I'm afraid thats not always going to work, in most cases we can spot someone who is "playing the game" and aslo i've gotten so used to people lying to me that
if i'm going to divulge a best price there is usually a credit card on the table ready for a deposit. Too often we see people trying to work us who we know are going to pop down to the next yard to shop.

Any your comment about car sales people is pretty general. like any profession we have a our fair share of idiots, however there are plenty of good ones who offer a good experiance, in the end the car saleman does work for the dealership and like any business they are there to make money, however the salesman or woman often acts as the middle man between the customer and management.

I think that that is pretty harsh considering i sell fords every day of the week, i have not had one complaint or issue that i havent worked out myself and fixed it no hassles, then again i dont pressure customers to buy every now and again just to find out whether they want it now or in three months for build times etc... then maybe ill ask if you'll buy today.

if someone wants their car evaluated then ill evaluate give them the best changeover figure i can, if they want to buy it then they will if not ive got a good chance they'll come back to me, i believe in good customer service not the amount i sell.

i usually give a follow up call to the customer if i havent heard from them in a couple of days just to find out whether they are still interested or not if not then congrats, im still dissapointed but you obviously got a cracker of a deal or perhaps he was a better salesman.

if they still are keen i'll do some more discussion then find out what they want to do.

thats all im about just look after the customer and they'll look after you.

then again you do get some real s in the business too that just constantly trying to catch you off foot and it really isnt fair, but i can understand it because most salesman as a generalisation are pricks who will do anything they can to get you to buy or tell you to bugger off.

If you were on the Sunshine Coast in Qld, I would tell you to go to Pacific Ford ..... if in Melbourne, I would tell you to stay out of the CITY ..... ;)

Yes Salesmen are in it for the dollars ..... why else would anyone get into that game .... sometimes they win .... sometimes they don't ... they all have families to feed just like the rest of us ......

You are the person with the dollars ..... that they want. So if you are not happy .... just walk away, there are lots of places selling the same cars.

Then why start 'the game'?
You expect people to be honest with you? Lol...when the general public can expect and recieve honesty from car salesmen in general, you might start getting some of that honesty returned, until then, consider another industry.

It appears to me that part of the problem here is attitude. You sound like you don't have any respect for customers before they've even walked onto your lot. And you're worried they are going to go down the road? Isn't that part of 'the game'? You'd do better if you treated potential customers as if they've just come from the dealer down the road and your job is to offer a better deal.

your right mate because if your afraid they will go down the road then you havent done your best for that customer if you look after the customer the customer will look after you (well most of the time that is anyway) i am never worries bout whether they buy or not from me because if they know ive looked after them they will come back and see me or even just a referral to another person will helps me out because i am seen as someone who gives a shite about what they want.

At the end of the day you are buying a car which ever dealer you go to you will buy the same car as it all comes down to price and the sale is FROM THE SALESMAN, you welcome the customer you give the best you can do and thats it, if its not meant to be you go else where like you did in the right frame of mind.
I used to cut my commission and found that my sales would be high, you look after the customer he will recommend you to others and the list goes on and 95% of the time they come back.
To some salesman it is a game a POWER THING that shouldn't be in sales at all.
Old saying customers always right!!!!
my two bobs worth.

Cheers

Before this gets into a 'lets bash a car salesman' thread, -NO I'm not, nor have ever been a salesman- think about selling your own car privately.

You want $5,000 for it (it's only a Jap car ) but you will probably advertise it for, say $6,000.

This way if someone comes along and gives you $6k your going to take it.
You've left a $1000 bargaining space whereby you can still get your original price and the buyer thinks they're getting a good deal.

BUT, your not going to say as soon as you meet them "Yeah, I've got $6k on it, but I'll take $5k".

This was posted here a while back, although, I can’t find the original thread. Even though it’s in the US, it still has a few interesting points about it.

Thats what my brother did when he bought his first car. Salesman wanted to pressure him into buying that day. My brother said he needed to talk to his Missus. Salesman said no worries, price will stand until Monday (it was Friday). My brother came back Monday and the salesman said he could do it for that price ONLY IF HE WAS COMPENSATED FOUR SLABS OF VB!!!

We told him to get stuffed, went to another dealer 10 minutes away and got another 1000 off the price with no stuffing around.

At least youy guys got to talk to a salesman, in 98' I went to a major counrty Victorian ford dealer to look at what was then brand new wizz bang Au XR8. I was working as a foreman then and was just wearing crappy jeans and a fluro top, I sat in the dealers yard for almost 45 minutes looking at a car and no one even aknowledged me. Other peolple came and went and were seen to, but not me. The week later I went to another major country dealer in Ballarat and walked away with keys to a brand new XR8, there service was second to none, I made sure the other dealer found out they lost a sale due to there arrogance, And from what I heard S*#% hit the fan.

