Speed Cameras make more and more money each year right?
But teh road toll usulally Drops or hangs level....... SO more people are speeding, but less or the same amount are being killed.

So speeding is not the main factor in crashes.... and defiantly not less then 20 over the limit.

Even if the number of speeding tickets issued nationally dropped to zero tomorrow, we wouldn't lose the revenue raisers cameras. There are 5 simple words that the Gestapo Government can say every time some knob gets the pedals confused that make it all ok.

"Speed was a contributing factor."

Of course speed was a contributing factor. If the car/s weren't moving, there wouldn't have been an accident. They may as well say that the angle of the front wheels was a contributing factor, or that most accidents are caused by a vehicle failing to stop in time.

It means nothing, but the media, the genetically "simple" and the "Just don't speed" brigade will continue to buy it.

I had a friend build a focused microwave emitter he used for just such a thing. Apparently it wasn't very healthy for those in the vicinity, including himself, so he binned it.

The sites have to be set up and surveyed. the vehicles are manned too, you would have given the operator a fright.

How about using the bits out of a CRT tv, ive seen heaps of the CRT tv's on cleanup week all out on the kerb with the backs smashed in and the device in the back of the glass section of the tele' taken.

Id just stick to the breaking down infront of the camera. When he moves call a friend to go and "break down" infront of the cam, then when he moves again, restart your car then move infront. Have a camcorder on your dash on record so if the cam handler gets angry enough to have a go at you, you have proof you didnt start it.

Jamming radar is easy, just buy a radar jammer. Dozens of places on the net to do it.

Of course when you are caught with it (and you WILL be caught) you will be in world of hurt.

They are VERY easy to track........

Remember you are interfering with government revenue and they take that VERY seriously.

You are aware that Highway Patrol coppers are renowned for their senses of humour about this sort of stuff.

They will probably invite you to stay overnight to keep them amused and will be so impressed by your car that they will keep it for a while too.

Just got me thinking about my favorite urban myth/ledgend, the one with the guy who sneaks up behind the camera car, steals the numberplate and fits it to his car, and then speeds past the camera 10 - 20 times.

That part is doable. Get a magnetron from a microwave oven, a waveguide to aim the microwave beam and point at the camera.
Problem is that reflected microwaves are not "human friendly" and would probably do more damage to yourself. At the very least you will no longer have to buy condoms ;-).

How do they work and how do they find out you have one? Not being able to get a speed reading if they use the speed gun on your car?

Radar detectors leak sound at a certain frequency (i think), so a radar detector-detector (fitted to all cop cars) listens for that sound. There are detectors out there that claim to not leak as they shut down upon hearing the detector-detector sound, so also claim they can never be detected with technology now and in the future, but i guess you wont really know until you pass a revenue raiser. Although your screwed if they are your laser. Whole new ball game. That and the fact they will generally pull you over if they cant get a reading.

Radar based speed detection systems use a wave property called "the doppler effect"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect

In short a high frequency radio signal is transmitted from the "radar" and a receiver listens for the reflected signal. The two are compared and difference is relative to the difference in speed of the radar (which can be stationary or moving) and the target.

To defeat this technology you have to do one of 2 things:

1) Do not reflect the signal.

This is difficult as you are in a big shiny metal thing with a nice flat number plate on the front and headlights pointing forward.

2) Overload the receiver.

This requires that you either know the frequency of the transmitter or just send out huge amounts of EMR on all frequencies. The former is difficult and if you were to listen for the radar and then match it, it is already too late. The latter will allow your family to use the saved speeding fines to help pay for your oncologist and later funeral.
This also can actually give a false positive and even if you are not speeding try and convince a HP copper that the 190km/h in a 60 school zone is due to his radar misoperating.

Radar detectors receive the signal from the radar and warn you that it is being used. This works well in situations where there are multiple vehicles or fixed permanent radar such as speed cameras but it you are the only car on the road and the radar is mobile and switched on only after you are in range then all you will be told is that you have already been detected and are about the get a ticket.

Radar detector detectors such as the Stalcar Spectre used by many Highway Patrol units listen for any emissions from the electronics of your radar detector and let the police know. Although they are prone to many false readings coppers are very good at telling if you are lying during the interrogation on the side of the road after they intercept you. Not a lot of fun.

Some of the new technology radar detectors cannot be detected by RDDs but they have a couple of other tricks they use.
The most common is to just randomly turn on the radar while in a line of cars and look for brake lights or sudden drops in speed despite being under the limit.

To give you an idea of just how seriously radar detectors are taken by some of our governments.

If five cars were intercepted:
Car 1) Driver has a BAC of 0.10
Car 2) Driver is unlicensed and the car unregistered.
Car 3) Traveling at 30km/h over the limit
Car 4) Car has totally bald tyres and no headlights blinkers or brake lights
Car 5) Car is brand new bought yesterday, registered with a driver with a perfect driving record but a radar detector that does not work in a locked box in the boot.

The driver of car 5 will receive the highest penalty.

This is not the case in all states (WA obviously) but is true in most.

There is no greater crime in Australia than to interfere with government revenue in any way.

The Camera's B2TF is referring to are operated by a private contractor (read McQuarie Bank owned) who are on a bonus scheme as pointed out by a Syd newspaper recently.

The latter bit I'd believe, many of ye fabian types in AUS. Also at the WP forum.

The cameras are bulldung, used by your AG or Auditors office to 'predict' revenue income yearly for budgetary purposes.

A 'small' fixed camera system is fine, but expand that (and in NSW we're going for big numbers) and it becomes revenue raising.

The speed limits on many a highway and many an inter city freeway length are pointless, I'd rather see them gone once again, after median barrier install.

Do that, and on-road behaviour will improve drastically too.
