I always used to do it myself, using the Tax Pac from the post office, but since I started paying over 35k in Tax I got the pros to do it. Last year I got a 2k return. I've paid just over 38k this year so I hope I get a decent return.

For personal tax returns, etax is your best bet!!! It is highly informative and dead easy to use.
If your running a business, or do a lot of investments on a personal basis, than it may be worth your while seeing an accountant! Tax law is very intricate and the loopholes are getting harder and harder to find. btw I got $300 odd and it was put directly in my account in about 4 days after submitting through etax. and i am a qualified accountant, but have no expereince in the private sector, etc. so no-one ask for help : Polyal, $2700 is extremely optimistic!!! When I was on that kind of wage doing an internship and getting centrelink payments, my return was around the $400-600 mark.

Regarding stuff like laundry powder and stuff like that, the eTax program tells you all this....you can claim up to $150 for laundry without receipts, as long as your work requires a specific uniform...and $300 for any other misc extras, without receipts, such as phone calls for work purposes

Pilch - I am a farmer, not a uniform as such really but a hell of a lot of clothes washing!
And just reading the scots mans post its more like 150 for the laundry. I cant remember now but yes I would spend more than that a year. I don't keep the receipts for that. In my previous tax returns I had been required to provide a motorbike and small tools as part of my job. My wages reflected that but there was no where to say that I got x amouint for repairs and mainenance and a payment for depreciation of value etc. It was all built into my wage. So as far as the ATO knew I had a bike and they paid me a rebate for the interest value on my loan for it, they paid me 20% a year of its value for depreciation, the repairs came into the equation somewhere. The money I spent on small tools and wet weather gear I got money back for. Travel in my car was 60c per km. Up to 5,000km you don't need a log for but I only did 1200km anyway. The first time I used eTax i filled in as much as I could and basically it came to about 700. I got my accountant to do it and yeah the first year 2500 or there bouts.