Not all car salespersons are bad, and not all customers are bad, I accept that. Maybe I have read you wrong, but your comment above is exactly what irks me. Its the same as saying a customer should feel privledged that you allowed them to buy a car from you. In fact, as long as they get to buy from you, they wont care how much they pay.
So what you are saying is that when you and the wife go off to buy a washing machine neither of you are interested in the price at all. In fact, you couldnt care what the cost is.? c'mon. The whole idea of smart shopping is to start by getting at least 3 quotes or prices.
You must be extremely confident that you can give the best price around by expecting the customer to put up for the deposit before they even know the price. And once you know that the customer is silly enough to bring out the credit card before they even know the price, surely you couldnt resist giving a higher 'best price'.
Sorry mate, but if people bought cars like that, its little wonder there are so many Consumer Affairs claims against car salesman for people who have not understood what they have bought.

with respect

I reckon the best/most efficient dealer my family has dealt with was a Honda dealer. We told them we wanted tinted windows, floor mats and a tow bar. He wrote down a good price and said it will be valid for a week and said we were free to shop around hunting for a better price. We didn't even go through that whole "I can't do it for this price... you're breaking my balls... the manager will hang me" rubbish.

We couldn't get a better price.

It's amazing the different approaches taken by different manafactures. When i bought my last car (Territory Ghia) i also verry seriously considered a Subaru Outback and a Dogde Nitro. Both the Subaru and Dodge dealers sent me off for a unacompanied test drive then gave me a price and it was pretty much this is the price if you want it take it or leave it. Ford on the other hand took me for a short drive with the salesman and appeared more than willing to fight amoungst them selves for the last 5 cents. No wonder the resale is down the drain.

i did get the best price once. i am not shitting you, i got the salesman to bring the car to my house(as they will these days) get them on your turf. then i simply asked how much com he was making. his reply 50 bucks( yeah right) so i bribed him fivehundred. he made severel calls to his boss. in my presence, over an hour( like i was a tuff custemer. lol first time to get the inside news. he told me straight away what he thought would be rock bottom, and he was a grand off. it was still 4 grand cheaper than what i was prepared to pay to make the deal for the car. so 3 abd half grand saving in a way,lol I WISH I COULD SAY THERE WAS BEER INVOLVED, BUT NUP.

Mr El has the right idea, and that is the same approach i use.
At the end of the day YOU are buying the car, if your not happy with them, go elsewhere.
I had the same experience the other day.

Im afraid its not the salesmen who are tossers, its people with attitude like yours.

Frankly your attitude stinks, you obviously havent bought a new car in many many years because if you had then you would definately know your way is not the right way.

Being in carsales is a job, we work very long hours for the money we get. This commission everyone keeps speaking about, You make out as though we make hundreds from selling you a car. Often in new carsales the reward is not all that great.

If you would like to buy a car, make the choice of which car it is... walk into your local dealer, treat the salesman like a human being and not a vending machine. I can assure you that if you do this, you will be treated exactly how you want to be treated.

You all winge//complain that dealers play games, well when you start playing games like ''yep we will buy today if the price is right'' but know all along that you have no intention of doing so and simply want to extract the 'best price'. Now think about the *** reaming that salesman will get from his manager when you walk out after you gave him commitment to buying the car. You have just left with their price and that dealership has about 5% chance of ever seeing you again.

Even if they have really really looked after you, the next dealership you walk into will always undercut any price, even if its by $50.

You play the dishonest game with us, we will play the 'no price untill you are ready to buy' game.

Sorry to say it but people like you make it hard for normal people to buy cars. You also give customers the name used in the motor trade 'buyers are liars'

Wake upto yourself

But the thing is we would have bought if the price was right. But he didn't make an offer for us to consider. We will not impulse buy. Mum prefers to wait a week and go to Sunshine ford and get a better deal.

If you all paid the retail price none of you's would be complaining.
So when you are shopping for price and go from one place to another what ever price you get someone will always beat it, even if by $50.

Be decent and we'll treat you the same.

Salesperson job can be very hard, esp the way some of the kickers treat you! You all think we're hear to rip you off. The fact being, i have no idea how much the cars cost and the sales person normally has no authority to discount a car. And weather we sell the car for $50 profit or $5000 profit i still get paid the same comission and crappy base wage. So before dissing the salesperson who has no control on how much the car is sold for maybe you should speak to the manager!

Most of the people I work with a decent normal everyday people and some of you's should treat them with abit of respect that you would show others.

BTW how many packs of corn flakes do you buy each year...it all ads up!

End of rant. soiya

Sounds good but doesn't work like that.
Salesmen dont get the last say on price so they wont commit to anything unless you do too. if i was a salesman i would tell you a price i thought would get you on the hook, then i would say something like "if your willing to do a deal at this price we'll write it up subject to the sales managers approval" at which time you are bound by the contract to honour it.
If my price suited your budget you would be happy to sign, if not and i'm not prepared to move then you might aswell go elsewhere.
The last thing you will get is a figure on paper that you can take down the road to barter with.

