Most of your non car friends will never be interested in buying collectables so it doesn’t really matter what they do or don't know about brand names.

The XR6T is a fine example of an Aussie built car but there are too many of them on the street and in garages to ever be a collectable in the sense of an investment.

Now a classic is a different thing all together as just by being old can class a vehicle as classic and if you shop around you’ll find the bulk of old cars can be had for less than a new one.

When the definitive book comes out about the Falcon's story after its production ends, I hope they make note of how the EB XR6 was a tad faster than the XR8 at the time. It was a great effort by Tickford and perhaps this might be a future collectible.

When Ford release the book on Falcon's history, do you reckon they'll actually advertise it? Or just use word of mouth since no-one wants to buy big books any more?

im probably looking at this from a different angle, for me a future classic is more about what i want to enjoy & what i can afford in my budget / lifestyle..
im lucky that between me & my son we have the AU III XR6 ST, FG II GTE & now the FGX G6E Turbo sitting there & are currently looking for a xa to xc as a toy.
without meaning too, i rekcon we have collected the best in line n/a 6, & the same for the turbo & 8 and thats enough for me..
the possible future dollar value is not as important , it it was id have skipped the last 2 & sunk the coin into my original preference, a XR GT
The best thing when looking at this is to buy what you would enjoy to drive & look at in the garage.. not what may bring in the best $$$ in future..
if i had $7500, id be looking in the 60's 70's range tbh which is roughly what im doing atm

I can imagine releasing a book about the Falcon would be very low on their priority now and in the future, if at all. It'd be limited release and of no importance in their business. It'll be a big effort by some established motoring journalist probably. Hopefully one of us here will notice it and let us all know.

I will echo the point some others have made, anything stored behind the shed will be a waste of $7500, either store it in the shed in dry storage with some ventilation, find a good rust free example, of what ever you are interested in and put it into storage.

I recently picked up a fairly rust free XB GS Fairmont factory wind back, 4 wheel disks, all GT options for $1500, country car, picked up out of a shed in the bush, missing some parts, but mostly complete, so it's now in dry storage in my shed where it will remain till I can get to it. I have all parts to complete the car.

For under $7500 I would be looking at the last of the EL XR6 or XR8 with the 185kw Tickford motor in a manual.

Personally I would spend a bit more and look at EB GT, or EL GT, some around at reasonable prices, considering picking one up myself once I get my house is complete, and I have saved a few more $$, hopefully prices will remain steady till then.

FPV BF R Spec F6 6 speed manual would be a nice addition, or something a bit different and also reasonable priced these days would be a FPV Territory F6X, basically a F6 Territory, Brembo's and all, I would have one in a heart beat.

But really depends on what YOU like, if you are doing it purely for an investment, don't waste your time IMO.

could get a T1/T2 Tickford for that money, I would go an EA Ghia, EB2 Ghia 5.0, ED XR6/8, EL2 XR8, AU1 Ghia, AU1 XR8, AU2 XR8 Rebel, AU3 XR6 Sprint, AU3 XR8 (All tickfords should be Manual by the way and untouched)

Has everyone forgotten about XD-XFs or do people just not want them? It still seems possible to find tidy original cars that are EA or newer over here in NZ, but you could count on one hand the amount of nice XD/XE Fairmont Ghias or ESPs that have been for sale in the last 12 months. Thought they probably wont be a good choice for the OP if he is going to leave the car outside.

EB GT, EL GT will always be worth something and possibly the T3 TE50 with the 5.6l but again cost a lot more than $7500.

I'm still kicking myself for ruining my EL although I don't think it would have ever been worth as much as the 185 XR8.

None will ever be worth Phase 3 money but some will fluctuate with value depending of model, configuration & rarity.

As it stands I just got my HSV mang o tec and I'm considering hiding it to avoid kilometres and damage.

It's build number 0001 confirmed brochure/motor show car and Crennan's one time personal car(still to be confirmed).
Will never be worth to much but I think I may eventually make a profit on what I paid for it.

Once these cars are gone for a few years and taxis, fleets and private buyers move on and then slowly all the poor examples will be off the road, Any well maintained up spec model should be worth a little something.

No offense to those that like the AU, they're a good car but I seriously doubt they will become collectible in the future. Those built in limited runs like the TE50 may increase in value but I don't think they will ever be a good money-maker.

If you want a car that may be a future classic for under $7500, you could pick up a decent EL XR8 in manual for the money. As has been noted, the later ones with the 185kw engine would be the way to go.

I had an AU XR8 manual ute and then went back to an XH 2 XR8 manual. It was a backwards step. I then bought an EL XR8, it was worse so I went back to AU. Best thing I ever did.
I hope the 220 never becomes a classic because I want a good one for myself at a low price.

The XR6T numbers will thin out over time, especially if the salvage auctions and Gumtree wreckers are anything to go by, this will make remaining examples worth more in the fullness of time. Not to "classic car" levels though but I think more so than the VL turbo.

Thinking back to when I got my licence, could not see that old Fords, Valiant's and Holden's as collector cars in the 70's and 80's but try and buy and half decent early Holden e.g. HK-HG 4 door Kingswood now or XR- XB 4 door at a sensible price, anything is possible as a collector just depends on what people are prepared to pay and want . EA to ED's are getting fewer as most are finishing up like the early cars into scrap and a clean one could be sought down the years. The VL Calais turbo's are starting to climb up in value so will the BA on turbo Falcons that have not been molested after 30 years.

On what basis would a AU XR8 be any more or less "collectible" than a E Series?

In the following order:

ED Sprint
T1 TE50
BA1 XR6T
AU3 XR8 (220kw)
EL2 XR8 (185kw)
EB2 XR8

For that kind of money you'll have to look around, negotiate well, expect to get something that needs a bit of TLC and expect to not end up with a manual car.

I doubt you will Find a decent late model ELXR8 for $7500.00
At the end of the day, Both the EL and AU will become classics in time, as all cars 30 years and over are considered "classics". Which would be worth more in years to come?- who knows.

i had one of these a few years back, 90,000km original and i was the second owner, i sold it to my dad he gave it back to me and i sold it locally, found it dumped a few weeks later with a yellow sticker (saying unregisted car will be disposed of) anyway a truck came and picked it up by the roof and took it away...hard to believe a $500 car is now worth $8k 5 years later

There was an EA Falcon for sale in Townsville on Gumtree last year for $4k. It only had 45,000km.
Immaculate condition. Good price for a non collectable classic in new condition
