If our fuel quality improves, a direct injection can run a lot leaner and still pass emission standards

Strangely enough this car is AUSSIE built.

Before we get the band wagon saying anything about imported stuff for Holdens, just think where some Ford parts come from.

Apparently one has been made. Obviously the gains v's cost isn't there.

I know DI in an NA application is not worth the trouble....but with something like a turbo its quite good.

Yeah, they have cobbled together prototype direct injection I6's, but they will probably never see the light of day. DI would require a massive redesign of the cylinder head to accomodate it, a lot of new parts would need to be designed, which would be bloody expensive.

Its like when they had prototype twin cam motors for the EA but they went with the SOHC version because it did what they wanted and was cheaper to make.

What to make of Fords TDCi badge. Turbo diesel compression ignition.

With direct injection the fuel is highly pressurised and is then directly injected into the combustion chamber compared to that of a traditional port injection where fuel is directed into the cylinder port. So the benefit here is better economy and a much more precise control over the air/fuel mixture.

From what I also understand, the finer spray of fuel into the cylinder provides a cooling effect giving better combustion temperatures, in turn allowing for much higher compression ratio meaning more power with the possibility of a smaller engine and lower emissions.

There are more benefits as well but I can't remember. There was an article I think in Motor a year or two back when Porsche went DI in their 911 Turbo for the 997 model.

The benefits of DI are there and it opens up the possibilty of it to be used in other markets which have strict emissions laws requiring DI. Whether it is worth spending the $$ on the I6 is another thing. While it is a good engine it'd need to be applied to more vehicles to make it worth the $$ spent on it.

Holden tried it a few years back with the ecotec v6? People said wow "ecotec" not knowing what it was, then they go alloytec and now sidi direct injection to make themselves feel advanced. Who is being fooled?

not a fan of these acronymns myself, but the "spark ignition" was possibly put there to remove/distinguish the description of diesel motors which also have direct injection.

A unique version of direct injection referred to by those in the know as "Severely-Impaired-Direct-Injection" . It sounds a bit sidi to me.

Knock it all you want. Fact is it works.

Like I wrote up in a previous thread about the SIDI engine, I can get 8.0lt/100km out of it and I wasn't being gentle to it (yay for revs)

A family friend is averaging 8.9ltr/100klm combined in his Berlina SportWagon ( the 3ltr).

He is not complaining about the "SIDI" name or how it actually works, he just knows it is using 2-3ltrs less per 100k compared to his previous non "SIDI" SportWagon.

Certainly would have been on the cards when they did the BA engine right? That would have cost a fair bit in design?

Or didn't they think about it back then?

Could they use the cylinder head modules off the Duratec 35 as it is
Ecoboost friendly?
I'm thinking that some bright spark with a CGI program could take the
camshaft, spring, valve and combustion chamber module off the Duratec
and using "One Ford" use all of those existing parts in developing the head.
The D35 piston diameter is close to that of the 4.0 I-6....

Interesting part is that the Ecoboost V6 has the fuel injector on the side
of the combustion chamber, unlike most European and Japanese set ups.

In actual fact, DI engines emit higher levels of NOx than port injected engines. This is because AFRs tend to be leaner, reducing the efficiency of the TWC.

I don't even think direct injection was around then when the BA was in the planning stages. If it was it was certainly in its infancy, and a lot more expensive than it is now. I remember DI added around $1500 to the price of an engine, although that has come down a fair bit now that its a lot more common.

Its still going to be expensive no matter what.

I think they have already copied the design off another Ford engine anyway, Modular maybe. They seem similar.

You are severely misguided. I am a Holden man, but i am not bias and i know were to put credit were it is deserved. i currrently drive a VE SIDI SV6 and am considering buying an 5.0L GS later this year.

I'll think you'll find that there are only a few one eyed ****** (on both sides of the fence) that love to make a lot of noise.

From reading your above posts you appear to be one.

You're one of these one eyed nitwits that need to get your head upright, instead of it pointing down wards.

Fact is, all makes (and that's not limited to just Fords and Holdens) have their good points and their bad ones. It's just people like you that can't be bothered finding out where the good points are.

So I'd suggest you keep your smart alex comments to yourself and grow up. You're acting like a school kid with your carry on.

Mods and OP. My apologies for my abrubtness. Comments that people like this member make are pure childish and shouldn't be accepted on the forum, regardless of it beng a Ford based forum.