Do people really think salesmen care if they go to the next dealer thinking they'll be any better off. I wouldn't as i'm sure the other yard will burn customers who will think the same as you and come to me, it's swings and roundabouts people, get over it.

And if someone came to me for a deal, went to another yard for a better price and returned it to me for warranty, i'd fill your door inners with a few sardines.....mmm smells great on a hot day!

If I could just add...

Think of this from the sales persons perspective. They are still a person doing what they need to do in their line of work. You want us to respect you... well how about you consider us?

Picture this scenario:
You're a bloke in a nightclub, you're single and you'd like not to go home alone this evening. So in that fact you need to pick up a girl to frolick with (or whatever it is you might do, lol.) Experience tells me that if I approach a girl and talk to her and perhaps find some common ground will work well in my endeavours to score for the night.

Experience tells me that walking right up to her and saying "Wanna come back to my place for a shag?" wont work (Though, there are times where it will, stupid girls.)

So how do you think I would feel, as a salesperson (yes, I am.) when you approach me and say "Hi, just wanting your best price on such and such a model." I'm more likely to reach a competitive price with you if we've had the chance to relate, exchange names and I've shown you the car and even taken you for a drive first.

If your approach remains to be "I just want your best price", don't be surprised if I do respond with "The best price is for today only." And If I do follow that path, don't expect me to give you that in writing because I'm sure not going to let you go and shop it further. Or don't be surprised if I give you the RRP and send you on your way.

Let's make friends, then we'll do a good deal. I'm not a counter-service 15 year old employee sitting at a desk waiting to take your order.

Wasnt a certain FORD dealer in Shepp?
My Dad was outside looking at a Fairmont Ghia, so me and a mate went into the showroom to look at a GT, The sales man says as soon as we go in, "look kids, this is no place to play around you will have to go back outside" We were both 20!!
So that salesman goes out to 'make a sale' to the old man.
And he says to the salesman, "Geez you are a great salesman, not only can you talk people into buying, but you can also talk them out of it"
Total, arrogant knob.

Phew, that feels better

No offence mate, not that I would say such a thing but if I was working in a Ford dealer and spotted a pair of 20yo's looking at a brand new GT I wouldn't have the most positive thoughts either..

Wake upto yourself
lol!!

Ive purchased plenty of cars for myself, my business and my customers (part of my business is car finance / leasing) and I must say from my point of view as a businessman dealers treat me alot sharper then they treat the general public that walk in, as they know I know what I want and what im going to pay for it.

Ive learnt that the easiest way to deal with these people is to tell them your honest intentions upfront, and let them decide whether or not they wish to deal with you, I have found the best way to do this is tell them your researching a number of vehicles, would like a test drive and a quote. If this is too hard for them (which alot of them it seems to be) walk away and find another dealer.

Its hard to label them all as scum bags, as a number of them are decent, but even in saying that 95% of them have their bag full of tricks and will use it, regardless of how decent they are its all numbers to them and their associated counter parts (eg. aftermarket tint / paint protection ladies).

A tip to you guys that are in the business, if you actually pulled your fingers out of your *** and knew your product, offered brillant service then 70% of the deals you QUOTE will come back and give you a second chance, bullying people into spending 20 - 50 kay without thinking about it is unethical and stupid!

As per usual on this site my comments have been taken wrong. I am aware that salespeople have a job to do and are just doing it. Also it is obvious that no matter what you have got included in the deal or price discount you are going to get something to get you over the line when you have the pen in your hand even if it is a set of headlight protectors.
If a salesperson treats me with respect and does not go into high pressure mode they will get my respect. I have paid more at a dealer before for a car because the salesperson gave me space and didnt hassle me unlike the other dealer who just wanted my business at any cost and undercut the other dealer $500 straight up.
But if you be a high pressure and start to play the game I will play right back. A couple of people here reckon they can pick tossers like me as was stated. Well believe me some of us dumb buyers can pick sales people like yourself and will act right back at you.
The simple message is a person who comes in to deal with you obviously wants a car. Treat them like a human being instead of another tick next to your name on the sales board and you might just be surprised at how much more business you get from word of mouth ect.
Nice idea blackout , lets make friends before we do the deal. Does that mean once I have bought from you and "its another one in the traffic" that you are going to call me the week later for a BBQ and a couple of beers at your house like friends do?

haha, exactly right.

Same thing happened to me when looking for a GTP or F6.
Totally ignored at 2 different dealerships till i entered the showroom and said i am here to buy a new F6 can you help. That made their eyes light up, as i don't really look like the typical FPV purchaser!
