enough i will be forced to use my pistols. Or you could suggest that the crims have firearms too...

When the cops are stalling and asking stupid bloody questions, say "Hold on a moment please", and put the phone down, then drop a heavy book a couple of times on a table beside the phone. Then pick up the phone and say "It's OK, I've shot the bastards...turn up whenever you can", and leave the phone off the hook (but with triple 000 they know who rang anyway).

That seems to bring them pretty damn fast...

Glad to hear you and the family are OK...I'd heard that it was pretty common over there to steal high performance cars for getaways, and that the buggers were getting pretty brazen about it.

Quite a shocking story, i didn't expect you to say they continued to try and break in once they were aware you were awake and resisting!

To be honest story like this scare the $#!t out of me, our house isn't the most secure when it comes to quality security doors and the like, something i plan on upgrading in upcoming renovations but for the time being i don't feel "secure".

Hope your dog is ok, for reason like this my GSD sleeps inside, if someone break into my shed i don't care, take what you want, it's covered, if someone breaks into the house he will let me know and hopefully be enough to put them off coming any further than the back/front door.

Stay safe and alert for the coming days, hope your family is ok and can move on quickly from this incident.

Oh yes I was yelling at them that the police had been called and were on the way but they didn't seem to worry them.

No it won't but I posted this as a warning to others that this kind of thing is happening and they are not immune from it happening to them.

Hopefully the syringe and other evidence will lead to a conviction but I'm not banking on it.

No they found my shovel that I had been using around the back in the garden earlier that day and picked it up were I leant it.
The piece of timber was a left over piece of roofing timber from when I had my house's roof retiled.

The dog copped a whallop for snarling and growling at them, which drove him back but he didn't get hit badly and is fine now.

I'm going to say this though: you picking up the knife was against the law. If you use a knife in this country to defend you and your family you are being charged, no if or buts. I don't agree with it, I hate it as much as anyone reading this sentence, but that is the law.

Keep sports equipment conveniently around the house or have some mounted "display pieces". Never ever say your weapon is for self defense as that is a crime in on itself. If you have to use anything to defend yourself, say you feared for your life and the life of others.

Hopefully this event has shown what kind of assistance the police will be in a home invasion situation.

Hmm makes me want to get a gun license.
I don't want to shoot criminals if I don't have to, but surely pointing a gun at them would scare away most of them, even the ones on drugs.

Once I buy my house this year I will be looking into things like CCTV and having things like baseball bats hidden around the house, because I'm a big 'sports' fan.

Well you better be good at using it because just as you see it as a way to protect yourself, it could actually be used against you too.

Having your house broken into when you are not home is devestating enough but to have it happen whilst you are there would be much worse. If I personally had someone break into my house and threaten me...I would tell them to take whatever they want. Possessions are just that...possessions and are replaceable. Humans aren't and who knows what someone who is desperate is willing to do.

I was reading somewhere just the other day (can't remember where) that it is getting more common for thieves to do home invasions to get car keys.

Seems like all these security upgrades & computer coded keys have made the cars so hard to steal, they now think its quicker and easier to bust into a house, terrorise the occupants and get the keys, and take the car with the keys than it is to break into the car and get it started and get away.

It seems odd that they would carry a used syringe throughout the whole thing though - why would you when you're trying to bust a door down? It seems to me that there is more to this than pinching a getaway car. Not suggesting the OP has any skeletons, but the level of desperation does not fit the crime.

You would have an infinitely better chance of getting the car by knocking on the door and asking for it. I know I'd happily hand over the keys and give them a quick demo on the satnav if required.

Good job on protecting the family anyway mate, it's what we're here to do and what you've done well.

And the National Firearms Agreement of 1996 that all the states signed says self defense is not a valid reason for owning or using a firearm and mandates by law firearms have to be within a gun safe when not in use and ammunition in a seperate, locked container.

If you pull out a shotgun and you're forced to use it against a jacked up needlehead (but still unarmed or with a minor melee weapon), you're going to jail.

That's because the self defense laws in this country work on escalation. If you are punched, you can't draw a knife. If you are stabbed, you can't shoot. If you are being shot at, you probably still can't shoot because you're too busy trying to get the damn gun safe open, reassemble the bolt, and insert ammunition.
